Kingdom’s Mindreader EP

I’ve been on the record about dubstep, and in general I don’t think it’s a genre that will last. When it hits, it’s because it’s being taken in with other styles – however my impression of unruffled dubstep is that it will go the way of jungle. A few nostalgic nerds here and there will remember the days when but ultimately it’ll go away. Kingdom has always played around with dubstep, but it comes out as a way to experiment with his true loves–he invariably gravitates towards fierce female raps and divas, the gay dance floor and HI-NRG sap. That type of genre competence is the kitten heel to stiletto step, the difference between a trendy hack and a trailblazer. A few mixtapes and digital singles under his belt, Ezra Rubin has hooked up with the infallible Acephale Records for his first vinyl release: a 10″ hot-plate with “Mindreader” on the A side and “You” on the flip. The digital EP version has remixes by Todd Edwards, L-Vis, and Bok Bok, so broke DJ’s will get big bang for their little buck, but the two track vinyl is where the real story is. Acephale’s small but braggable catalogue has the first Salem EP, CFCF, Midnight Juggernauts, Air France and Memory Tapes, all limited, most of them already sold out. Get on it, this is limited to 500 copies with no repress, matte finish sleeve with silver foil embossing. YUSSS.

Lester Greene – Hip Hop Pickle Surprise

April 1, 2009

Oh man, I’m so excited about Lester Greene. You know how most people have left myspace and now only use it to listen to new music? Well splish-splashing in the sea of mediocre adds (I do check out all queer bands that friend TPR) was Lester Greene, an MC and producer. Dripping with personality, not since Johnny Dangerous have I seen such bravado: this guy’s chest puffing reaches DD cups, and luckily he has the skills to back it up. Tracks like “Swerve” actually do twist and turn around the backbeat, and when Greene busts out the auto-tune, he sounds like the best Kanye and T-Pain moments put together. And in case you didn’t know he could kid around, his album will be called “No Bush, Straight Dicks.” Check out some downloads below, and show him some love on the myspace.

Kanye’s Still Not Gay

February 11, 2009

Thanks to a few blown-out-of-context media pranks, Kanye’s sexuality has been at the top of many gossip pantries. Even TPR’s post about Terrance Dean’s book Hiding in Hip Hop, that went up ages ago, is still getting major hits. People must love them some closeted celebs! I’m not going to call it on Kanye. I do want to note that recently, he was confronted about his style and sexuality on MTV and never once did he say anything that was fearful or hateful. Of course, he was all Kanye about it, and made everything about how awesome he thinks he is, but considering how many opportunities he has had to just scream “I am not a faggot!” he’s been playing it well. The above photo got him some unnecessary shit over hanging with gay guys (you can’t be an artist and not), the below quotes are from the MTV interview. Watch the vid of his spot and the “I ain’t gay” freestyle he did on camera here. Thanks to Chicago’s best hip hop blog, Fake Shore Drive for the tip.

I’m doing a blog right now where I’ve been collecting all of the freshest stuff that’s rainbows — Denver Nuggets jerseys, BAPE shoes, Nikes with rainbows on ‘em — and saying, “Man I think as straight men we need to take the rainbow back because it’s fresh.” It looks fresh. I just think that because stereotypically gay people got such good like style that they were smart enough to take a fresh-ass logo like the rainbow and say that it’s gonna be theirs. But I was like “Man I think we need to have the rainbow” — the idea of colors , life and colors and stuff, I mean how is that a gay thing? Colors? Having a lot of colors is gay?

Sway: You once were quoted saying that you were inspired in fashion by how gay people dress.

West: And you know what? That’s when I was ignorant to gays. ‘Cause there’s a lot of gay people who don’t dress good at all. There’s a lot of gay people that I dress way better than.

Terrance Dean’s Book: Hip Hop is Gay

May 12, 2008

A book entitled Hiding in Hip-Hop: Confessions of a Down Low Brother in the Entertainment Industry, by former MTV producer Terrance Dean is set to go on sale tomorrow, and I’m not sure if I’m as excited as everyone else. It doesn’t seem to name names, and is more of an awareness tool about the industry. While the press alludes to scandalicious details, it seems more like a book that says “there are gays in the entertainment industry,” which is, you know, redundant. A quote from Dean in a recent article in the Guardian:

Leading hip hop artists such as Eminem, DMX and Ice Cube have all been targeted by gay activists for using homophobic lyrics. One of Eminem’s songs famously included the line: ‘Hate fags? The answer’s yes.’ In his book Dean describes a world in which hip hop stars and executives often berate and denigrate homosexuals, and the use of the word ‘faggot’ is common place. He says that too often he let such abuse pass by, and writing a memoir was a way of making up for that. ‘I am a part of this culture. I was getting by, saying it’s OK when those things are said. But then I realised they are actually talking about me too,’ Dean said.

We’ll either be pummeled with headlines about this book or it will be a footnote, but it will be a historical piece about a culture that is very ‘out’ about their homophobia. Buy it at amazon.

UPDATE: A lot of interest for this post–everyone wants to know the names that aren’t named. Listen to an interview with Terrance Dean on the Wendy WIlliams radio show, you’ll see how much doesn’t get said. “It wasn’t about naming names, it was about telling my story,” is as far as it goes. Not that I want to know or anything…

PSYCHO FAG: More Petite Than Others

January 27, 2008

Photobucket

There comes a time in a person’s life where you realize that there are other adults in the world that are really young. Full grown youngstas where their youth is the primary reason you just don’t get it, and…that’s okay. The fiery, quick-twink rap that PSYCHO FAG spits is nimble and brazen like a pocket ninja and as you can see, his fellow U.K. kids dig it. Fully challenging ears too old for that which is too loud, the production is competent and edgy, giving this queer grime a chance to impress before you realize that everyone else in the room looks like a fashionable child. You can check out the myspace for more tracks, I’ve got the song “Stop the Pop” and an Ugly remix by Alan MX.

Behind Every Good Girl Band, There’s a Hot Homothug

Palms Out Sounds, always one of the best places to find the hottest floor-creaming tracks, is getting ready to break out in a major way. 2008 is literally the future as a record label, an expanded contributors list and cutting edge look and feel will give Palms Out first dibs on answering many questions about what the hell is happening to the music industry. With their first 12″ by Danish lesbian duo Fagget Fairys available for pre-order, we have the paradox of an Mp3 blog selling hard copies of music. I’m SO there.

This week, Palms Out clued me into the cock friendly mind of DJ, Producer, homothug and now svengali Kingdom–an attractive Brooklynite making his first splish-splashes in the music mogul hot tub. A slammin’ mixtape on the myspace, regular gigging and now a girl group Michelle–a Crime Mob-ish crew of divas ready to give hipster rap circles a new spin. Mp3′s and a link to his mixtape below, and while I couldn’t find the tracklist, R&B, house, thugrave, and old school hip hop are present in a fine 55 minute balance perfect for parties with tallboys and booties.
