To be honest, I have never heard Kim Ann Foxman of Hercules & Love Affair spin records, so I can’t vouch for her deck skills. BUT WHO CARES?! The best part about queer indie celebs from bands coming out for a DJ set is the crowd, this is sure to be a sexy mix. Stardust has quickly made a name for itself, being the newest weekly night at the always intense Berlin, and having this petite butch come out for a night is only furthering its reputation. Can’t wait!
2. K8 Hardy directed a video for MEN’s “Off Our Backs.” (If you dig a little, you can listen to that song, and you would find that it rules.)
3. MEN will be selling a 3 track CD sampler on tour in Europe.
4. Sia is making JD a hat.
5. She will be providing some vocals for Punks Jump Up and trading remixes with Discotech.
6. JD likes to write in all caps: GOING ON TOUR AGAIN IS RAD. I WANT TO EAT A LOT OF SPAGHETTI AND DANCE A LOT AND SWEAT EVEN MORE AND HAVE PEOPLE BLEED A LITTLE BIT IN THE AUDIENCE FROM BUMPING HEADS. BUT THEN APOLOGIZING AND HUGGING. MISS YOU CAN’T WAIT.
UPDATE: For a quick minute, JD had a band called Hirsute. TPR has been eagerly awaiting something official, but as I just noticed on MEN’s myspace, Hirsute has been absorbed into MEN: The group began in 2007 as the DJ/production/remix team of LE TIGRE members JD Samson and Johanna Fateman. When the duo began to write new songs, it made sense to merge their efforts with JD’s other new project HIRSUTE. JD and Hirsute members Michael O’Neill (Princess, Ladybug Transistor) and Ginger Brooks Takahashi (LTTR, The Ballet) now comprise the core of MEN, with Johanna and artist Emily Roysdon contributing as writers, consultants, and producers.
What I really appreciate about JD Samson’s steelo is that it sounds like she is having fun. Never afraid of a cowbell or the cute, non-remixed 80′s hit, JD knows when to leave a classic track alone. Her new mixtape for March is no exception. Tracklist below, download link here.

Hey lovers, blogging will be light this week as my computer is in the shop.
Come see me at Neo with DJ Kamar for Atomic, the best thing in Lincoln Park! Thursdays at Neo have always had a retro/new wave vibe with a reputation for the coolest mix of goths, punks, hipsters and queers. SO excited be DJ-ing there for the first time.
Come to Wang’s every Friday from 10pm – 2am and hear some hot ass music! I have started debuting the Stinky Pinky remixes that I am working on at the bar and it has been really fun. Wang’s is located at 3317 N. Broadway in East Lakeview and all the drinks are tasty and strong. AND for your convenience, it has a gender-neutral bathroom.
Prediction: the digital age will make tangible media more expensive and valuable, but also better. People will take a second day and think about it more–do I really need to make this? Is is worth the space it’s taking up? In addition to weeding out crappy ideas, the omnipresent screen will also make nostalgia more selective. Dopejams.net is a vinyl distributor of sorts, maybe you can even call it a record label. Whatever it is, it specializes in unofficial reissues, and they are keen enough to have a little focus on the gay. The store has releases on “Gay Records,” a subsidiary, perhaps; 12″s by Arthur Russell and Sylvester; the website even has a preview stream for each track so you know what you are getting into. Record collectors, beware: you are about to spend some cash.
Don’t even think about missing this one. John Cameron Mitchell is in town this week for a few guest speakings, alma-mater-type things at Northwestern! None other than Hedwig himself and the writer-director of Shortbus will be spinning a queer dance this Friday on Northwestern’ campus. This event is free and open to the public-bring your friends and schlep over to NU for what is sure to be a rare appearance by the JCM. Imagine my surprise when Think Pink got an email from John (first names here, people) asking about a co-dj. Kicking myself for not being able to, I quickly shot a message to my favorite DJ in Chicago, Reaganomix. Head over to this college dorm cafeteria and fondly remember the most awkward cruising of your life!

For this 3rd show, Ruth gets her first interview with Poppy, the leader of the Queer Queens of Qomedy, and Erik talks to DJ and producer Kingdom along with OMG Michelle outside of their show at the Bodega in Brooklyn. Learn about the correct uses of the terms “homothug,” “banji,” and “AG” and “post-queer.” So fun!
So much happening this June. To kick it off, Think Pink Radio’s Stinky Pinky will be joining Greg Haus over at Berlin Nightclub this Friday, June 6th. I’ll be spinning from 10-12:30 and then Greg will come on for his usual electro extravaganza. I cut my teeth and wet my dick on his beats, it is such a happy thing for me to finally be able to spin with him. Come on over and say hi!
As you might know, Roller Derby has made a huge comeback. Tough girls with spiky elbows have found a place to co-miz and kick some ass. The Windy City Rollers have been a Chicago staple for a couple of years now, and it was big news when member Tequila Mockingbird was injured during a game, suffering a spinal injury. Like most Americans, medical insurance has forsaken her, and the community has stepped up to help. A benefit has been planned for this Saturday, February 8th: To Thrill a Mockingbird.
The fun begins at 7pm with a social hour featuring appetizers donated by Charlie’s Ale House, a Best Decorated Helmet Contest with prizes and a chance to mix and mingle with members of the Windy City Rollers. You’ll also have a chance to get derby merch, tickets for the bout on Sunday and enter a special raffle to benefit Tequila Mockingbird! Don’t miss the action when the Dyke Delicious Film Series at Chicago Filmmakers screens the 70′s Cult Classic: “Kansas City Bomber” and “High Heels on Wheels.” $10 at Chicago Filmmakers 5243 N Clark St Chicago, (773) 293-1447.
T’s, Sweet Occasions, Ranalli’s, Starbucks Coffee, Kopi Cafe Chicago, Women and Children First and Alamo Shoes have all donated gift certificates! One of a kind, hand made, derby themed underwear for our silent auction, and gift packages donated by the fierce and fabulous ladies of BOTH Tulip and Early to Bed!!!
After words, all ticket holders will be given 2 drinks for the price of one when they present their ticket stub at Charlie’s Ale House, they’ll have other drink specials and the ladies of the Windy City Rollers will be serving up shots! DJ Sky will be laying down the best in punk, funk, old school and indie to make you shake that booty… ALL TO BENEFIT TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD! Charlie’s Ale House is located at 5308 N. Clark (Across the Street form Chicago Film Makers)
