*Catherine Opie

So many times in my gay life have I wished to live in Canada. Icka Prick & Iron Pussy keeps me updated on the goings on up there, and does so very well. Many posts about sex-work and off the radar shit happening in smarter upper half of North America, and I hope to visit again soon. This week, IP&IP pointed me to this dope interview with Catherine Opie at nomorepotlucks.org, another fierce Canadian queer “journal of politics, arts, and culture.” With NMP’s streamable Dyke on Mykes podcasts, media section dedicated to queer arts and music, NMP is a definitley a resource for queer women. The first issue is up now. Go.

“Bo” (1991)

Catherine Opie‘s getting a pretty high profile retrospective at the Guggenheim, and it’s no small feat for the L.A. based lesbian photographer. When her portraits of queer people hit the scene in the early 90′s, the “pictures arrived in the midst of culture wars, but even in that heated atmosphere, Ms. Opie’s portraits delivered a jolt. Included in the 1995 Whitney Biennial, they were like shock troops crashing a mannerly art-world party.” The New York Times has some more snaps.
