Bitch to Quit

December 17, 2009

Photobucket

I have a close personal friend that participated in this smoking cessation group and it was the only thing that got him to quit. He’s now 2.5 years without a puff, and I made an audio piece about his experience for Vocalo.org (you can listen to it here, if you want). If you are thinking about quitting smoking for the new year, this might be a great opportunity to try a new approach. I had tried seven times before my final attempt, it was probably one of the biggest tests of will I have ever endured. You don’t have to be alone! Try it with other homos!

Chicago’s only LGBT smoking cessation program will provide an 8-session smoking cessation program, support from a trained smoking cessation counselor and sliding scale program fees based on your income. Space is limited, so call Karen today to reserve your place! 773-388-8682 Tuesday & Saturday groups available.

Bitch to Quit

January 15, 2008

Take a deep breath Chicago, can you smell that smoke-free air? If you’ve been out at the bars or paid any attention to the news, then you’re probably aware that the State of Illinois has gone smoke-free. While the sight of smokers shivering outside of bars does pull at my heartstrings a bit, the new laws make it a bit easier for me to stay an ex-smoker. Last April, I joined Howard Brown’s “Put It Out,” a smoking cessation group that helps Queer smokers finally kick that habit. Obviously, it worked for me. So if you’re standing outside your favorite bar and wondering if it’s time to quit, now might be the perfect time.

Howard Brown’s new “Bitch to Quit” schedule is up and running and they’re looking for smokers ready to take the plunge. “Bitch to Quit” was the name of the former female only smoking cessation group, but has been combined with “Put It Out” under that name. It’s a mixed gender group that gives smokers an amazing amount of resources so that they are armed and ready to quit. If there is any group that needs to quit smoking, it’s us! The statistics regarding smoking and the GLBT community are alarming. GLB men are 50% more likely to smoke than the general population and LBT women are 200% more likely. Scary stuff isn’t it?

So do yourself a favor and try to quit, especially now that you have another resource. More information, including a schedule of groups for the year and contact information for the program’s coordinator, Kristin Torres, can be found by visiting Howard Brown’s website. The website also provides good information for those looking for quitting resources in other areas.

World Aids Day is Today

December 1, 2007

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

These photos are from a controversial French ad campaign from from World Aids Day 2006, but their effect has not diminished, methinks.

All the many times I’ve gone to get a free, anonymous HIV test, the professional people at Howard Brown or T-Pan have always been happy and surprised to note that I am so concerned about my health. “Especially because you are so young,” they say. I’m not impressed with myself about wanting to know my status, but if AIDS care workers are, then there has to be some alarming amount of indifference going on in the people they see. After the recent, tragic failure of an HIV vaccine, the many reports about Africa and continuing rise in world-wide infections, we’ll be collectively living with this for generations. Know your status. Protect yourself. Educate others. Fucking google it:
