…a while ago. But as spring creeps out of the worst winter Chicago has seen in years, this electro-disco smoothness is just what I needed. Check out Aeroplane’s myspace and enjoy the track + remix below.
Seeing Hercules and Love Affair live is like getting a full band to play you a DJ’s mixtape. Fucking great. Pitchfork had the band on their Brooklyn rooftop for their “Don’t Look Down” series. LOVE the back up dancer. Check out “You Belong” up there and the gorgeous sunset-propped “Hercules Theme” over at Pitchfork.tv.
Seeing Hercules & Love Affair this past summer was quite an experience. A party band to the core, the queer energy bounced off that stage like healthy balls. Who knows what is in store for H & LA? Only the greek gods know, but it’s not surprising that we now have a side project from Hercules singer Nomi and some of the other band members. No, Andy Butler or Antony are not anywhere near this, but familiar it is (and that’s a good thing). Deep Red has two songs up on their myspace and have been playing some NYC shows. I’m hoping they can un-smooth the sound a little, but with one of their concerts featuring only Sade covers, that might not be in the tranny cards.
It did not take long for Hercules and Love Affair to blow up (win free tickets this week, deadline is Friday, 10am). One of the bands many queer members and front people is Kim Ann Foxman, a cutie butch with a silky voice. The cover of the latest issue of Girls Like Us has Kim Ann looking real relaxed with her undercut and googly eyes. Also in this issue is:
Pauline Doutreluingne by Sarah Keenan
Constant Craving by Azsa West
Marjan Sax by Quirine Racké
Pas de Deux by Carissa Mares
Kim Ann Foxman by Jessica Gysel
The Hunger by Eden Batki
Fumble in the Jungle by Melanie Bonajo
Belén *Kanki* Fernández by Silvia Prada
Tales from a Girl Gang by Amalia Andrade
George Sandwiches & Rosa Luxemburgers by Kim Renfrew
Cooking Con Amore
Paste & Taste
Having seen (but barely remembering) their concert in NYC on my birthday, I can say Hercules’ show is a juggernaut. Many musicians on that stage, Nomi and Kim Ann competently taking Antony’s vocal duties, an almost continuous mixtape of a set…UGH I can’t wait for their upcoming show at Metro. Anyway, in case you live in the sticks, or even if you want a memento, they are selling a live album, available for download or tangible purchase through Live Here Now.

Seriously. How happy am I about this song? From the Frankie Knuckles Remix to the constant and consistent bloggery to the overall Nina Simone-ness of Antony’s vocal–it just doesn’t get any better than this. All that and finally the hipsters will stop being confused when I drop some disco in an electro set. DFA couldn’t have asked for a better hype machine than this.
Brooklyn’s Hercules and Love Affair are a fine example of experimental disco, not unlike stuff you’d find on a good Soul Jazz complilation. With a limited 12″ on DFA records and an upcoming full length with guest vocals by Antony, muscular love affairs will indeed be happening all over hipster land. Pitchfork reported earlier this week that four songs will have Antony’s deep throat notes and you can stream the first one, “Roar,” at their myspace.
