Horse Meat Disco

September 30, 2010

Photobucket

Born in London, Horse Meat Disco is four DJ’s who curate vintage New York disco, real Italo, and new rarities to form a different kind of dance party. They’ve successfully grown their schtick to residencies at The Eagle, London, Lux in Lisbon, Tape in Berlin and Cihan in Istanbul. Currently, they are promoting a new mix, “Horse Meat Disco Volume 2″ out now on Strut/k7! Records. On Thursday, October 7th, Horse Meat Disco lays it long for Stardust’s 2nd Anniversary at Berlin Nightclub. This will be their Chicago debut, and they’ll be joined by Clique Talk (Live), Chrissy Murderbot and Kid Color. I was able to get them to answer some questions about their scope, their party and their style (FYI, they love American breakfast). Read the Q & A and check out a download link and teaser mix below!

The name “horse meat disco” is really “out,” maybe even confrontational. What kind of limitations or opportunities has this presented?

The name came from a newspaper headline that read “horse meat discovered in british salami.” James noticed it had been partially obscured so the name was a mistake really – it just sounded slightly sleazy. People love the name and really want to know where it came from but it hasn’t presented any limitations, in fact quite the contrary.

How long have you been doing this? What has changed?

Seven years, the scene has got bigger that’s the major change–that people’s eyes and ears are more open to the sound out in clubland.

Who is your audience? How is it different from other gay communities? Are you concerned with creating a community?

Our audience has always been a pretty mixed affair. We started the club seven years ago because we were tired of the same old gay clubs in London where women and straight people weren’t made to feel at home. We cut our teeth in mostly straight clubs and we wanted a queer space where all our friemds were welcome – gay, straight or otherwise.

What about trends? There’s new-disco, fashion, ebbs and flows of house music. Since all the “real” disco was made back in the day, how does Horse Meat Disco relate to current and passing trends in order to keep the party relevant?

We have always tried to keep a hand in what’s playing out there at the minute. A couple of us play newer records as well as real disco  really tend to dig deep into the vaults. Having said that, I think part of our success is the shared knowledge we all have and the sense of diversity that we all tend to introduce to our sets.

What’s exciting to you about touring the states? What’s exciting about chicago?

The musical heritage in America feels greater in terms of soul, funk, disco and dance music so people are really open to what we do. We love the breakfasts, the record shopping and the scale of the USA. Chicago is the home of HOUSE! I’ve only been there once a long time ago and can’t wait to play there

Lady Bunny: TPR Hates Her

June 19, 2009

Photobucket

In the last 6 years, Chicago’s queer scene has evolved into an enviable beast. FKA, the Chances crew, Stardust, GenderJUST, the Windy City Times and all of you independent thinkers that sometimes come together to just fucking express yourselves have created a truly mobile, hip and accepting culture. So when some NYC drag queen rides into the Chi on fast-unfastening cred, calls us a 2nd tier city and proceeds to BEG to go back to a time when it was okay to hate vaginas, the irony is more disappointing than offensive.

Fish Out of Water, a Chicago-based film seeking to further the current civil rights movement by addressing the bible and homosexuality, is the complete antithesis to Lady Bunny’s ignorance extravaganza. I’m not privy to the details that led to the fund raiser last night at Berlin, but Stardust and FOOW could not have been prepared. For sure, I love the work that Stardust does and Berlin Nightclub is my safe-bet good time, but by the time Lady Bunny was mid-through her show, all the women in the audience had left and I was ashamed to still be there. The work that we have put in to achieve a community that talks to itself, loves one another and educates the ignorant was willfully farted upon by a HAS BEEN, and you bet your ass I was booing and screaming until we cut that tired queen off the stage. Some were mumbling about elders, and the work that ol’ girl did with Wigstock, but you know what? THIS IS NOT THEN AND HAVE MOVED WAY PAST BEING STUPID, IGNORANT FAGGOTS. I don’t care if you are wearing a dress or wearing out your thrift store sneaks, if you identify as queer and make retard jokes or are willfully under-educated about gender theory, you are NOT fierce or funny and not deserving the respect and adoration of our up and coming baby-gays. We are currently [ ] this close to getting equality on the books for Gays and Lesbians, but not week goes by where I see people stare at and whisper about the tranny on the train. Infinitely more frustrating than correcting straights with their pronouns is telling a gay man that his male privilege is REAL.

Lady Bunny, take your nasty back to NYC, a place that’s anonymous enough and with sufficient cash to put up with your stank ass. Chicago doesn’t want you! Our community is learning to love each other and we don’t need you fucking it up with dated BULLSHIT. I’m glad we USED your name to raise some $$ for FOOW, but sorry to say that we gave you a platform.

Ssion at Berlin This Thursday

June 2, 2009

Photobucket

It’s been a long time since Ssion‘s latest full length, Fool’s Gold came out, but you wouldn’t know it from their set last week opening for Fischerspooner. A stage reminiscent of their recent music videos, Cody Critcheloe full of charisma and working that dirty-ass fu man chu, band as hot as their own leather collars, not to mention the powerful Woman. I mean, the story behind the music really should have VH1 knocking on their door, too complicated for this post. But when it all boils down to an indie-queer scene that is looking for a band that speaks to them, knows the history, keeps the funk (read: B.O.) and has the songs to back it up, there is no one doing it better than Ssion right now. No one. This Thursday at Berlin is where it’s at, another win for Stardust.

Kingdom In Chicago, FINALLY! Free Tickets Here!

May 11, 2009

SO happy that this week will be packed with banjee-bass, dubstep, hip hop, R & B, Freestyle and house, all courtesy of NYC homothug, cutie and TPR pal Kingdom. A prolific DJ and producer to say the least, he’s been having successful residencies all over his home town and three consecutively hot mixtapes (that I can think of), Chicago is in for a treat. First, he’s got a slot this Thursday at Berlin’s Stardust, then he’s headlining over at Bouncement, a fresh group of energetic party starters that have been taking Chicago’s late night scene to sHtreets. $7 cover at Lava Lounge, but you and a friend can get in for free by email me at thinkpinkradio((@))gmail.com and telling me why you love homothugs. It’s that easy!

DJ Kim Ann Foxman- Next Thursday!

April 10, 2009

Photobucket

To be honest, I have never heard Kim Ann Foxman of Hercules & Love Affair spin records, so I can’t vouch for her deck skills. BUT WHO CARES?! The best part about queer indie celebs from bands coming out for a DJ set is the crowd, this is sure to be a sexy mix. Stardust has quickly made a name for itself, being the newest weekly night at the always intense Berlin, and having this petite butch come out for a night is only furthering its reputation. Can’t wait!
