The 28th annual Queer Film Festival in Chicago, Reeling 2009, is set to go from November 5th -15th and I’m happy to say the roster includes two movies made by folks who have been getting TPR support for years. Fish Out of Water, the documentary by Ky Dickens about the bible and homosexuality, will have its Chicago premiere on Sunday November 8th at 5pm at the Music Box Theater, with post-film reception hosted and sponsored by In Fine Spirits (5420 N. Clark St.). On Wednesday November 11th at 7pm, The Landmark will screen the world premiere of Riot Acts: Flaunting Gender Deviance in Music Performance, a documentary about trans musicians by Chicago’s very own Actor Slash Model. I’m busy combing through the other entries to see what else I’m excited about, but I’m SO HAPPY about these two that I had to post. Stay tuned, will have ticket giveaways soon!

Lady Bunny: TPR Hates Her

June 19, 2009

Photobucket

In the last 6 years, Chicago’s queer scene has evolved into an enviable beast. FKA, the Chances crew, Stardust, GenderJUST, the Windy City Times and all of you independent thinkers that sometimes come together to just fucking express yourselves have created a truly mobile, hip and accepting culture. So when some NYC drag queen rides into the Chi on fast-unfastening cred, calls us a 2nd tier city and proceeds to BEG to go back to a time when it was okay to hate vaginas, the irony is more disappointing than offensive.

Fish Out of Water, a Chicago-based film seeking to further the current civil rights movement by addressing the bible and homosexuality, is the complete antithesis to Lady Bunny’s ignorance extravaganza. I’m not privy to the details that led to the fund raiser last night at Berlin, but Stardust and FOOW could not have been prepared. For sure, I love the work that Stardust does and Berlin Nightclub is my safe-bet good time, but by the time Lady Bunny was mid-through her show, all the women in the audience had left and I was ashamed to still be there. The work that we have put in to achieve a community that talks to itself, loves one another and educates the ignorant was willfully farted upon by a HAS BEEN, and you bet your ass I was booing and screaming until we cut that tired queen off the stage. Some were mumbling about elders, and the work that ol’ girl did with Wigstock, but you know what? THIS IS NOT THEN AND HAVE MOVED WAY PAST BEING STUPID, IGNORANT FAGGOTS. I don’t care if you are wearing a dress or wearing out your thrift store sneaks, if you identify as queer and make retard jokes or are willfully under-educated about gender theory, you are NOT fierce or funny and not deserving the respect and adoration of our up and coming baby-gays. We are currently [ ] this close to getting equality on the books for Gays and Lesbians, but not week goes by where I see people stare at and whisper about the tranny on the train. Infinitely more frustrating than correcting straights with their pronouns is telling a gay man that his male privilege is REAL.

Lady Bunny, take your nasty back to NYC, a place that’s anonymous enough and with sufficient cash to put up with your stank ass. Chicago doesn’t want you! Our community is learning to love each other and we don’t need you fucking it up with dated BULLSHIT. I’m glad we USED your name to raise some $$ for FOOW, but sorry to say that we gave you a platform.

THINK PINK RADIO #7 – THE BIBLE AND HOMOSEXUALITY

October 2, 2008

Photobucket

When talking about religion, practitioners might get zealous and non-believers roll their eyes. It’s a tough realm to engage in without chips flying, Ky Dickens is trying to capture the debate on homosexuality and the bible on camera and with a light tone. Using animation and narration, the film she has been making for about 2 years is in its final stages, and needs one final push to get it out of the power mac and onto screens across the country. An extensive amount of research, interviews, and stock footage have found her in fun and dangerous situations, and her documentary, Fish Out Of Water is attempting to give the queer community the tools to fight back whenever a bible-thumper comes at us with Sodom and Gomorrah this and men laying with men that. Erik went to Ky’s house and chatted with her about the film, the risks and the benefits of being a queer documentarian and strapping on the bible belt. Music featured in this podcast is by My Bloody Valentine.

Fish Out Of Water’s Preview Party

September 27, 2008

Photobucket

Think Pink has been supporting Ky Dickens and her documentary project for a while, and we are happy to report the film is its final stages. If, like me, you have an ignorant family member that throws jesus around for the sake of hate, this film is for US. To celebrate they are having a preview party and fundraiser on October 11th at Mary’s Attic. From the press release:

Fish Out of Water is a documentary that seizes the issue of homosexuality and the Bible. With a cartoon narrator, animated historical clips and quirky interviews taken from barbershops to truck stops, the film uncovers why certain rhetoric is pumped from the pulpit and how it can tear apart families and blindside elections.

The party is Saturday, October 11th at Mary’s Attic in Andersonville (5400 N. Clark Street, Chicago). At 6:30pm, Chicago’s famed Miki Greenberg will be playing a live cabaret set. Complimentary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served. An exclusive 20-minute Sneak Peek of the film and talk back with filmmakers will conclude the Preview Party, followed by a Post Party with Think Pink Radio’s DJ Stinky Pinky at 9:00pm. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. You can buy tickets in advance here. If you are a student or feel financially strapped, please contact Ky and she will send you the link to purchase a discounted tickets. We encourage you to do so as we want the event to be accessible to all who wish to attend!

If you cannot attend the event, but wish to contribute, all donations are welcome, needed and appreciated! Every little bit counts as we try to cross the finish line. You can donate with a credit card or debit card by going to the pay pal link at our website: http://www.fishoutofwaterfilm.com/donate.html
