Reeling 2009 Has TPR All Stars

October 28, 2009

Photobucket

The 28th annual Queer Film Festival in Chicago, Reeling 2009, is set to go from November 5th -15th and I’m happy to say the roster includes two movies made by folks who have been getting TPR support for years. Fish Out of Water, the documentary by Ky Dickens about the bible and homosexuality, will have its Chicago premiere on Sunday November 8th at 5pm at the Music Box Theater, with post-film reception hosted and sponsored by In Fine Spirits (5420 N. Clark St.). On Wednesday November 11th at 7pm, The Landmark will screen the world premiere of Riot Acts: Flaunting Gender Deviance in Music Performance, a documentary about trans musicians by Chicago’s very own Actor Slash Model. I’m busy combing through the other entries to see what else I’m excited about, but I’m SO HAPPY about these two that I had to post. Stay tuned, will have ticket giveaways soon!

Early Warning: Nicole Kidman in The Danish Girl

March 2, 2009

Photobucket

I’m not sure about this. The blogs are buzzing though, and if it’s true we need to hope for the best. Nicole Kidman, going the way of Felicity Huffman, will be playing the role of Lili Elbe in the upcoming movie, The Danish Girl. Lili Elbe is one of, if not THE first documented transwoman that underwent a series of highly experimental surgeries to transition. For context, this was in the early 1900′s, so you can imagine what she went through. I’d love to be excited, what with Charlize Theron being tapped for Elbe’s partner, but when was the last time a Kidman-project didn’t bore me to death? And the description of the plot over at IMDB sounds white washed in order to squeak by Focus-on-the-Family-Trolls. To echo Antony, why couldn’t they find a real transwoman for this? Oh yeah, the money and hype and possibly a latest attempt to revive a startling downturn in Kidman’s career. I’m all about visibility, but at a time when even the gay community can display unruly amounts of trans-phobia, these stories should not be told by hungry hollywood whores, you know?

CHANNELING : Queer Film on Tour

January 6, 2009

Photobucket

Chicago-based film makers Ethan A White and Latham Zearfoss are taking their latest project on the road and are coming to a town near you. Full dates and details after the jump, and check out their facebook page and blog. From the press release:

CHANNELING is an entryway into the spirit realm and the queer body politic: a loose catalogue of experimental moving image work that calls up the ghosts of the past and the specters of the future. The intent of the program is to re-imagine film and video as occult technologies that allow us to connect with the bodies, experiences, and emotions that are often invisible–ghostly, even–in everyday life. The works in the program take a personal approach in dealing with the political and historical problems that haunt the queer experience: the AIDS pandemic (Renwick, DiStefano), the body in transition (Montague), the idealized nuclear family (Pena, Robinson), and the narrow cultural standards of desirability (EMR, Moulton). CHANNELING presents emerging and established artists critically engaging with these concerns on their own campy, poetic, sexual, humorous, and even utopian terms, using a variety of aesthetic approaches such as digital video, homemade effects, saturated 8mm, home movies, animation, green screen, and more.

Vanessa Renwick – 9 is a Secret (2002, 6:00, video)
Elliot Montague – Well Dressed (2006, 10:00, Super 8mm on video)
Shana Moulton – Whispering Pines #7 (2006, 5:00, video)
Michael Robinson – Carol Anne is Dead (2008, 7:30, video)
EMR (Math Bass & Dylan Mira) – Somethings Gonna Soon (2008, 4:00, video)
Aay Preston-Myint – Some Ghosts (2007, 2:00, video)
Jillian Pena – Compromise (2005, 10:00, video)
John Di Stefano – (tell me why): The Epistemology of Disco (1990, 24:00, video)

Total Running Time: ~68 min.

Against a Trans Narrative

November 19, 2008

Photobucket

In light of the recent execution-style murder of Duanna Johnson, I want to remind everyone that as hard as it is for gays and lesbians, it is much, much tougher for the trannies. While we fight for marriage, a lot of trans-folk are just trying get acknowledgment. It is with great sadness that I read about Johnson’s tragic death, not too much else to say about it. Against A Trans Narrative is a film by Jules Rosskam:

Sitting somewhere between fiction, non-fiction, and experimental film genres. It is as fragmented and complicated as its subject matter. The audience is presented with disparate narrative, home videos, dramatic reenactments, poetry and round-table conversations where people discuss their reactions to the issues presented in the film.

The film analyzes the construction of trans-masculine communities inside the larger cultural framework.

Sneak Preview/Fundraiser for the film this Thursday:

NOVEMBER 20TH
6-9 PM. FILM ROW CINEMA 1104 S. WABASH, 8TH FLOOR
TICKETS $20-50 (SLIDING SCALE). STUDENT AND LOW-INCOME TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR $15

Chicago Premiere of ‘Still Black’

October 24, 2008

The “Studies N Black” festival has been going on at Links Hall for most of October, if you are lucky, then you have already seen some of it. Curated by Baraka de Soleil, the fest showcases a mix of media and art about how “people perceive blackness.” On Saturday, Chicago film-maker Kortney Ryan Zeigler’s Still Black, a documentary about six black trans-men, will screen. In an interesting interview (for next week’s podcast) Zeigler and (partner/producer) Awilda Rodriguez talked about how it is a misconception that black people are less accepting of LGBTQ lifestyles. This film underscores that idea with an exciting take on documentary film-making. Check out their website blackstarmedia.org for more information about the movie and go to Links Hall this weekend to see the movie.
