Stinky’s Best Music of 2009

December 31, 2009

Photobucket

Hmph. 2009. The highs and lows experienced this year are incomparable. If this were a personal blog, I might let you in on a couple of little secrets but NO. Some of the things I made peace with: torrents, need for smart phone, twitter, clutter, my gringo accent while speaking Spanish, and even though I can’t listen to all the music in the world, I can still be a snob about it. Here is my list of the best music I heard in 2009, all of this stuff took me through it and back.

Best Full Length Albums

Photobucket

Kid Sister – Ultraviolet

Finally, a superstar takes being from Chicago and fabulizes it for the masses. The references to my City’s many contributions to dance music are too many to list, Kid Sister does it anchored with a natural talent for accessible and fierce one-liners. If you don’t get it, that’s because you are looking forward to buying your future home in the suburbs for the peace and quiet.

Photobucket

Fagget Fairys–Feed the Horse

This duo of Danish lesbians come out swinging in favor of vag-on-vag sex and marijuana, spitting in various languages over even more varied electronic musical styles. Bollywood to dubstep, house to baile funk, Palms Out Sounds made one hell of a discovery here.

Photobucket

Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

I can’t really expound on this more than anyone else has, except to say that there is not one bad song on the record. Not one.

Photobucket

Micachu & The Shapes – Jewelery

Looking like the poster child for future butches of America, front woman Mica Levi’s first record can’t be messed with. Completely customized instruments and a love for no-wave and folk, Jewelery’s strength forces you to find beauty in chaos–a fine lesson in both life and music.

Photobucket

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – It’s Blitz

The serious snooze that was Show Your Bones didn’t give me high hopes for this. Instead, YYY’s found real heart in their mild side, and created a fantastic new sound for themselves. New wave synths over a charismatic female lead might easily fall into run of the mill pop diva, but the sparkle here has really sharp, serrated edges.

Photobucket

Girls – Album

Wow an earnest white man plays guitar music. Oh man the uniqueness. This record’s saving grace is the plain-spoken mope over triumphant, sunshine-y hooks. The contrast is delicious.

La Roux – S/T

Eleanor Jackson and Ben Langmaid say this project is 50/50 collaboration, and it’s no wonder. The push and pull between the chunky electronics and Jackson’s vocal leads elevate this band head and shoulders above the other Human League biters. Haven’t done this much dance-and-sing-along to a record in a while.

Photobucket

Antony & The Johnsons – The Crying Light

Nothing like a genderless voice cutting your chest up with an angel’s knife to get you up in the morning. A new sophistication in song structure and a confidence in expression allows The Crying Light its many, many heart-string tugs…tugs which happen to come from a giant, pansexual, lightning wielder with freshly moisturized skin.

Photobucket

Metric – Fantasies

Emily Haines could save the planet.

Gossip – Music for Men

I heard rumors about a “backlash” to Gossip’s new stylishness, but I ain’t seen it. Haven’t met a fan who abandoned them after the new glam phase, and why would they? Beth Ditto NEEDS to be a celeb. We’ve all wanted her to be from the beginning, and Music for Men is a hard disco record done right.

Top Ten Songs from Non-Top Ten Albums:

(all these download links hosted by other blogs, can’t say how long they’ll be up)

Best Mix Tapes

Hercules & Love Affair – Sidetracked

The Twelves – The Twelfth Hour

JD Samson – Take Back the Night

Mvscles – Cosmic Thrust

Serious Let Downs:

Grizzly Bear – Veckatemist

If this band’s musical onanism gets any more flagrant, someone should call the authorities. It wasn’t always this way.

Kid Cudi – Man on the Moon (The End of Days)

Really? Take all the hype anyone could ever shit their pants for and sneeze out a whiny, self-important record of new-age rap ballads? All your collaborators sound bored out of their check-cashing brains! Every single one of my bootleg non-album Cudi tracks are better than this crap, never thought a Lady Gaga hook could be a highlight of ANYTHING.

..which brings me to

Lady Gaga

Ugh. I can’t believe we just started this. It feels like it’s been forEVER and a coffee-less day with this woman.

Looking forward to full lengths from:

I’m not able to put together just one list, so here we have my 2007 in 4 categories that best typify my year in music. None are in any kind of order, but it has been so long since I have wanted to memorize every single note, beat and breath on a record–Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black has been kicking my ass since it came out. Run-on sentence about Cut Copy’s So Cosmic DJ Mix:
Cut Copy’s So Cosmic re-contextualizes the Daft Punkification of current electronic music in a heartfelt dance mix that is smooth, subtle and nostalgic while looking forward, thereby providing a beat driven slap in the face to the tech-proficient but ultimately soulless indie-lebrities Justice, MSTRKRFT, and Simian Mobile Disco.

Year In Pink: Noise Friendly Queers Edition

January 1, 2008

Photobucket

The year 2007 brought many ups and downs for the Queer community. This list highlights ten individuals (in no particular order) who made some positive, queer-friendly noise in the media this year.

1) Jerry Sanders: This Republican Mayor of San Diego made some heads turn as he stood up for gay marriage. Mayor Sanders, who admits he has gay friends and a gay daughter, split from his party and heroically stated his support of full marriage rights in a press conference earlier this year.

2) Robert Hanson: The Iowa Judge ruled this year that the Polk County Clerk’s office had to accept applications for marriage from same-sex couples. Though the ruling proved temporary, leaving Iowa marriage laws in limbo, Judge Hanson showed that we have a few friends in the heartland.

3) Dennis Kucinich: One of two presidential candidates that support Gay Marriage, and nothing less. Rep. Kucinich stays continues to stay true to his convictions, even while campaigning. Check out his performance at this year’s LOGO Presidential Forum.

4) Elizabeth Edwards: The wife of presidential candidate, John Edwards, came out this year in support of full marriage rights for gay and lesbian individuals. While admitting her husband is wrong on the issue, she continued to stand up for gay rights, even in the face of the everyone’s favorite, Ann Coulter.

5) Susan Stanton: The former city manager of Largo was fired from her position (then as Steve Stanton) because of her pursuit of sex reassignment surgery and her coming out as a transgender individual.

6) J.K. Rowling: Though the outing of Hogwarts Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, shook up the literary world and angered a lot of conservative media personalities, Rowling remained steadfast in her affirmation that the beloved character is gay.

7) and 8 ) David Shepherd and Travis Price: Two Canadian 12th graders stood up for a 9th grader who had been bullied for wearing a pink shirt. The two boys bought over 50 pink t-shirts and started a campaign to prove that anyone can wear pink , and that bullying is so 10 years ago.

9) Nikolai Alexeyev: After 2 consecutive years of violence at Russian Gay Pride events, this queer continues to push for equality in his country. Nikolai came to Chicago earlier this year with his message and provided a great interview with our friends at Feast of Fools.

10) Darren Manzella: This Army medic brought a bit of controversy by challenging the current DADT policy of the military. Darren courageously came out to his commanding officer and shared his story with CBS NEWS.

Year in Pink: Out at The Movies Edition

December 29, 2007

Photobucket

This year, gay men and women moved me with their terrific work in front of and behind the camera, even if that work was simply telling their own stories. If anything, this top ten list is a celebration of the incredible diversity of talents, tastes and lives in our community.

1. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (dir. Tim Burton): Stephen Sondheim’s gorgeous music and lyrics unite with Burton’s beautiful imagery to tell a terrifying, bloody and emotionally wrenching tale.

2. I’m Not There (dir. Todd Haynes): The director of Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine and Poison twists the biopic genre inside out with his tribute to the chameleon-like Bob Dylan, played by six different actors. Cate Blanchett is the most memorable.

3. The Bible Tells Me So (dir. Daniel G. Karslake): Gay men and women share their stories about how Christianity and coming out impacted their relationships with family members. Some stories are heart-warming, others are painful, but all are authentic.

4. The Bubble (dir. Eytan Fox): An uncompromising look at complications that arise when an Israeli man and a Palestinian man fall in love in Tel Aviv. The film-maker behind Yossi & Jagger (2002) and Walk on Water (2004), Fox just gets better and better.

5. Small Town Gay Bar (dir. Malcolm Ingram): Ingram brings his camera home to visit gay bars in the Deep South. Living in places that are notoriously hostile towards homosexuality, these men and women share a sense of community lacking in big cities.

6. The Life of Reilly (dir. Frank L. Anderson, Barry Poltermann): Charles Nelson Reilly, veteran actor and fixture on game and talk shows in the 1970s and 80s, tells his life story with generous humor and undeniable sorrow. There is more to him than Match Game.

7. ShowBusiness: The Road to Broadway (dir. Dori Berinstein): Four musicals (Avenue Q, Caroline or Change, Taboo, and Wicked ) vie for the Tony Award in the 2003-2004 Broadway season. If you didn’t know, many gays are involved in the theater world.

8. Hairspray (dir. Adam Shankman): John Waters is a friendly flasher in a film adapted from the musical adapted from his own 1988 film. Ostensibly about racial integration of television shows in the 1960s, the film is pure fun, notwithstanding John Travolta.

9. Wrestling with Angels: Playwright Tony Kushner (dir. Freida Lee Mock): A profile of the scribe behind Angels In America. It covers such milestones as his 2001 play, Homebody/Kabul, his marriage to Mark Harris, and his work for John Kerry’s campaign.

10. Gray Matters (dir. Sue Kramer): Flawed romantic comedy that is perhaps the antithesis of Go Fish (1994), but sweet and funny. Gray (Heather Graham) likes women but is a dork about finding love. Alan Cumming and Molly Shannon try to help her.
