Alt Q’s 10th Anniversary – Best of Edition

May 7, 2010

Photobucket

NEVER forget. In 2003, when Think Pink was a fresh-faced radio show with two lil DJ’s that could, the first person to give us any official nod or kudo was Scott Free. Not only did it feel nice, but since I already knew the work that he did with (what was then) Queer is Folk and the weekly queer showcase Homolatte, it was like validation. To this day, running into Scott always brings a reassurance that Chicago is a hot-bed of activism and artistic support, and his giantess frame is balanced by his snuggle-bear demeanor. Alt Q has jump started so many queer musicians including Actor Slash Model, Chris Garneau, and Coyote Grace; it’s also featured established out-performers such as Phranc and Grant Hart. This 10th anniversary show is a testament to Chicago’s desire for its own queer Lollapalooza and one of the many examples of Scott Free’s love of the Windy City. Hats off, Scott!!

From the press release:

ALT Q (formerly Queer Is Folk Festival) is celebrating it’s 10th year as a showcase for GLBT musicians and performers at the Old Town School of Folk Music. This year’s festival features some of our favorite performers from over the past 10 years. ALT Q is a celebration of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered experience through music and performance. Featuring an evening of five performing acts, the event’s mission is to raise awareness of out performers among the general public and the LGBT community. A meet-the-artists reception will follow the event. This year, proceeds from the event will be donated to given to the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission for relief efforts in Haiti. Funds go directly to two organizations –SEROvie, which provides HIV services and counseling, and Colectiva Mujer y Salud, a lesbian Dominican group that has crossed the border to Haiti to assist in the relief efforts. http://www.iglhrc.org

John Alexander of Salem’s Flickr Page

Salem continues to enrapture the underground. This is one of those times when I can’t help but think that hipsters rally around a band or sound simply because they know that it will never make it mainstream, and therefore never lose its cred. Don’t think I am hating, there is a compelling inspiration behind making “goth-electro-juke.” And after that crazy music video and intense interview in Butt Magazine with singer John Holland, it is no wonder this trio (yes they are a trio and the 3rd is a lady and no one has ever bothered to ask her anything, WTF) of artists are making a splash. I was even further intrigued when I found John’s flickr page.

Peaches Touring with Drums of Death

March 10, 2009

Photobucket

I don’t know about y’all, but these days when I hear about a new Peaches album, I get a little scared. Don’t get me wrong, the lady has done a lot for sex. As in, she has single handedly allowed hipsters to talk about it, and be a little sore when they walk the walk about it. I was able to interview her during the Fatherfucker tour, and let me tell you: she has strong vision and nothing but love for anyone with a freeness about sexuality. HOWEVER Impeach My Bush, her last record, mostly collapsed under her own weight, and I was beginning to doubt. The sounds started dating themselves, and I was worried it would be the end.  But I wouldn’t want an indie scene without her! THANK GOD she started remixing, because her remixes have been stellar. This week, it was with great relief that I read she was letting some new blood into her labia-fold, and here come Drums Of Death. Tourmates and album contributors for Peaches circa 2009, it is always good news when a veteran gets a youngsta she inspired to help out. It’s like the sexual circle if life. Drums Of Death is from the UK and released a Peaches inspired mixtape that embeds the new song “I Feel Cream,” the title track of the record (hint: some hot shit starts right around the middle and continues right at the end).

Download below, tour dates and album track list after the jump. I Feel Cream is out May 5th on XL Recordings.

Gentleman Reg Got On RCRD LBL

January 29, 2009

Doesn’t seem like too long ago that Reg Vermue was touring as a hired hand with the Hidden Cameras. Then all of sudden the Torontonian moved to New York, had a bit part in Short Bus, and now his band Gentleman Reg has a few songs featured at RCRD LBL. Deserved, of course, as Gentleman Reg’s songs have always had more going on than your average indie-pop. Check out his latest over at the myspace and get some download action at RCRD LBL.

Big In Japan: Queer Music Experience

* Takaki Fujishima

There I was, surfing my little heart out when I came across a Japanese equivalent to Think Pink Radio: Queer Music Experience. A guy named Takaki Fujishima has been involved in his local queer indie scene and started a web site/blog with posts about music for the benefit of his community. I tried my best write a short and cheerful email to Takaki introducing him to Think Pink Radio and hoping we could maybe e-connect and work together. A little while later, I got an equally cheerful response, and this week Takaki was nice enough to write a post on his site. Google’s translator is actually pretty terrible, but one seemingly possible quote from QME is:

Think Pink Radio, the blog on the premise that the Japanese have read is not on the course all written in English. But, audio files and links to YouTube video tape with plenty of it, try clicking on them alone, and I think there’s quite a bit of fun, I think.

Indeed, it’s tough to try and get through a website in Japanese, but his “LGBT Music TOP 100″ post is just that, his best picks running the spectrum from Elton John to the Gossip and almost every one has a youtube video. He re-posted the Rhythm King & Her Friends video and had this to say:

I have the clip was funny VIDEO the eyelash with a mustache and a nose under the opinion that I sing just stuck.

It’s a love-it-gruel.

I’ve always felt that Think Pink Radio is unique and lucky to be able to do what we do in Chicago. It must be even more rare and with more luck that Takaki can run Queer Music Experience in Japan. I’m so happy to have found an e-mate!!

Hercules and Love Affair

December 7, 2007

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Brooklyn’s Hercules and Love Affair are a fine example of experimental disco, not unlike stuff you’d find on a good Soul Jazz complilation. With a limited 12″ on DFA records and an upcoming full length with guest vocals by Antony, muscular love affairs will indeed be happening all over hipster land. Pitchfork reported earlier this week that four songs will have Antony’s deep throat notes and you can stream the first one, “Roar,” at their myspace.
