Girls Like Us #8 – Kim Ann Foxman Cover

October 16, 2008

It did not take long for Hercules and Love Affair to blow up (win free tickets this week, deadline is Friday, 10am). One of the bands many queer members and front people is Kim Ann Foxman, a cutie butch with a silky voice. The cover of the latest issue of Girls Like Us has Kim Ann looking real relaxed with her undercut and googly eyes. Also in this issue is:

Pauline Doutreluingne by Sarah Keenan
Constant Craving by Azsa West
Marjan Sax by Quirine Racké
Pas de Deux by Carissa Mares
Kim Ann Foxman by Jessica Gysel
The Hunger by Eden Batki
Fumble in the Jungle by Melanie Bonajo
Belén *Kanki* Fernández by Silvia Prada
Tales from a Girl Gang by Amalia Andrade
George Sandwiches & Rosa Luxemburgers by Kim Renfrew
Cooking Con Amore

MathématiquesModernes

As you already know, Girls Like Us has made a compilation of queer music, specifically queer women’s music. It really delivers and it for sure some of its highlights have already been featured on these very pink pages. JD Samson’s project, Hirsute, The Rhythm King and Her Friends, Kingdom’s OMG Michelle, and Bunny Rabbit have all been talked about here. I was glad to unearth some gems from the comp, one of which was “Contact,” by French avant-popsters MathématiquesModernes, a cover of Serge Gainsbourg. Recorded in 1981, this is the only vintage track on the CD and it pops like a belly button outie. Check it out below, then head on over to Girls Like Us and get your own. Finally, Edwige Belmore, from MathématiquesModernes, lives in Brooklyn and keeps a blog.

Scored Some Girls

June 11, 2008

Years ago, when BUTT magazine first came out, there was supposed to be a lesbian equivalent called KUTT, but I never saw one and it might have just turned out be a rumor. However, the audience is there for a smart, real, alternative magazine by and about queer female artists. Enter Girls Like Us, a mag based in the Netherlands that is anti-vanilla, pro-edge and basically as cool as it gets. I was window shopping over at Chicago Comics on Clark on Monday, and somehow, they got a shipment of back issues, including issue #1!! Head over right now for the out of print editions featuring Peaches, Katie Sketch, and other fine female artists. The current issue has a brief interview with Faye Driscoll, a choreogapher whose work can be seen with Chicago’s Same Planet Different World Dance, a fresh modern dance company.
