Comps Pay For Gay

Lots of fuss in early ’09 about a couple of different compilations–with hot collaborations, enlightening cover tracks and good causes, these discs are worth your time and cash. Dark Was The Night, put out by the beloved 4AD records, and is “thirty-two exclusive tracks have been recorded for the compilation, which will be available as a double cd, triple vinyl and download album, with profits benefiting the Red Hot Organization – an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS. Heroes, put out by Astralworks, benefits War Child which “helps kids stranded in war zones across the world. Heroes has a pretty simple and great concept: Music legends pick the songs of theirs they want to hear covered and the younger artists they want to have cover their songs.” Sample some of the tracks below and get yourself to an indie shop and buy some shit!
(From Heroes)
Scissor Sisters – Do The Strand (Roxy Music Cover)
(From Dark Was The Night)
Grizzly Bear – Deep Blue Sea
Antony with Brice Dressner – I Was Young When I Left Home

An Actual Shot of Love
March 7, 2008
As you might know, Roller Derby has made a huge comeback. Tough girls with spiky elbows have found a place to co-miz and kick some ass. The Windy City Rollers have been a Chicago staple for a couple of years now, and it was big news when member Tequila Mockingbird was injured during a game, suffering a spinal injury. Like most Americans, medical insurance has forsaken her, and the community has stepped up to help. A benefit has been planned for this Saturday, February 8th: To Thrill a Mockingbird.
The fun begins at 7pm with a social hour featuring appetizers donated by Charlie’s Ale House, a Best Decorated Helmet Contest with prizes and a chance to mix and mingle with members of the Windy City Rollers. You’ll also have a chance to get derby merch, tickets for the bout on Sunday and enter a special raffle to benefit Tequila Mockingbird! Don’t miss the action when the Dyke Delicious Film Series at Chicago Filmmakers screens the 70′s Cult Classic: “Kansas City Bomber” and “High Heels on Wheels.” $10 at Chicago Filmmakers 5243 N Clark St Chicago, (773) 293-1447.
T’s, Sweet Occasions, Ranalli’s, Starbucks Coffee, Kopi Cafe Chicago, Women and Children First and Alamo Shoes have all donated gift certificates! One of a kind, hand made, derby themed underwear for our silent auction, and gift packages donated by the fierce and fabulous ladies of BOTH Tulip and Early to Bed!!!
After words, all ticket holders will be given 2 drinks for the price of one when they present their ticket stub at Charlie’s Ale House, they’ll have other drink specials and the ladies of the Windy City Rollers will be serving up shots! DJ Sky will be laying down the best in punk, funk, old school and indie to make you shake that booty… ALL TO BENEFIT TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD! Charlie’s Ale House is located at 5308 N. Clark (Across the Street form Chicago Film Makers)
