The Ballet have been busy with their schooling and writing new songs and I’ve been waiting patiently for a follow up to their brilliant, understated 1st album, Mattachine. Not only was it beautifully packaged, but also it had the right balance of Magnetic Fields by-way-of-Belle and Sebastian with a dash of early R.E.M. They have a couple of new songs streaming at their myspace, including the pretty “Dangerous” and “Great Expectations.” The posted video is a nice capsule of their cuteness, live at a local Brooklyn hipster park. If you recognize the boy with the maracas, it’s because he was in the late/great Chicago band Princess, and now he also plays in The Aisler’s Set, The Ladybug Transistor, and Dead Radar. A band slut, yes you are Michael. Order their music, write them, encourage them and get gay with the Ballet.

Looking for LTR: Ex-Boyfriends

December 17, 2007

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

December has seen some last minute releases of music and film that will now doubt be clamoring for space on top-ten lists everywhere. San Francisco’s Ex-Boyfriends bring a Killers/Promise Ring inspired sound to their urgent boy-rock. With Chris Garneau, The Hidden Cameras, and Xiu Xiu also on their roster, Absolutely Kosher Records has shown a flair for signing sensitive gay boys behind instruments, Ex-Boyfriends brings the most traditional rock structure of that bunch. Their 2nd record In With came out on December 4th and we should be able to expect a tour soon enough.

Peaches Still Ripe

December 2, 2007

It’s been a while, her DJ sets are just trashy enough to keep me sated but I miss Peaches. She just makes me laugh. Artists whose strength is their hook-up ready singles are nothing new, so you haters can just halt right there. “Downtown,” “Boys Wanna Be Her,” and “Stick It To The Pimp” from Impeach My Bush were all bangers, remixed and danced-to across the world. Plus, she’s a prominently political rocker that’s never afraid to put her money on what she shoves her mouth over. To my delight, there is some momentum building at camp rump- I got an email just to let me the know the XXXtress will be touring as a DJ next spring, there’s a sale for merch at peachesrocks.com, we can expect a new LP in fall ’08 AND she just remixed Tone Loc’s Wild Thing. Good enough. A trip, skip and lick on my keyboard and I also found a hysterical collaboration with underground queer icons Scream Club. “Fine as Fuck,” a song where the ridiculous hook is only out shined by Cindy Wonderful’s deft pillow talk.

Scream Club Vs. Ben Adorable–Fine As Fuck Feat. Peaches

Daft Punk–Technologic (Peaches No Logic Remix)

Bonde Do Role–Marina Gasolina (Peaches Remix)

Tone Loc–Wild Thing (Peaches Remix)

Monster beherrschen diesen Planet (with Peaches)–Die Goldenen Zitronen

Infadels–Prince vs. Peaches

Magnetic Fields ‘Distortion’ Gaining Clarity

November 30, 2007

Hm. Okay. The first song and the album cover are not overwhelming me with holy shitness. BUT having created probably the best concept album ever and a body of work that will be cherished for generations to come, I’m still excited about the new Magnetic Fields album, Distortion, out 1/15/08 on Nonesuch. Preliminary interviews have Stephin Merritt saying they used piano feedback on every song. They are calling their live shows this spring “residencies” and not a proper tour. Six shows in Chicago at the Old Town School is generous, and by the time the shows were announced in our free weekly, there were barely any tickets left. Tracklist and tourdates below, as well as the new song “Three-way” and a live cover of “Born On a Train” by the Arcade Fire.

Distortions Tracklist:

Behind Every Good Girl Band, There’s a Hot Homothug

Palms Out Sounds, always one of the best places to find the hottest floor-creaming tracks, is getting ready to break out in a major way. 2008 is literally the future as a record label, an expanded contributors list and cutting edge look and feel will give Palms Out first dibs on answering many questions about what the hell is happening to the music industry. With their first 12″ by Danish lesbian duo Fagget Fairys available for pre-order, we have the paradox of an Mp3 blog selling hard copies of music. I’m SO there.

This week, Palms Out clued me into the cock friendly mind of DJ, Producer, homothug and now svengali Kingdom–an attractive Brooklynite making his first splish-splashes in the music mogul hot tub. A slammin’ mixtape on the myspace, regular gigging and now a girl group Michelle–a Crime Mob-ish crew of divas ready to give hipster rap circles a new spin. Mp3′s and a link to his mixtape below, and while I couldn’t find the tracklist, R&B, house, thugrave, and old school hip hop are present in a fine 55 minute balance perfect for parties with tallboys and booties.

Kingdom–Buckn’ Ft. Sr. Palm (Radio Edit)

Keyshia Cole–Let it Go (Kingdom’s 909 Remix)

Rhythm King And Her Friends

November 25, 2007

Rhythm King And Her Friends released their second record in September via Kitty Yo. Still waiting for some kind of U.S. distribution, their music has been worth it to me even though overseas shipping ain’t cheap. Front of Luxury is more slick minimal beats, strong synths and enough guitar to make this duo more than just another dance band. Their charming accent, songs in French and tasteful use of , uh, rhythm is shaking lesbians out of their trees in Europe (the band is based in Berlin and Paris) but I’m still waiting for a U.S. tour. Write them and tell them how much you love them, maybe they’ll come over here already. Mp3′s and new video below. If you are not a stickler for vinyl, you can buy their music in high quality mp3 form at BoomKat.

Deerhunter The Movie Way Longer Than Deerhunter the Band’s Career

November 24, 2007

* Bradford Cox

Just announced via the band’s blog, Deerhunter will be on hiatus after their current tour. Pitchfork has been suckling on their teet since Cryptograms, a pop record awash in calm, arty waters. Singer Bradford Cox’s solo project Atlas Sound will have full-time status now, and his off the cuff recording will be polished with the release of the full length Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel (Kranky Records) on February 19th. Judging from the site, Cox has made a habit of posting Atlas Sound songs right after he recorded them on tour, on the bus, at the venue, sometimes reposting them later with corrections. It’s interesting to note that the singer has been a little squirrely about his sexual orientation in interviews, but on stage with the band, he’ll rant about it and lip sync like a drag diva all the while donning a sleeveless, sparkley dress. Hopefully his lonesome foray into the biz will get whatever’s deep in there out and on the vinyl plate. So far Atlas Sound is a hazy, lazy river of soft, layered strumming and reverb. Pretty stuff. After the sturm und drang of the corporate media machine, Portland’s Gossip are quietly posting new music on their myspace. Singer Beth Ditto has been giving me the chills- the boldest cover girl, video diva and mouthy front woman has lead her band to indie stardom. I would have never thought a pro-fat, tranny chasing punk could get so much mainstream attention. Props. Lucky us, as we wait for a new record there have been countless remixes and never ending tours. Run over and have a listen at their new songs 8th Wonder, Spare Me From the Mold and Heavy Kross, and don’t be afraid to give them some feedback. They are still small enough to get your note, and their recent success might require some humbling. Also, here are some remixes and mashups you might have heard already…

A Plus D–Gossip vs. Elastica

Eve Massacre–Gossip vs. Loverboy

Kitsune Maison–Gossip vs. Dangerous Dan vs. Nicky Van She (Gossip Around the World)

Gossip–Yr Mangled Heart (Linus Loves Remix)

Gossip–Jealous Girls (Tommie Sunshine Remix)

Gossip–Jealous Girls (NYPC Remix)

Tender Forever Still…

November 18, 2007

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

December 4th will see the release of a new Tender Forever record entitled Wider on K Records. Melanie Valera continues her solo explorations of vocal layers, concrete images and forlorn sentiment with a bedroom aesthetic perfect for the mid-alphabet imprint. This short song quickly builds to a chorus and somehow, when she mentions “meeting after sound check” and “songs by the Slits,” you know those lines mean more to her just the words on paper. Fans of the Blow’s early, almost demo-quality sound will take heart that there’s someone else we can listen to while she’s developing a musical point of view. If “I liked their early stuff better” is something you say a lot, here’s another opportunity.
