Yo Majesty Drama

February 20, 2009

Photobucket

It’s not too rare that a band, stewing in the underground for years finally gets some attention and then breaks up. Yo Majesty seems to be going that route, with recent public dramatix for all of us to enjoy. The stories are not yet synced into one press release, but the main thing is, Jwl B went to jail during tour and Shunda K was very vocal about how relieved she was that Jwl B was gone. Jwl B got out of jail, returned to the tour and then Shunda K decided to leave the tour and just do her own solo shows. I was able to catch Yo Majesty a few years back and thought that while Jwl B’s bare-breasted growl added some hot layering, Shunda K’s flow was the heart. Updates on the whole story arc over at Out Hip Hop, in the meantime, Shunda K released a really dam hot solo EP for free, download it here:

TPR Still Hurting Over Office Drama

January 29, 2009

Photobucket

A little while ago, I tossed off some news about Chicago’s best indie-pop band, Office, breaking up. Since then, much has unfolded in the way of she-said-she-said, drama-blah and break-up crap. There was an interesting interview with band leader Scott Masson over at Gaper’s Block, and basically Office lives on. The big “but” is that Office has always been Masson’s project and the band’s building success was taking over the group’s dynamics. Masson let the other band members go and moved to Michigan where he is currently working on the next incarnation of Office. THANK GOD, because this last record, Mecca, is the band’s best. Chiming pianos, strong drums and the best vocal lines Masson has ever written. You can still get it for free but Mecca will soon be available on good ol’ vinyl and itunes. Stay tuned at Masson’s blog for updates. Listen to/download Mecca’s killer opening track below.

Office Broke Up

January 10, 2009

Photobucket

It was just a little while ago that I was looking forward to the next record from Chicago’s cutest, gayest indie-pop band, Office. The hooks were expanding and it seemed like ambition was getting Scott Masson and Co. some much deserved attention. Oh well, as they say, cuz some time over the new year, Office quietly broke up and released their last record for free. Mecca, the final document is available over at Scott’s blog. The supreme Beach Boys/Scissor Sisters sound on the album tells me Mr. Masson won’t be gone for too long.

The Organ’s Final (posthumous) EP

September 30, 2008

Photobucket

The Organ was so great, and I won’t ever be okay with their break up. The combination of Smiths’ guitars and Debbie Harry vocals was just as good as you wanted it to be. OH FUCKING WELL. After one album and breaking up in late 2006, we thought it would be the last we would ever hear from them. BUT on October 14th, the last EP, entitled “Thieves,” will be released by Mint Records. Five songs intended for the 2nd record are collected and packaged for our listening pleasure, if only to think about what could have been. You already know about the members’ new projects, so let’s just decide to be okay for now.
