Photobucket

The Atomic Sketch Event is a monthly live art event hosted by Brian Hofmeister, Dominic Cesario and Charles Joly. The event takes place in Wicker Park, at Evil Olive, 1551 W. Division Avenue.

Atomic Sketch is a great event for both artists and art enthusiasts. The event consists of a panel of artists sketching throughout the night and they’ll offer works created for sale to patrons. There is a featured artist who will have a more formal show of artwork to be on display through the following month at Evil Olive. Artists are always welcome to come and sketch and sell even if they’re not on the panel. Just find a place to work and you’re all set.

12/09 Critical Fierceness Grant Awardees

January 28, 2010

The awardees for the recent cycle of the Critical Fierceness grant have been announced, and quite immediately an inspired pause overtook TPR headquarters. Riva Lehrer’s cerebral process translates fully into her work–her portraits are usually the result of interviews with her subjects or deep introspection. A focus on the body and its changes in physical ability give way to an examination of limitations and empowerment presented as a see-through mirror; these drawings are as much reflection as projection. Of the two awardees, Edie Fake has been featured on TPR before – his blunt palette is far more nuanced than his primary school style suggests–the ideas are declarative, if not quite shocking. I’m excited about his map of Chicago, surely it’ll have its fair share of judgemental humor, chunky psychedelia and gay-as-fuck camaraderie.

*Edie Fake – Fists of Fury

Grant Winner: Edie Fake

Proposed Project:  An experimental map of queer Chicago history (Illustrated Scroll)

Edie Fake’s ambitious, amorous project, is to research, design and print a conceptual
queer heritage “map” specific to Chicago, taking the form of a long scroll-like drawing of imagery and notes.
Some of Edie’s previous drawing work can be found at your local underground comic store, where his comic series
Gaylord Phoenix continues to win hearts and minds across the U.S. http://ediefake.com/

*Riva Lehrer – Zora: How I Understand

Grant Winner: Riva Lehrer

Proposed Project: A portrait of Alison Bechdel for Lehrer’s series, “Totems and Familiars” (Large-Scale Charcoal Drawing)

Riva Lehrer’s recent series, Totems and Familiars, explores how people use metaphors to transcend their own limitations
and re-imagine the self. Her paintings and drawings often focuses on subjects who, like herself, take a claim to both
queer and disabled communities, radicalizing the notion of which bodies are seen. Riva will complete a portrait of
queer graphic novelist Alison Bechdel (Dykes to Watch Out For, Funhome) for this series. http://rivalehrer.com/

How Fucking Romantic

I’m literally jumping out of my space-heater safety zone with this link. How Fucking Romantic is a blog that collects writers and comic artists to illustrate each of the songs on The Magnetic Fields’s 69 Love Songs. Must be Magnetic Fields day! It’s looking like the project has only been going on since April 2009, but 2/3rds of Stephin Merritt’s magnum opus has already been claimed. If you are a visual artist and want to contribute, go and leave a comment (there is a degree of squirelliness about their contact information). This blog gets the TOO FUCKING CUTE stamp from TPR.

Sissy Dude’s Down

September 15, 2009

Photobucket

Not sure, but it looks like Sissy Dude is a victim of the random Google homophobia that sometimes bestrickens porny blogs. It sucks, and usually there is no getting it back. For now, I’m sure John Webster is scrambling to retrieve his archives and John, if you are looking for suggestions, I’d try WordPress. All of you thirsty for Webster’s signature art without the furry cracks can check for updates at his art blog the John Webster Book or at his home decor blog, Kitch’n.

In Depth: The Critical Fierceness Grant

* Latham and Mel

The Critical Fierceness Grant is a twice-yearly microgrant awarded to a queer artist, funded by the money Chances Dances makes through its dance parties. Tonight, the 2nd winner of the Critical Fierceness Grant will be announced at their oldest haunt, Subterranean.  I’m so happy that the organizers have been able to make good on their promise and nurture the artistic queers in Chicago with this opportunity and I’ll be profiling the winner this week, so stay tuned for that. Before that exciting announcement, I’ve got an interview with 2 reps from Chances, Latham Zearfoss and Mel Racho. They graciously answered some questions I sent them about the grant, Chicago and its invaluable queers. Here are some quotes, (Mel is in BLUE and Latham is in GREEN, just cuz) read the full interviews after the jump.

…we still wanted to provide a venue for queer expression, formerly manifested in our themes, contests and channeled through our amazing former host Miss Teena Angst. Simultaneously we received an increase in the percentage of bar sales from the Subterranean, so suddenly we had this conundrum of how to spend the money now that we’d called it quits on theme nights (not a finite thing, just a general shift), while also re-negotiating Chances’ role as a creative outlet for the community. The Critical Fierceness Grant answered all of these problems while being an exciting endeavor for all of us…

…the Crit Fierceness works is perhaps what makes it stand out from other micro-grants that I am aware of (also sit on the city’s CAAP media panel), is the level of trust and connection we have with the artist and their work. The grant application process is comprehensive and finalists go through an outside board for review. Yet, at the day’s end, it is really cash money for the queer artist: here is money, get your work done, we believe in you and the project. This kind of faith is rare in most things that involve money – and, let’s face it increasingly rare in this world…

Proun — Watchoo Know About Proun?!

June 2, 2009

Photobucket

That will change sooner than later, don’t worry. For now, Proun is a two cutie gays that distribute indie media out of their Rogers Park apartment and I bought an indie, urine-themed queer magazine from them at the CHIRP Record Fair.  The date and location aren’t  set, but for the last several months they have been scouting Chicago’s neighborhoods for a retail space. Not only will it house their impeccably curated magazines, music, books and art, but will also serve as a space for openings and performance. Their table at the CHIRP Record Fair had some of the illest, hottest, obscurest queer print mags I have ever seen, they are going to change Chicago’s indie media landscape, guaranteed. I’ll keep you posted, but if you know of any store front leads, shoot them an email at mailinglist((@))proun.us. Until then, run over to the site and check out the cool vids they have where you can cyber-flip through their magazine, look through their mail order catalogue, and if YOU have indie zines, arts, poetry and misc-crafts, ask them about their consignment stock and SELL YOUR SHIT!

Throbbing Gristle This Weekend!

April 20, 2009

Even for the most daringly liberal thinker and lover of art, the story arch of Genesis P-Orridge and Throbbing Gristle can be confusing. Beyond that, the music can be really challenging to listen to and if the recent batch of shows is any indication, the sound hasn’t changed much since the 70′s. Check out the difference between the two vids above, one from a show in their early days, and another from the other week in NYC. What has changed most is Genesis P-Orridge–at least on the outside. The impact of such a transformation with the art world watching cannot be underestimated; the pandrogyny and the constant use of a plural pronoun make it a unique, if not a hard, sell. Genesis would not be as important if they weren’t so damn smart and well spoken, though. There is a recent interview over at Rock and Roll Dating that illustrates my point. That, and the fact that Throbbing Gristle never toured the U.S. in when they started, make these recent shows that much more significant. Throbbing Gristle are playing four shows this Saturday and Sunday at the Logan Square Auditorium and Epiphany Church, as of this writing there are still tickets for Sunday.

S & Mart

April 9, 2009

Photobucket

IML. Say it with me, folks. Nothing does Spring in Chicago like International Mr. Leather, and every year I get more and more excited. Memorial Day weekend in Chicago is the another gay holiday to me, the far superior Pride for so many reasons. What is better than tens of thousands of Leather Daddies descending upon us for a raunchy weekend, taking over the Loop and an unsuspecting public? Nothing. At all. You just can’t beat a Walgreens filled with fetishists, and when the guy in the full blue leather sailor suit asks for some wintermint gum and lip balm in a super nelly voice, I know why I live in the best city on earth…it’s home!

Anyhow, this year the Leather Archives & Museum is hoping to expand the horizons of the event by staging performance and displaying art at the Leather Market (if you don’t know what the market is, picture a craft fair but all the “crafts” will make you blush). From the LA&M press release:

S&Mart consists of two parts, an Opening Night Art Show/Auction and a Demo Stage Market Show. The Art show will be held at the Hilton – Chicago and is open to the event’s local and international audience. Works will be on display and available for sale as part of a silent auction with a percentage of the proceeds returning to the artist. The Demo Market Show will consist of a group of 5 to 7 performers or performance groups and will be scheduled as acts between scheduled Fetish Demonstrations.

If you are interested in showing or performing fetish/leather related art at this year’s IML, contact Scott Ian Ray at gagallery((@))leatherarchives.org
