Stereogamous

April 6, 2010

Photobucket

While some of his early originals struck me as too blown-out-Ibiza-white-party-mega-mix, Australia’s Stereogamous‘s latest tracks have been hitting my sweet spot. The right vocal edits, hard bass-lines and running synths have dropped trow with his self-penned “sauna beat,” and some brash outness only thickens the steam. Follow him on twitter @stereogamous to get his latest, grab two below.

New Xiu Xiu

January 7, 2010

Photobucket

The latest lineup change for Xiu Xiu only reinforces that Jamie Stewart IS the name. He’s been the only constant member of the band and thankfully has maintained a quality level unmatched by a lot of his mopey contemporaries. In an interview I did with him several years ago, he emphasized how collaborative the project was, but let’s be real. His quivering voice and aorta-as-faucet lyrics are what give Xiu Xiu its identity, and no one dies a cathartic death on record and on stage like he does. I remember standing in the sweltering heat at Pitchfork one year and he pretty much shut everyone up and made the audience cry. Quite a feat, for a festival of scenesters. The new album is called Dear God, I Hate Myself and is available for Pre-order right now at Kill Rock Stars (vinyl dorks take note, there is a limited edition YUMMMMMMY). The first free mp3 is available for download here, it’s called “Gray Death” and is pulsing, pathetic and totally amazing.

Peaches – Talk To Me

April 11, 2009

Photobucket

I said it before, and I’ll say it again: this might be a good time to renew your faith in Peaches. Production by Simian Mobile Disco, Soulwax, Drums of Death and a guest spot by Shunda K, May 5TH is sure to be a good day for beat-driven gender fucking. There is a really interesting mini-documentary about Peaches’ history and her vision over at peachesrocks.com. Merrill Nisker is once again leaving an off-white stain on the indie community, and I’m excited. I Feel Cream‘s songs are all over the internet if you l.o.o.k. hard enough, don’t rely on me kids. Vid for lead single “Talk To Me” below, tracklist after the jump.

Lester Greene – Hip Hop Pickle Surprise

April 1, 2009

Photobucket

Oh man, I’m so excited about Lester Greene. You know how most people have left myspace and now only use it to listen to new music? Well splish-splashing in the sea of mediocre adds (I do check out all queer bands that friend TPR) was Lester Greene, an MC and producer. Dripping with personality, not since Johnny Dangerous have I seen such bravado: this guy’s chest puffing reaches DD cups, and luckily he has the skills to back it up. Tracks like “Swerve” actually do twist and turn around the backbeat, and when Greene busts out the auto-tune, he sounds like the best Kanye and T-Pain moments put together. And in case you didn’t know he could kid around, his album will be called “No Bush, Straight Dicks.” Check out some downloads below, and show him some love on the myspace.

John Alexander of Salem’s Flickr Page

Salem continues to enrapture the underground. This is one of those times when I can’t help but think that hipsters rally around a band or sound simply because they know that it will never make it mainstream, and therefore never lose its cred. Don’t think I am hating, there is a compelling inspiration behind making “goth-electro-juke.” And after that crazy music video and intense interview in Butt Magazine with singer John Holland, it is no wonder this trio (yes they are a trio and the 3rd is a lady and no one has ever bothered to ask her anything, WTF) of artists are making a splash. I was even further intrigued when I found John’s flickr page.

Peaches Touring with Drums of Death

March 10, 2009

Photobucket

I don’t know about y’all, but these days when I hear about a new Peaches album, I get a little scared. Don’t get me wrong, the lady has done a lot for sex. As in, she has single handedly allowed hipsters to talk about it, and be a little sore when they walk the walk about it. I was able to interview her during the Fatherfucker tour, and let me tell you: she has strong vision and nothing but love for anyone with a freeness about sexuality. HOWEVER Impeach My Bush, her last record, mostly collapsed under her own weight, and I was beginning to doubt. The sounds started dating themselves, and I was worried it would be the end.  But I wouldn’t want an indie scene without her! THANK GOD she started remixing, because her remixes have been stellar. This week, it was with great relief that I read she was letting some new blood into her labia-fold, and here come Drums Of Death. Tourmates and album contributors for Peaches circa 2009, it is always good news when a veteran gets a youngsta she inspired to help out. It’s like the sexual circle if life. Drums Of Death is from the UK and released a Peaches inspired mixtape that embeds the new song “I Feel Cream,” the title track of the record (hint: some hot shit starts right around the middle and continues right at the end).

Download below, tour dates and album track list after the jump. I Feel Cream is out May 5th on XL Recordings.

Atlas Sound Record Out Today

February 19, 2008

Photobucket

Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel is such a good title for a record. Especially a debut from Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox. His stage antics can only point to a spillage of internal demons and the soft, hazy songs he records as Atlas Sound can only point to a melancholy flipside, a calmer face of arty bi-polarism. If you’re a fan, you already know how many songs Cox posts on the Deerhunter blog. It seems like theres a new CD-R EP every week available for download from him and I have to say, I’m never disappointed. The songs are awash in Twin Peaks-ish vibes that recall fog and abuse, and the song structures allude to folky pop buried in soft electronics. This record is perfect for these late winter days of hibernating. Posting some songs here would be dumb–there’s soooo much online already: official album songs streaming at the myspace, more demos and covers at the blog. Go.

Run-on sentence about Cut Copy’s So Cosmic DJ Mix:
Cut Copy’s So Cosmic re-contextualizes the Daft Punkification of current electronic music in a heartfelt dance mix that is smooth, subtle and nostalgic while looking forward, thereby providing a beat driven slap in the face to the tech-proficient but ultimately soulless indie-lebrities Justice, MSTRKRFT, and Simian Mobile Disco.

Fairy Dusted

December 27, 2007

fairys

How happy was I to get my 1st ever Palms Out Release on chubby 12″vinyl this week? It took on a metaphysical ecstaticism, if that’s possible. What I’m most excited about is that these tracks are not light, understated or in any way amateur. They are full blown, detailed, nuke the dance floor in your brain tracks that have no problem taking over the world. From their site:

Fagget Fairys consist of DJ Sensimilla & MC ENA, feeding you with electro-grime beats and sweet baile balkan rap… It’s a journey through heavy basslines, electro-techno beats and the live performance of MC ENA.

When you order the 12″ you will be sent a link with digital versions of the vinyl tracks along with extra remixes by Zombie Disco Squad, Ooh Ee, Three is a Crowd, Boody B and more! As an enticement, Palms Out has been giving away the first track for free. Big Stereo posted the Bloody B remix a while back. Get ‘em below and then go and buy the record. I’ve already talked about how an mp3 blog starting a record label and selling hard copies of music is part of the revolution that is changing the face of the music industry. With every click you can be a part of this from the ground floor and get some hot tracks from a Dutch Danish lesbian electro duo to boot!!

More Itty Bitties

November 11, 2007

* Cartoon from patheticgeekstories.com

After years of anticipation, Jamie Babbit’s new film “Itty Bitty Titty
Committee” will finally be screening in Chicago next week as part of
this years Reeling Film Festival. Most of you have seen and loved
Babbit’s 1999 queer-teens-in-love film “But I’m a Cheerleader,” and
some of you might have been at just the right age to have had your
lives changed by its gentle and attractively-packaged message of
acceptance. You may laugh, but I’ve been carrying around my VHS copy
(recorded off HBO during the summer of 2000 while my grandmother slept
upstairs) from apartment to apartment for years now as a security
blanket.

“But I’m a Cheerleader” also boasted one of the best soundtracks never
to be released officially. If you’re a devoted indie rock lesbian
you’ve long since hunted down the tracks and burned a copy yourself; I
remember sitting on the floor of my grandmother’s living room at 3AM
advancing frame by frame through the end credits and writing down
every last artist and song to appear in the film, so that Napster and
I wouldn’t miss a single tune. That night I heard Dressy Bessy, St.
Etienne, Go Sailor, April March, Lois, Tattle Tale, and that awesome
Wanda Jackson song — all for the first time. They shocked me,
completely changing my feelings about music, and especially about
music made by women.

From what I’ve read, where “But I’m a Cheerleader” was soft and
indiepop, “Itty Bitty Titty Committee” is going to be loud and punk
rock. Doesn’t it sound like fun, sitting in a theater full of excited
queers, listening to women shout and guitars feed back? I’ve got
faith that the rest of the movie – you know, the plot and the acting
and all – are going to be thoroughly entertaining, but it’s the
soundtrack I really can’t wait for.

As of February 2, 2006, there was a kind, obsessed soul out there offering to burn people home made BIAC soundtracks at cost.
