Whoa. Planet Ida

May 27, 2009

Photobucket

As much as I roll my eyes at hippies and gatherings of folksy music, I gotta admit Planet Ida and the 8th annual Idapalooza Fruit Jam sounds fun. June 10th-15th, the backwoods of Tennessee will be filled with queers, gay, wimmin, and trannies for a week of camping, queer music and shenanigans. This happens on a private estate, 243 acres of communal farm and I can only guess what goes on in bushes of bushes. Chicago native Lord of the Yum Yum is on the bill, look here for full list of queer performers and schedule. Your donation includes all music and food for the week, meals are vegetarian/vegan and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Camp Aranu’tiq – Summer Camp for Trans Youth

March 31, 2009

If TPR could give out an award for Best New Non-Profit, this would be it. I never got to go to any away camp as a kid, and you can bet your pink and brown asses my parents would not have sent me to a gay camp. This volunteer-run camp for trans youth, Camp Aranu’tiq, has a heart of gender-neutral gold, and I can only imagine the amount of struggle, defensive conversation and explanation that the organizers have gone through just to get to this point. Well, queer-kudos to the coolest bunch of organized queers I have seen in a long time! From the Aranu’tiq website:

“Our mission is to provide transgender and gender-variant youth with a safe, fun, and unique camp experience during which they are able to express gender however they are comfortable and connect with others in similar situations.

Camp Aranu’tiq is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization. It was born out of the idea that transgender and gender-variant youth needed a safe place to relate to others like them, away from home, in a beautiful rural setting where they can concentrate on what every camper loves: having fun.

Due to the sensitive nature of our program, the exact location of Aranu’tiq can be obtained by interested parents, volunteers, and campers by contacting us.”

Straightspoitation: Pam Ann’s Pretty Funny

April 8, 2008

I was poking around looking for some gay goodies when I stumbled upon Pam Ann, the glamorous, campiferous, drag queen-like alter ego of the comic Caroline Reid. Australian to the max, this “airline hostess” is smart and has assassin style timing when it comes to delivering a line. Watch her at a gay Mardi Gras above and a snippet of her stand up act below.

Like, Oh My God

February 13, 2008

Like seriously, if I got to go to the Rock -n-Roll Camp for Girls as a youth, maybe I would have skipped my embarrassing New Kids On The Block phase (who in case you haven’t already heard, are reuniting!).

But I was such a nerd with my giant dinner plate-sized NKOTB button weighing down my stone-washed, bedazzled jean jacket. The only camp I knew of was Camp La Jolla, a weight-loss camp advertised in the back of YM Magazine.

Rock mentors like Carrie Brownstein and Beth Ditto, shown in the trailer, surely would have rescued me from years of painful shyness, boy and body obsession. Watch the above trailer and tell me you don’t want to jump up and down screaming.
