Windy City Times: A Closer Look At Prop 8 Donors

March 2, 2009

Photobucket

“In the coming weeks, there will be more articles on those who contributed for and against Prop 8.” That is how this week’s piece by Yasmin Nair, writing for the Windy City Times, finishes her article called “Prop 8 Donors: A Closer Look.” Since the passage of Prop 8 and the advent of eightmaps.com, the flurry of gay fury that has swept our community has not ended, nor should it. Nair’s article, naming names on both sides of the contribution lists, is really digging, and it looks like we are going to get personal here in Chicago. My last post about this got TPR called “fascist” in the comments and I hope that as the people who donated $$ for Prop 8 get shamed and exposed in their communities, people will think twice before contributing to hate. On the flip, I hope that people who donated against Prop 8 get the honor and credit that they deserve.

Eightmaps.com

February 9, 2009

It’s been generating quite a stir, and for good reason. Eightmaps.com is a website that is using the internet age to make information more accessible, and some people don’t like it. Specifically, what eightmaps does is use disclosure laws about political donations (in this case, Prop 8 contributions) and puts the names and zip codes of the people/businesses that did so on a google map. Some are opposed to what eightmaps does because it opens up individuals to harassment from others with a different opinion on the matter. TPR says that you should be held accountable for your political contributions; I want to know if a co-worker who is nice to my face is working against my civil liberties in private.

Towleroad Has the Scoop For Evanston’s ‘Milk’ Protest

November 24, 2008

I’ll always call out Towleroad on its ad pandering and failure to check its hateful comments, but they scooped Evanston’s protest at the Century Cinema this past weekend. From the looks of it, there was a good turn out, and “No More Mr. Nice Gay” is really spreading. Thank gay-loving-god!

Protest This Saturday, We Still Love Dan Savage

November 12, 2008

In addition to the obvious fire in his intellectual crotch, the Op-Ed piece in the NYT by Dan Savage really posed some great questions about the results of Prop 8′s passing. It is right to ask, if this now, what next? When will this end? And I always applaud his inclusion of the straights that are affected by the sweeping laws’ far reaching implications. His spot on this week’s Colbert Report was hysterical too. If you are at all concerned about your rights and your friend’s rights, get over to a rally near you this Saturday for a Nation-Wide protest. Join the Impact is a directory for all the protests happening in the U.S., you can browse by state and this page has Chicago’s info. Stand united and fight this shit!

The Utah Boycott

November 8, 2008

After the brown cow-shitstorm that was Proposition 8, this past election cycle left a nasty taste in my mouth – what to do now? Let’s all hate Utah. Seriously. Information has been steadily coming out that the state of Utah and the Mormon Church pretty much funded the entire Prop 8 campaign. Mormons Stole Our Rights is a new site dedicated to spreading the news that Utah and most of its residents are the new bane of our gay existence. Go and sign their petition to strip the Mormon Church of their 501(c)3 status. With is ski slopes and annual Sundance Film Festival, Utah is ripe for boycott, this bitch-church is going down. Read about this more here, here and especially here.
