CSS Remixes Lykke Li

September 10, 2008

Photobucket

So, the spoken word sections on two tracks from Lykke Li‘s “Youth Novels” aren’t so listenable, and the song “Complaint Department” also reminds us how young this girl is. But after that, you’ve got 11 left overs that can stand up to releases from her older counterparts in the hype machine. And seriously, the girl goes from bohemian on the street to white-hot pop star in two shakes – if she doesn’t deserve super stardom, I don’t know who does. A bunch of remixes have been making the rounds, CSS takes a competent stab at “Little Bit.”

Ssion Covers Young Marble Giants

August 24, 2008

Lot’s of people raving about this new video by Ssion. Cody Critcheloe’s writing and directing has really taken sharp turns, making unexpected but senseful decisions. I know when TPR interviewed them earlier this year, Cody seemed very comfortable among his extra-bohemian bandmates, speaking eloquently about his current incarnation and his vision for the band. Make no mistake, Ssion is his baby, and it’s growing up to be quite the queer heavyweight. ANYWAY, the big news for me was not the above music video, but his new cover of Young Marble Giants by-way-of Hole’s “Credit in The Straight World.” Be on the look out for the new Street Jizz 12″ out on September 1st (on Chicago’s very own Sleazetone) with remixes by Norrit, Nick Zinner (of Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Hawnay Troof.

In case you haven’t noticed, anything Kingdom touches turns to bold ass gold. With his Mixtape Volume 2 having been out now for a little while, it’s clear he’s here to stay. Check my fave track from that mixtape, go and buy it, and pick up his latest remix, Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop” below. If you purchase the mixtape, you can get a high quality, 320 kbps of the Lil Wayne Remix as a bonus track.

B-52′s Funplex Remixes Finally Out

March 28, 2008
Photobucket

Finally! And judging from the amount of people searching for Peaches’ “Pleasure Seekers Remix,” CSS’s “Extended Remix” and the Scissor Sisters’ “Witches at the Wet Seal Mix,” there are people dying for these hip, extra queer treatments of an already gay song. SO far, I think the Peaches take is the best as she really makes it her own. To tell you the truth, CSS yawns through this one and the blown out Ibiza/white party vibe on the Sisters’ turn is a bit much. Think you can get these puppies here for free? No Way. Blogs that have dared have already gotten the smack down, not even a day later. The entire Funplex EP is only $2.50 on itunes, buy some music for a change.

“Lesbian Wannabe”…

February 21, 2008
Photobucket

…isn’t a new song by Doktor Kosmos. They aren’t a new band either, a Swedish import that is admittedly very quirky. This remix by Radio LXMBRG is pretty catchy, though. Stream some others at their myspace or at last.fm and check out Radio LXMBRG while you’re at it, because you have to fight to keep up on all the good stuff coming out of Sweden these days.

Ssion To pOwn 2008

January 9, 2008
Photobucket

Yesterday was a huge day for Ssion, the almost-plushie band who has put out consistently good records since 1999, either self released or on a label here or there. 2007′s Fool’s Gold was no exception and is set to be re-released on Sleaztone Records on February 12th. Glass Candy touched the stove with a new remix that Pitchfork highlighted yesterday, so to be sure, Ssion will own 2008. Big Stereo and Discobelle dutifully followed with their own posts, I’m doing the same. As of this second, you can’t get Fool’s Gold at their website anymore, so while we wait, here are some mp3′s old and current. I’ve already blogged about this record, but a small band like Ssion can’t get enough.

Peaches Still Ripe

It’s been a while, her DJ sets are just trashy enough to keep me sated but I miss Peaches. She just makes me laugh. Artists whose strength is their hook-up ready singles are nothing new, so you haters can just halt right there. “Downtown,” “Boys Wanna Be Her,” and “Stick It To The Pimp” from Impeach My Bush were all bangers, remixed and danced-to across the world. Plus, she’s a prominently political rocker that’s never afraid to put her money on what she shoves her mouth over. To my delight, there is some momentum building at camp rump- I got an email just to let me the know the XXXtress will be touring as a DJ next spring, there’s a sale for merch at peachesrocks.com, we can expect a new LP in fall ’08 AND she just remixed Tone Loc’s Wild Thing. Good enough. A trip, skip and lick on my keyboard and I also found a hysterical collaboration with underground queer icons Scream Club. “Fine as Fuck,” a song where the ridiculous hook is only out shined by Cindy Wonderful’s deft pillow talk.

After the sturm und drang of the corporate media machine, Portland’s Gossip are quietly posting new music on their myspace. Singer Beth Ditto has been giving me the chills- the boldest cover girl, video diva and mouthy front woman has lead her band to indie stardom. I would have never thought a pro-fat, tranny chasing punk could get so much mainstream attention. Props. Lucky us, as we wait for a new record there have been countless remixes and never ending tours. Run over and have a listen at their new songs 8th Wonder, Spare Me From the Mold and Heavy Kross, and don’t be afraid to give them some feedback. They are still small enough to get your note, and their recent success might require some humbling. Also, here are some remixes and mashups you might have heard already…

A Plus D–Gossip vs. Elastica

Eve Massacre–Gossip vs. Loverboy

Kitsune Maison–Gossip vs. Dangerous Dan vs. Nicky Van She (Gossip Around the World)

Gossip–Yr Mangled Heart (Linus Loves Remix)

Gossip–Jealous Girls (Tommie Sunshine Remix)

Gossip–Jealous Girls (NYPC Remix)

Buy Gossip’s music from their label Kill Rock Stars, itunes, or Back Yard
