Riceboy Sleeps

March 4, 2009

Photobucket

I don’t do much Sigúr Ros reporting around here. I must admit that I lost interest after the first record because frankly, a lot of it sounds like Yanni for the cool kids. But there is a time and place for these kinds of sonic sound-scapes, I’ve seen some cool modern dance pieces soundtracked by Sigúr Ros, and they are a good thing to pop in when your parents come over. I was very happy to get a heads up from the effervescent Larry Bob, of Holy Tit Clamps, that the singer for Sigúr Ros and his BF are collaborating on a project called Riceboy Sleeps. They put out a gorgeous book (now out of print) of drawing and poems and have a few songs up on ye olde myspace. Familiar stuff, always with the dreaminess, but maybe the romantic nature of the partnership adds a little tension, some sex-cloud that I appreciate.

Tara Jane O’Neil

February 26, 2009

Photobucket

It’s easy to forget about Tara Jane O’Neil. Not knocking her or anything, but the influential bands that she was in (Retsin, Rodan) are still themselves fighting for recognition, and her solo records are the sonic opposite. While Rodan and Retsin were jagged and aggressive, TJO records tend to be atmospheric, with layers of textured folk and hushed electronics. Her albums always get the critics talking, but she has never been the lady of the moment, and here I am not forgetting her. Her music is rewarding for its quiet confidence and on stage, TJO takes over–her moods dominate the crowd and linger long after her set. A Ways Away, her 5th solo record is due on May 5th on K Records, check out an mp3 from it, “Drowning,” below.

Nomi Sings for Deep Red

January 26, 2009

Photobucket

Seeing Hercules & Love Affair this past summer was quite an experience. A party band to the core, the queer energy bounced off that stage like healthy balls. Who knows what is in store for H & LA? Only the greek gods know, but it’s not surprising that we now have a side project from Hercules singer Nomi and some of the other band members. No, Andy Butler or Antony are not anywhere near this, but familiar it is (and that’s a good thing). Deep Red has two songs up on their myspace and have been playing some NYC shows. I’m hoping they can un-smooth the sound a little, but with one of their concerts featuring only Sade covers, that might not be in the tranny cards.

justinbond.com

December 21, 2008

If you were lucky enough to catch Kiki & Herb live, then pat yourself on the back cuz it doesn’t look like those crazy old ladies will be back any time soon. Justin Bond has been very busy as himself, with many solo and group shows in NYC and beyond. He is certainly an active facebook friend and now has a blog and a website, justinbond.com. The site is kept updated with a news section, has a merch shop and also promises a new solo album from Justin. Go to the music section and hear a live recording of the new song “The New Depression.” Check out his blog at Justin Bond Is Living and read his intelligent rant on gay marriage.

Junior Senior Broke Up

September 28, 2008

Not too surprising, since both of them are doing the solo thing right now. Still waiting on Jeppe’s follow up to his superb 1st song, but the myspace made it official. The above video is a never released 10 min clip Jeppe did from the vault when we recorded ‘Hey Hey My My Yo Yo’ Good times. Read the full R.I.P. statement after the jump. Keep with Jesper Jr. at myspace.com/iscreamicecreamrocks and Jeppe Sr. at myspace.com/jeppe

Jeppe: Tall Guy From Junior Senior’s Gone Solo

April 14, 2008

Photobucket

It was always funny to read about how Junior Senior is half gay. Like a half brother or someone who’s half latino. In any case, the daddy looking guy/ the gay half Jeppe is starting his own music project, and it’s just one myspace song, a new personal blog and a you tube channel’s worth of work that is available for our pleasure. The song, a cover of “Johnny Come Home” by Fine Young Cannibals shows us just who was responsible for Junior Senior’s glam/chant gloss. Jeppe is hinting at special guests to come for this solo endeavor, I hope he gets some Beth Ditto action. Check out his myspace and friend him.
