Old Gossip Interview Making Me Nostalgic

July 8, 2009

Sitting here listening to Music For Men, I can’t help but think of how far they’ve come and am proud to say they’ve stayed true to themeselves throughout. I was reading this really old interview with their guitarist (you can tell it’s old because he’s billed and Nathan, and not Brace Payne) and it’s cool to go back and see him holding on to their punk roots. I mean, today punk is for sale at Hot Topic, and while I fucking love Hot Topic, there is nothing radical about punk. What is radical is being yourself in the face of $$, and resisting the urge to change just to make a little extra. Beth Ditto is out, she’s def making headway for the trans community and women of size and while their sound is more polished, thier lyrics are still based in empowering our yoof. Anyhow, check out the interview where Nathan talks about making sure their sound never got to clean, and not using bass. It’s cute.

New Gossip Demos

November 16, 2008

Photobucket

Queer superstars Gossip have posted three new demos over at their myspace. I must say, they have a long way to go before they finish these tracks. BUT the album is being worked on with FUCKING RICK RUBIN and James Ford (he’s Simian Mobile Disco). I’m excited, but I hope an electronic infusion doesn’t put drummer Hannah Blilie on the wayside. Judge for yourself, I just hope they keep it all fresh.

Gossip: What a Difference Some Money Makes

April 17, 2008

Remember in 2003 when Gossip’s “Undead in NYC” came out and you were all “WTF?” The sound was abysmal to say the least and as a huge fan of their live show, a document it was not. Fast forward to late 2007, and the new major labeled Beth, Brace and Hannah are the only worthwhile group on Sony’s queer artists label, Music With A Twist. ( Have you seen that roster? Ugh.) So after all the hip remixes and eye rolling reactions to Beth’s stage persona, I must say, their first release for MWAT, “Live in Liverpool” is a sigh of relief. Finally capturing their live show’s magic, I’m sitting here rolling my eyes that it had to take some chart topping in the fucking UK in order for this to happen. It’s telling when Beth says, “I can’t believe you knew the words to that song. That’s so weird. But amazing” after singing their only true ballad “Coal to Diamonds.” Compare notes between the Dim Mak released “Undead” and the finally getting stateside attention “Liverpool.”

Gossip–Non Non Non (from Undead in NYC)

Gossip–Coal To Diamonds (from Live in Liverpool)

ps. I was digging for info about Music with a Twist, and their site wasn’t working and Sony’s main pages didn’t have it anywhere. Weird.

After the sturm und drang of the corporate media machine, Portland’s Gossip are quietly posting new music on their myspace. Singer Beth Ditto has been giving me the chills- the boldest cover girl, video diva and mouthy front woman has lead her band to indie stardom. I would have never thought a pro-fat, tranny chasing punk could get so much mainstream attention. Props. Lucky us, as we wait for a new record there have been countless remixes and never ending tours. Run over and have a listen at their new songs 8th Wonder, Spare Me From the Mold and Heavy Kross, and don’t be afraid to give them some feedback. They are still small enough to get your note, and their recent success might require some humbling. Also, here are some remixes and mashups you might have heard already…

A Plus D–Gossip vs. Elastica

Eve Massacre–Gossip vs. Loverboy

Kitsune Maison–Gossip vs. Dangerous Dan vs. Nicky Van She (Gossip Around the World)

Gossip–Yr Mangled Heart (Linus Loves Remix)

Gossip–Jealous Girls (Tommie Sunshine Remix)

Gossip–Jealous Girls (NYPC Remix)

Buy Gossip’s music from their label Kill Rock Stars, itunes, or Back Yard
