NYT MTF OMG FML…NOT

April 27, 2009

*ps Amazon was the only place I could find the cover to the book.

Over the weekend, my friends were passing around this article in the NYT about Maddy, the MTF parent who is authoring an essay for “The Book of Dads,” to be published in May by Ecco. Jennifer Finney Boylan is Maddy’s real name, and you have to give some credit to the NYT for putting such a touching story in their paper. Trans folk need as much positive media coverage as possible these days, especially among the liberal elite, and this piece is another drop in the bucket. I couldn’t help but get a little misty-eyed reading it, but a big take-away was, given the right information, how naturally kids can understand gender and its fluidity. I’m not assuming it always comes this easy, but this story is a triumph and we can never have too many of those.

Buddy G

I can’t find any trailers or previews, (save for what might be the intro) but the press release for the cartoon DVD Buddy G sounds really wholesome. Omaha-based Margaux Towne-Colley, Executive Producer of the show, says “Buddy G is a historic development in children’s entertainment. While today’s children have ready access to literature depicting families headed by parents of the same gender, this is the first time that children with two moms or two dads will able to see the star of a show with a family just like their families.”

The star of the cartoon is “Buddy G,” a five year old boy who loves science and solves daily problems with the help of his sidekick “Socrates,” an armband computer with internet capabilities. I’d really like to see a preview, but for now the premiere DVD can be ordered from the cartoon’s website buddyg.tv The website also includes coloring pages for download and Buddy G merch.
