I Blogged For BUTT

December 10, 2009

Photobucket

It’s true. A little while ago, they put a call out for writers, and I snapped that up like it was BOGO dress shirts from Express (I don’t have lofty fashion goals…not YET, anyway). For my first contribution, I interviewed Marc Ruvolo, a sweet sweet honey bear that has a tribute to Klaus Nomi call Aspic Tines. The interview went well and I hope to do more for the BUTT Blog. Head over to the post and won’t you leave a comment? PREESH.

Old Gossip Interview Making Me Nostalgic

July 8, 2009

Photobucket

Sitting here listening to Music For Men, I can’t help but think of how far they’ve come and am proud to say they’ve stayed true to themeselves throughout. I was reading this really old interview with their guitarist (you can tell it’s old because he’s billed and Nathan, and not Brace Payne) and it’s cool to go back and see him holding on to their punk roots. I mean, today punk is for sale at Hot Topic, and while I fucking love Hot Topic, there is nothing radical about punk. What is radical is being yourself in the face of $$, and resisting the urge to change just to make a little extra. Beth Ditto is out, she’s def making headway for the trans community and women of size and while their sound is more polished, thier lyrics are still based in empowering our yoof. Anyhow, check out the interview where Nathan talks about making sure their sound never got to clean, and not using bass. It’s cute.

John Alexander of Salem’s Flickr Page

Salem continues to enrapture the underground. This is one of those times when I can’t help but think that hipsters rally around a band or sound simply because they know that it will never make it mainstream, and therefore never lose its cred. Don’t think I am hating, there is a compelling inspiration behind making “goth-electro-juke.” And after that crazy music video and intense interview in Butt Magazine with singer John Holland, it is no wonder this trio (yes they are a trio and the 3rd is a lady and no one has ever bothered to ask her anything, WTF) of artists are making a splash. I was even further intrigued when I found John’s flickr page.

No More Potlucks

*Catherine Opie

So many times in my gay life have I wished to live in Canada. Icka Prick & Iron Pussy keeps me updated on the goings on up there, and does so very well. Many posts about sex-work and off the radar shit happening in smarter upper half of North America, and I hope to visit again soon. This week, IP&IP pointed me to this dope interview with Catherine Opie at nomorepotlucks.org, another fierce Canadian queer “journal of politics, arts, and culture.” With NMP’s streamable Dyke on Mykes podcasts, media section dedicated to queer arts and music, NMP is a definitley a resource for queer women. The first issue is up now. Go.

TPR #4

Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae

For this edition, we have songs by the Faint and new pop star Janelle Monae. Respectively, “The Geeks Were Right,” and “Many Moons” are the latest favorite songs. We also have a a phone call with Erik and Ruth where a first try goes wrong and then for the rest, Ruth’s audio gets clipped (that’s the distorted sound). Finally, we have encounters with two people from UR Chicago Magazine while at the Raven Fest and an interview with playwright Sharon Greene. The interview was very fun, with Sharon being very open and smart. We sat at Winnemac Park and talked about her new full length “Fake Lake,” the Neo-Futurists and being out, as well as “post-queer.” Erik’s still wondering about this term–if it is a new era in the queer rights movement, TPR needs to know!

*OMG Michelle at Bodega

For this 3rd show, Ruth gets her first interview with Poppy, the leader of the Queer Queens of Qomedy, and Erik talks to DJ and producer Kingdom along with OMG Michelle outside of their show at the Bodega in Brooklyn. Learn about the correct uses of the terms “homothug,” “banji,” and “AG” and “post-queer.” So fun!

The Onion Interviewed Beth Ditto

Read the whole interview here. As always, spare yourself some grief and don’t read the comments at the end of the Onion’s piece, hipsters are such idiots.

Some quotables:

AVC: Obviously the band has a very queer-friendly philosophy, but do you worry at all about being pigeonholed as exclusively a queer act, especially after signing to Music With A Twist?

BD: I don’t really care. I could give a shit. I think if I were someone who takes themselves completely seriously as an artist I would, but I don’t take myself that seriously, I don’t think Gossip takes itself that seriously. You don’t pigeonhole yourself, people pigeonhole you. If the world is not at a place yet where it can just be like, “This music is gay and it’s music,” then it’s not my fault that it gets pigeonholed, it’s not the people in the band’s fault, it’s because people won’t just let music be music, people who need to put a name on something or to critique something. And I’m not saying that whole shit with, “Man, labels are labels,” because I don’t really agree with that either. It’s interesting how people always ask the band that question when they should be asking the media that question.

AVC: Right, but there’s a real cult of personality around you, and—

BD: Do I ever worry if that takes away from the band? [Laughs.] I think if anything, it really helps the band, I think it’s been really good. We didn’t start a band to be hugely popular, we never had an idea that our record would go beyond Kill Rock Stars, and before that, we never even thought we would make it onto Kill Rock Stars. It’s really interesting—and I love LCD Soundsystem and all these bands—but when you see that dickhead Isaac Brock on the cover of a magazine, nobody asks him, “Aren’t you worried that it’s taking away from the band?” I think it’s a really sexist point of view, and people only ask women that question. I would love to see someone ask James from LCD Soundsystem if he’s ever worried that Death From Above is going to take away from LCD Soundsystem. People never ask that question. It’s like they get to be geniuses or they get to be put on the pedestal because they have cocks. I think that’s one thing that bothers me about it, the sexist part of it, and that it’s just socially unjust. But it doesn’t tear us apart. I think Gossip is better than it’s ever been, and more productive than it’s ever been. But the thing that bothers me about it is that it’s a female question, like “Shouldn’t you feel guilty about all the attention that you get?” I can’t remember the last time I saw all of Modest Mouse or LCD Soundsystem on the cover of a magazine.

Panda Toes Interviews Yo Majesty

February 11, 2008
Photobucket

Nice going, Panda Toes! Check out the interview with Shunda K here and check out the remix competition winner DJ By Product’s take on “Club Action” below. Here’s a couple of quotes:

“It’s not about being gay, but lack of respect as being a female emcee period has been a challenge.”

“We’re not surprised of our success. This is why we’ve been working so hard and it’s a blessing people are [still] feeling our music from 5-6 years ago.”

Stream some new tracks at their myspace and keep looking for a release date for their debut album on Domino Records, it should be up soon enough.
