So many times in my gay life have I wished to live in Canada. Icka Prick & Iron Pussy keeps me updated on the goings on up there, and does so very well. Many posts about sex-work and off the radar shit happening in smarter upper half of North America, and I hope to visit again soon. This week, IP&IP pointed me to this dope interview with Catherine Opie at nomorepotlucks.org, another fierce Canadian queer “journal of politics, arts, and culture.” With NMP’s streamable Dyke on Mykes podcasts, media section dedicated to queer arts and music, NMP is a definitley a resource for queer women. The first issue is up now. Go.
I was over at PLD’s sister blog, Wicked Phobica and found the above text exchange. I was laughing for quite a while, mostly because I hate Lady Ga Ga’s music, and this would be my worst nightmare. Wicked Phobica is an mp3 blog that is also “an ongoing audio-visual playlist aimed at retracing the origins and culture of dance music while connecting the dots between eras.” Read: fierceness, fashion, art, vogue. Would love it if they posted more, but I’ll take the quality.
Anyhow, please remember that if you insist on making requests from a DJ, bless their hard-working hearts, money talks. Last time some guy paid me $10 to play Journey and he got it quick…then when it was a (hot) remix and not the original, he wanted his money back. Ugh. Unless you are at a wedding, you must be nice to your DJ!
If you were lucky enough to catch Kiki & Herb live, then pat yourself on the back cuz it doesn’t look like those crazy old ladies will be back any time soon. Justin Bond has been very busy as himself, with many solo and group shows in NYC and beyond. He is certainly an active facebook friend and now has a blog and a website, justinbond.com. The site is kept updated with a news section, has a merch shop and also promises a new solo album from Justin. Go to the music section and hear a live recording of the new song “The New Depression.” Check out his blog at Justin Bond Is Living and read his intelligent rant on gay marriage.
In case you have been busy with the holiday stress, BUTT Magazine’s blog has been amusing for about a month or so. Looking to be even more informal than their publication, this webzine seems to be the replacement for the much-missed Buttstuff section of the print edition. Readers can submit art, letters, photos, and snow butts. I love this snow butt more than you can think I can. Better than, and not as gross as the butt tea cookies a reader once sent them.
There’s nothing like a little love from some hot women to get your week going. Am I right? Nevermind if it comes in a public letter. The Women on Women Music Program was TPR’s programming neighbor for a couple of years and will be most missed starting next week, when we don’t get to greet them from the studios. It’s okay! They are our buddies and we love them. Keep up with their feminist happenings over at their blog.
My personal fave: Part 19, Being Friends With Their Exes
“After several sessions of negotiating the meaning of “friendship,” the exes will then move on to discuss proper behavior within the newly defined metes and bounds of their “friendship.” Eventually, one of the exes will cross the line, and then they will have to renegotiate and redefine the appropriate boundaries of their “friendship.” Such negotiations can last months or years and will only end when both parties have found new girlfriends.”
Soul Sides, an mp3 blog about various earthy/vintage/obscure music provides quality content for those of you who don’t just need indie rock and electro in their lives. It’s a bold statement to make when you are into the influential more than the stuff that’s still to be determined, especially in this digital age. Kind of grounding, actually, to blogosize the kind of music that has traditionally been preserved only on vinyl, Soul Sides in a nice detour into music that I wouldn’t otherwise be looking for.
John Cameron Mitchell was so taken by the concept of blogging about vintage soul that he posted “Soulful Distractions” a two part slot on Soul Sides. His picks mostly stick to 70′s hits from his life as cool/nerdy kid making out and crushing on girls. Anyway, it’s definitely worth a click or two.
You already know how fabulous Kingdom is. Basically, you’ve been impressed by his skills on the decks and loved his take on a girl group. What else could you want from a hard working homothug? A blog. Don’t grumble, this will serve you well. See, as a music fan, you know how much amazing stuff is out there. I have a genuine passion for earnest indie and electro-house. I also have tongue in cheek likes/dislikes on the R&B and pop fronts that go deep–Top 40 hits are hard to ignore, you know?. About 4 months ago, could you breathe bar-fresh air without hearing those never ending “hey’s” from Rihanna’s tinny throat? No. So Kingdom shares the posting duties with his friend Zachary at Patent Leather Daddy, a site that combs through the charts and gives us the hottest tracks and slickest remixes perfect for your krump and hard style parties. Their passion, our boomboxes, everyone’s party.
And while that may not be in and of itself exciting to you (which it totally should be), most of his posts are about his new movie, Otto; or, Up With Dead People, which is very exciting. It seems to be a gay zombie film, and if you are not already getting too excited for your lap/bed/cubicle, then I don’t know what to tell you. He’s also been commissioning movie posters and going to “Scumdance” with it. Check out the trailer teaser below and go to the site for sample posters and gay updates from LaBruce himself.
Actually, no. It means “get yourself a boyfriend,” or “look for a boyfriend.” But also, it is the name of the coolest blog I’ve found in a while. AND I spend a silly amount of time online: quality time for my boyfriend and I is sitting next to each other with our laptops sharing cool links and sites, so while I’ve already found one a guy pal, I’m still impressed with Búscate. Seemingly based in Spain (sorry, gringos-no English to be had anywhere on the site), there’s a can’t be missed girl-boner for feminism in rock and roll. Plenty of queer highlights, also new and old, famous through way too cool to have been heard of before mp3′s by female fronted punk and pop bands. Can you think of anything that beats that? Didn’t think so. Go here to stream and download a concert by the Ditty Bops on 11/17/07 in California, brought to you by Búscate Un Novio.
