Vintage Gay Record Covers

November 12, 2008

I was over at my new favorite blog, The Peculiar One, and he pointed me to this online archive of vintage album covers at Bizarre Records. The treasure pictured above came from “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” the name of the gayest gallery, but be sure: they are all pretty damn gay. “Nordic Adventure” and “Stretching Credibility” are pretty cool too.

Long time TPR fans know how dear and not-near-enough Morrissey is to our pink hearts. VulgarPicture.com is a really comprehensive site showing us all Smiths and Moz album art–like perusing my record collection but with more pixels. Broken down by year, it has high quality images of ALL OF IT – cover art, sleeve art, Japan promo CD art, DVD sleeves, colored 7 inches, limited 12 inches, and anything you ever needed for your gay-ass wall paper, going back to the first 7″ (pictured below, I have one). GO!

Why Are We Obsessed With Vintage Paperback Cover Art?

October 7, 2008

I guess it’s because of the hysterical extremism of the depicted gender roles? How about the salacious titles? Maybe the nudity, too? I dunno, but we have some nice galleries to choose from when it comes to this type of visual throwback. Vintage Paperbacks is a good place to start, breaking up the covers by genre, including “Film Noir Paperbacks,” “Hillbilly,” “Juvenile Delinquency,” and “Lesbiana Paperbacks.” Gay on the Range curates all the male gay ones into one place in case you are so one track. Any how, they are good viewing for a lazy Sunday!

Vintage is Futuristic

The sass masters over at tinyflowers.com have posted a few images of recently auctioned vintage condom tins. It’s interesting to see how these little rain coats made for “storms” to come were marketed before AIDS. Just from the packaging, you can tell the emphasis was on discretion–mostly the 3 to a tins were designed without any mention of what was inside. I’m sure out favorite queer electro-queen would love the one below. Check out the surprising auction prices and be safe, homos!!
