We See You John Parot

April 9, 2010

John Parot once introduced himself to me at the MCA. It was one of the first weekends for the museum’s Andy Warhol exhibit, the BF and I walked in and John came right up to us, said he was Chicago’s foremost expert on Warhol history, and proceeded to walk us through the gallery. His humor, energy and sassy arrogance notwithstading, the funny part was that he and I had already met, several times, he’d just forgotten. He’s the kind of gay a little oblivious to his surroundings that’s constantly creating outlandish scenarios in his head while others are talking, and then interjecting said unrelated scenario into the conversation, inevitably leading to uproarious group laughter.

I’d be less willing to dish personal deets about a former-Chicagoan (now LA) and cutie artist friend, but he’s been holed up in nowhere land and the reason has finally surfaced. He’ll be a contestant on Bravo’s new reality show “Work of Art.” From the website: “Work of Art: The Next Great Artist will bring together fourteen aspiring artists to compete for a solo show at a nationally recognized museum and a generous cash prize. In each episode, contestants are faced with the challenge of creating unique pieces in a variety of mediums such as painting, sculpture, photography, collage and industrial design. Completed works of art will be appraised by our panel of top art world figures alongside a new celebrated guest judge every week.”

Sooooooo I’m thinking John could take over. He always did.

Below, John made the animations for Logan Lynn‘s music video to “Bottom Your Way to the Top,” filmed at Chicago’s Touche.

Queer Music Video Roundup

November 24, 2009

Winner of season one of Rupaul’s Drag Race (didn’t watch it? your loss, total queer empowerment happening on that show) Bebe Zahara Benet’s debut single and music video is out and I gotta say, I’ma spin it. A simple title, “I’m the Shit,” repeated enough to make you believe it, is just what I need right about now. That, and her looks in the video are like a tall glass of water compared to the atrocities Lady Gaga has been spurting out (that short mannequin can go away now, thx).

Seattle’s Perfume Genius, a recent BUTT blog find, is charming in the opposite way. Understated, buried  pop songs with slow, patient music videos seem like a reaction to today’s lightning speed communication culture. Firmly influenced by Angelo Badalamenti, this song “No Problem” is perfect winter music – take a pause with this warmth.

Logan Lynn’s recent album From Pillar To Post has been getting a big media push, not the least of which is this music video for the song “Bottom Your Way to the Top.” Not his strongest track, but I’m pretty stoked about the video. Filmed at Chicago’s bear bar, Touche, by local film maker Jeffrey Mchale, it also features illustrations by Chicago ex-pat John Parot.

Sensitive synth-pop fans take note, you’ll want to get this record. From Pillar to Post is gaining steam, and Logan Lynn is offering a free download of his song “Feed Me to the Wolves” in exchange for an email address. Check out his homo-tastic vids and get over to his site for that download. Hunt around for some remixes and his other records too, this is perfect falling into autumn music.

Logan Lynn

April 28, 2009

One of the many recent finds over at Young Creature is Logan Lynn, a lonely-synth artist from Portland. Logan Lynn is well on his way already, many myspace friends and facebook fans, he’s got several albums and EP’s under his belt and is pretty much ready for the big time. Going through his songs and visual art, as well as his LogoOnline love, makes me wonder where the hell I’ve been! Love it or hate it (I happen to love it) we are all connecting in easier, better ways in 2009 and Logan Lynn is something I have been waiting for: minor-key pop based in electronics. Check out his sexy video for “Feed Me To The Wolves” above, two choice selections of his visual art below, and show him some love when his new album, From Pillar To Post, drops this summer.
