Do The Roach!

Because queer communities can often be segmented and even unwelcoming for groups who don’t fit into strict categories based on gender or sexuality, Formerly Known As-a dance party on Chicago’s north side-has grown in popularity among those who see a benefit to uniting rather than dividing. While most dance parties may be aimed at one particular segment of the LGBT community, FKA aims to make one safe space for them all.
“FKA provides visibility to the otherwise invisible. Its amazing as a trans person to actually go out and be seen as a queer person (which is insanely important to me) versus just some gay/straight dude.” says
FKA regular, Alex Fullerton.
Inspired by Chances Dances and Think Pink’s very own Fruit dance parties, organizers Nako Okubo and Ali McDonald recognized the need for a similarly inclusive party in the Uptown neighborhood’s
ever-popular bar Big Chicks.
Held every first Thursday of the month, the party features DJ Reaganomix with a list of alternating guest DJs, tongue-in-cheek dress codes (Summer Camp, Jocks Vs. Nerds, Holiday Sweaters) and is attended
by a large, energetic crowd of young and old, male, female and everyone in-between. Regulars check FKA’s myspace page to find out the next month’s dress code and to look at pictures from last month’s
party. FKA recently earned Newcity Chicago’s and TimeOut Chicago’s title of “Best Queer Dance Party”.
This week’s party, will celebrate the wonderfully perverted world of John Waters. Along with DJ Reaganomix, special guest Sparkbop will make you shake your tailfeather Hairspray style.
