Stinky’s Best Music of 2009

December 31, 2009

Photobucket

Hmph. 2009. The highs and lows experienced this year are incomparable. If this were a personal blog, I might let you in on a couple of little secrets but NO. Some of the things I made peace with: torrents, need for smart phone, twitter, clutter, my gringo accent while speaking Spanish, and even though I can’t listen to all the music in the world, I can still be a snob about it. Here is my list of the best music I heard in 2009, all of this stuff took me through it and back.

Best Full Length Albums

Photobucket

Kid Sister – Ultraviolet

Finally, a superstar takes being from Chicago and fabulizes it for the masses. The references to my City’s many contributions to dance music are too many to list, Kid Sister does it anchored with a natural talent for accessible and fierce one-liners. If you don’t get it, that’s because you are looking forward to buying your future home in the suburbs for the peace and quiet.

Photobucket

Fagget Fairys–Feed the Horse

This duo of Danish lesbians come out swinging in favor of vag-on-vag sex and marijuana, spitting in various languages over even more varied electronic musical styles. Bollywood to dubstep, house to baile funk, Palms Out Sounds made one hell of a discovery here.

Photobucket

Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

I can’t really expound on this more than anyone else has, except to say that there is not one bad song on the record. Not one.

Photobucket

Micachu & The Shapes – Jewelery

Looking like the poster child for future butches of America, front woman Mica Levi’s first record can’t be messed with. Completely customized instruments and a love for no-wave and folk, Jewelery’s strength forces you to find beauty in chaos–a fine lesson in both life and music.

Photobucket

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – It’s Blitz

The serious snooze that was Show Your Bones didn’t give me high hopes for this. Instead, YYY’s found real heart in their mild side, and created a fantastic new sound for themselves. New wave synths over a charismatic female lead might easily fall into run of the mill pop diva, but the sparkle here has really sharp, serrated edges.

Photobucket

Girls – Album

Wow an earnest white man plays guitar music. Oh man the uniqueness. This record’s saving grace is the plain-spoken mope over triumphant, sunshine-y hooks. The contrast is delicious.

La Roux – S/T

Eleanor Jackson and Ben Langmaid say this project is 50/50 collaboration, and it’s no wonder. The push and pull between the chunky electronics and Jackson’s vocal leads elevate this band head and shoulders above the other Human League biters. Haven’t done this much dance-and-sing-along to a record in a while.

Photobucket

Antony & The Johnsons – The Crying Light

Nothing like a genderless voice cutting your chest up with an angel’s knife to get you up in the morning. A new sophistication in song structure and a confidence in expression allows The Crying Light its many, many heart-string tugs…tugs which happen to come from a giant, pansexual, lightning wielder with freshly moisturized skin.

Photobucket

Metric – Fantasies

Emily Haines could save the planet.

Photobucket

Gossip – Music for Men

I heard rumors about a “backlash” to Gossip’s new stylishness, but I ain’t seen it. Haven’t met a fan who abandoned them after the new glam phase, and why would they? Beth Ditto NEEDS to be a celeb. We’ve all wanted her to be from the beginning, and Music for Men is a hard disco record done right.

Best Mix Tapes

Hercules & Love Affair – Sidetracked

The Twelves – The Twelfth Hour

JD Samson – Take Back the Night

Mvscles – Cosmic Thrust

Serious Let Downs:

Grizzly Bear – Veckatemist

If this band’s musical onanism gets any more flagrant, someone should call the authorities. It wasn’t always this way.

Kid Cudi – Man on the Moon (The End of Days)

Really? Take all the hype anyone could ever shit their pants for and sneeze out a whiny, self-important record of new-age rap ballads? All your collaborators sound bored out of their check-cashing brains! Every single one of my bootleg non-album Cudi tracks are better than this crap, never thought a Lady Gaga hook could be a highlight of ANYTHING.

..which brings me to

Lady Gaga

Ugh. I can’t believe we just started this. It feels like it’s been forEVER and a coffee-less day with this woman.

Looking forward to full lengths from:
Duck Sauce
Beach House
RYE RYE

Mary Ralph’s Top Ten Reflections on Being Suddenly Disabled

December 30, 2009

Photobucket

Mary Ralph plays guitar and sings in Chicago’s Scotland Yard Gospel Choir.

On September 24th, my band was in a horrific van accident. We all survived, but some of us were left with injuries which have greatly affected our lives. After spending time with a wheelchair and a walker, I left the hospital & have spent the past two months walking with a cane.

1. My relationship with my body has changed completely. When I was in the hospital, I found myself watching footage of BMX bikers & NBA basketball games, & cursing myself for spending so much of my spring & summer indoors.

2. People are always going to stare. I’ve found myself marveling that there was a time when I could disappear in a crowd & become invisible.

3. Strangers often ask what happened or offer a “feel better!” I always think how different, how inappropriate, that question would be if I was not going to recover from my injuries or if any of my bandmates had not survived.

4. People are often self-absorbed. I can’t count the number of times people have bumped into me, let doors slam on me, or not slowed their vehicles as I made my way through a crosswalk. It is a minor thing, but so infuriating when you are just struggling to live your life as you once did.

5. Strangers also have the power to make your day. I remember the first concert I went to after the accident, the waitress at Lincoln Hall was amazing. Without making me feel awkward, she checked on me every time she passed by my seat. When everything in the world feels like a challenge, sometimes an unexpected ally can change everything.

6. My college mentor was in a car accident when she was young that left her face disfigured. I remember her explaining her aversion to pictures by saying it wasn’t her face — her face had been changed by a steering wheel and then a plastic surgeon. I came out of this remarkably unscathed, but something as little as chipped front teeth has caused me to do double takes whenever I’m in front of a mirror.

7. It’s very frustrating sometimes, this whole experience. In my weaker moments, I find myself thinking how unfair it is to be carrying all this emotional baggage related to the crash, things that other people couldn’t possibly understand; and it is my job to excuse all the boneheaded shit people say to me because, hey, they couldn’t possibly understand.

8. Always wear your seat belt.

9. Everyone needs & deserves health care. I am one of the extraordinarily lucky people who has employer-provided health insurance. I simply cannot explain how much it has meant to me that I have spent the past three months focusing on my recovery, not fearing an ever increasing debt. Everyone deserves that. No one in America should go broke as they are fighting to survive.

10. I am very lucky. I flew out of a moving vehicle and I survived. I think about that everyday of my life. This has been the most difficult experience I’ve faced, but I know it could have been so much worse. I am so very lucky to have my band mates with me. We have been blessed with the most supportive families, friends, and music community. That’s what kept me going in those first few days. Thank you.

For more information or to give to the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir Recovery Fund, please visit http://www.bloodshotrecords.com/news/sygc-van-accident.

[I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Mary for taking the time to reflect and make this very personal list. My friends in SYGC are near and dear to my heart, Chicago is a better place because of them. While Mary is insured medically, some of the other band members are not, and aside from those costs there is also the issue of gear replacement and income loss. Amy Nicole Miller’s Best in Queer Pop Culture for 2009

December 29, 2009

Photobucket

Amy Nicole Miller is a pop-culture blogger and Editor for VelvetPark as well as a Chicago-based performance artist. You may know her by such characters as Magic Madge or Lez BoBo the Clown. She also has a very gay day job as a Research Associate at Howard Brown Health Center.

10) Carrie Prejean. I’d like to thank Carrie Prejean for coining my favorite term of 2009- “Opposite Marriage.” Miss California somehow managed to make a beauty pageant even more offensive than it already was. The unfortunate part is that next year, more people will probably tune in to Miss USA than ever before. Lucky for us, CP is still making a fool of herself (did you see her threaten to walk out on Larry King?) and hopefully will entertain us well into 2010.

9) Rachel Maddow. I know, it’s so predictable for a lezbian to put Rachel Maddow on a top 10 list. I’m the first in line to complain about MSNBC trying to downplay Rachel’s butchness with those plunging necklines and eye-shadow. All that aside, Rachel was on fire with her intense interviews this year. My favorite was this one with Richard Cohen:

“I realize I was taking the risk of helping promote you and the way that you think about these things but putting you on the air. But I do think that you’ve actually got blood on your hands.” Rachel Maddow to Richard Cohen

Photobucket

8) Beth Ditto became really famous. When did Beth blow up? I guess this year she was more famous than ever. She’s in British tabloids- what? Gossip plays ginormous sold-out outdoor music festivals in Europe and everyone sings along- even to songs from Standing in the Way of Control- come again? They play on late-night American TV shows- what the…? It’s weird. But never fear- Beth is no sell-out; She’s bringing the queer to the mainstream, not losing site of her punk DIY roots. Still a fat femme activist, she launched a plus-size clothing line for Evans and posed nude for Love Magazine. If you asked me 5 years ago who I’d most like to see get famous it would be her.

7) Lil’ Mama. We saw a different side of Lil’ Mama this year. How disappointing was it when she made those transphobic comments on America’s Best Dance Crew? I used to love her, but when she tried to school Naomi on how to be a “real” lady, I cried. So Lil’ Mama should be on the Worst of 2009 list, except that she jumped onstage uninvited during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ performance at the VMAs. She went back to “good crazy” and I love her for giving us one of the most awkward moments of the year. It was actually painful to watch.

Photobucket

6) The end of the L-Word. Praise the Lord Jesus Christ and all his saviors that this tragedy of a show has ended. No more Jenny Schecter, TiBette, Shane haircuts, or awful stereotyped characters (Max, Kit.) I celebrated with a bang by watching the finale at Stargaze and almost getting into a fist-fight with an annoying lesbian- couldn’t have been more appropriate.

Photobucket

5) Gays saving the sitcom. I thought that reality TV had finally pushed scripted TV off the cliff. But it’s back on top with two of the funniest and not coincidentally gayest (because gay people are way funnier than straights) sitcoms ever: Glee and Modern Family. Let’s start with Glee: Glee Club automatically equals gay. To make matters better, you got Kurt leading the football players in a dance to Single Ladies on the field. IMO, the true star of the show is Jane Lynch in her best role yet: evil cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester. Next up: Modern Family, my new favorite show of all time. It has three hilarious gay characters: Manny- and really, there’s nothing more adorable than a witty gay kid and the gay couple Mitchell and Cameron who dress up their baby as different divas for photo shoots. G.A.Y!

4) Kathy Griffin. The dick joke heard ’round the world was the first major pop-culture moment of 2009. I’m actually not sure if it happened before or after midnight, but it was discussed on New Year’s day, so I’ll count it. While co-hosting CNN’s Live New Year’s Eve Special with Anderson Cooper, Kathy was heckled by someone off-camera and she replied “I don’t go to your job and knock the dicks out of your mouth” before CNN had a chance to bleep it. It was a huge year for Kathy in general. The 5th season of My Life on the D-List was gayer than gay with guest stars Lily Tomlin, Bette Midler, Betty White, Rosie O’Donnell and Melissa Ethridge- just to name a few. The episode “Norma Gay” showcased what a true advocate she is for equal marriage rights. She was nominated for a Grammy and came out with a memoir – “Official Book Club Selection” which is not only hilarious but touching. She opens up about her early struggles with her career, plastic surgeries and her family.

3) Video of Perez Hilton crying about being punched by will.i.am. The first time I watched this video was the hardest I’ve laughed all year. He’s a Drama Queen with a capital DQ and either he is ridiculously paranoid (he thought the Black Eyed Peas’ “people” followed him to his hotel, a hotel where they also happened to be staying) or working on a career as an actor. If there were an Academy Award for most dramatic viral video performance (perhaps there should be,) this would win.

2) Wanda Sykes. Her performance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was legendary. Not only was she the first African-American woman and first openly-gay person to ever perform at the event, she also killed. I love that she didn’t change her brand of humor and sparked mega-controversy. Her second HBO stand-up Special, “I’ma Be Me” was one of the best stand-ups I’ve ever seen. She talks about her performance at the WHCD, having a gut with it’s own mind and what it’s like to be on a gay cruise. Watch it now. Rare for a woman, even in this day and age, Wanda scored her own late night show, The Wanda Sykes Show on FOX. She’s a face of the equal-marriage movement and a strong supporter of gay rights all-around. Remember the PSA she did about how it’s not cool to call something “gay?”

1) The return of Pee-Wee Herman! In fact, this could easily be the best moment of the decade. As a Pee-Wee obsessed fan, this is a dream come true. The Pee-Wee Herman Show, in it’s original adult-oriented stage show format is returning with most of the original cast. He’s been doing the talk-show circuit and seeing him again is like reuniting with a lost lover. Look for me in 2010 when the show tours the rest of the country (Presently, it’s only scheduled run is in LA) and I’m chosen as the newest cast member- Lez Bo-Bo the Clown!

Kitten LeFemme’s Top Ten Sex Blogs for 2009

December 29, 2009

Photobucket

Kitten LeFemme is a sex writer and educator living in Chicago.  She has written for UR Chicago, Poolboy magazine and is a weekly
contributor to lovelulumae.blogspot.com.

A list of my favorite sex blogs and why, in 2009, they were hotter than ever.

1) www.sugarbutch.net

Sinclair Smith has created a truly unique and truly sexy blog.   A combination of gender politics, philosophy, queer theory and smut make up the content of this hot butch’s site.  Smith writes about her real life experiences and in 2009 she started dating her girlfriend, and her lucky readers have gotten to read all about their naughty exploits as they explore their butch/femme and BDSM influenced relationship.

2) www.unspeakableaxe.com

Axe is a submissive, straight man living in New York City.  He breaks through stereotypes surrounding what it means to be straight, masculine guy and writes about his longing to do chores for and serve his lady partners.  In 2008 and early 2009, Axe was searching for a partner and his blog left the sexy and entered the sad.  Six months ago, he met the lady of his dreams and his content went from interesting to sexy to really fucking hot (literally. She put a pepper in his cock).

3) http://belledejour-uk.blogspot.com/

Belle’s blog made news earlier in the decade, when she began writing about her day to day life as an escort in the United Kingdom.  The blog led to a book, Diary of an Unlikely Call Girl, which led to a television series, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, and the blog had a long lull.  Belle has long since ceased working as an escort, but her blog was bigger than ever in the later part of 2009 because she decided to no longer be anonymous and came out to the British press as an accomplished scientific researcher.  Belle’s posts about her clients are funny and sexy but the guts that it took to come out, deal with the subsequent press frenzy and dispel myths about sex workers is really hot.

4) http://deviantdyke.blogspot.com

Author DeDe Delynn combines photos with her beautiful writing to create erotica that is as luscious as the sex she is writing about.  Her short stories and poetry spin tales of desire that feel so real that you can practically smell the sweat on the lovers’ skin. In 2008, Delynn’s writing was great; this year she seems to have tapped into her voice and has written pieces that leave the reader clutching the mouse (or um, other things).  Additionally, she writes about hot, lusty, sexy dyke sex – proving that queer women can have dirty sex, too.

5) www.luriddigs.com

I didn’t discover this blog until 2009, and it gets my award for best discovery of the year.  A photo blog with commentary from a team of sassy writers, Lurid Digs posts photos of amateur, male nudes (mostly solo) – think the kind of photo you would see in a M4M Casual Encounters ad – and critiques it.  The critique is not of the model, however.  It is of the décor.  And it is hysterical.

6) www.early2rise.net

New to the web in 2009, Early to Rise is the boy blog created by Early to Bed, a feminist owned and run sex toy store in Chicago.  In addition to news about products available at Early to Bed, Early to Rise has advice, reviews and tips for dudes.  The best part of the site is that there is info for all kinds of men: straight, bi, gay, cissexual and trans.  The writers are clever, give some pretty solid advice (the pussy licking primer is especially good) and create a space where authentic male sexuality can be discussed.

7) www.bearsimjealousof.tumblr.com

Ok.  There isn’t really a tie in with this to 2009, but I am including it in my list, because I love bears and think they deserve as much love as possible. So cute.

8) www.cutechicagoboys.com

Cute Chicago Boys isn’t an explicit sex blog, but a collection of boys that the authors have deemed to be cute, and have subsequently interviewed and photographed.  This is a new site, and I get the feeling that the authors are still finding their groove, but they are off to a good start.  They have a good mix of gay and straight and undecided, which makes up for the lack of variety in types of guys (we get it, hipster boys are dreamy).  That said, it is an adorable concept and I am looking forward to seeking what they do with the site in 2010. Confidential to Troy S: How in the world are you available?  You are gorgeous.  Totes my favorite Cute Chicago Boy.

9) www.flithygorgeousthings.com

Comprised of articles, blog entries, random confessions and beautiful photographs, Filthy Gorgeous Things is a welcome addition to the Internet sex media world.  Part blog, with weekly entries from contributors, and part literary magazine with monthly themed “issues, this site is undoubtedly both filthy and gorgeous.  The site design alone is eye candy (hint: click on the icons on the top and bottom of the page.  They bring up confessions submitted by readers. Hot.).  The writing is top notch and the photos are professional, compelling and artistic.  Oh, and the content is super dirty.  Note: some pieces require a subscription to read them, but there is plenty of free content to keep you, er, entertained.

10) http://nattnightly.wordpress.com/

Natt Nightly is a genderfuck, transmaculine writer.  He covers topics ranging from love to lust, politics to romance and everything in between.  He is making the 2009 list because of an August entry; “Challenges”.  In the post, he challenges sex writers to extend beyond wham-bam fucking stories and delve into more intimate territory.  The post is thoughtful and sexy all at once.  I hope some sex bloggers take his advice and give us even hotter material for 2010!

Tania Unzueta’s Top Immigration News Items of 2009

December 28, 2009

Photobucket

Tania Unzueta is a queer, Latina immigrant rights activist living in Chicago. She works at 90.5 FM WRTE, as director of their journalism and digital media training program, and as producer of Sin Papeles, a Spanish-language radio show on immigration issues. She is also a member of the Chicago Dyke March Collective, and the Immigrant Youth Justice League. This list was written in collaboration with Rigo Padilla.

Immigrants are not out to steal your identity, supreme court rules.

It costs $300-500 dollars to get a social security number on the street, according to my sources. Some times it’s a card with a number made up on the spot, a phone number backwards. Some people don’t have to go to the street and can “borrow” the cousin’s number for example. Often, when the number does belong to an actual person, immigrants themselves may have no idea. After an immigration raid on May of 2008 in Postville, Iowa 270 people were charged with aggravated identity theft. People spoke out, and as a result on February 25th, 2009 the U.S. Supreme Court said no more. They decided that when the law says that identity theft is when a person “knowingly transfers, possesses, or uses, without lawful authority, a means of identification of another person,” the term “another person” must actually mean another person. One more step towards not criminalizing immigrants.

It is not ok to beat an immigrant to death, even if undocumented, turns out

On May 1st Brandon Piekarsky, 17, and Derrick Donchak, 19, of Shenandoah, Pennsylvania were found not guilty by an all-white jury connected to the beating death of Luis Ramirez in the summer of 2008. These two young people killed Ramirez as they insulted him using racial, and anti-immigrant slurs. The Latino community was outraged at the lack of accountability from the local courts, who declared Piekardsy and Donchak guilty of simple assault. But on December 15th, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that a federal grand jury indicted both of the attackers with committing a federal hate crime, and accused the Shenandoah Police Chief and the Lieutenant of “conspiring to obstruct ustice during the investigation.” Still waiting to see what this indictment will result in, but it’s good to hear that there is some accountability even at the federal government, particularly as hate crimes against Latinos and immigrants or perceived immigrants, are on the rise.

No more “No-Match”

No-Match letters were mailed to let the employees and employers know that there was a discrepancy between records of the Social Security Administration (SSA), and the information the employee provided. There was time to fix it, it may be a misspelling, or a change of last name or a change of gender. But what often happened instead in the immigrant community was that employers began to assume that letters meant undocumented, and some times being right, would use them to threaten workers when they would express a desire to unionize or complained about labor practices. In July DHS announced that it would stop sending these letters, and instead focus on E-verify.

E-verify has lots of E-rrors

On September 8th it became official that the DHS would begin requiring companies that have contracts with the federal government to use this E-verify. These companies have to enter the potential hire into a database connected to the SSA and DHS, and find out whether they are eligible to work or not. It’s biggest flaw: that 17.8 million of the SSA’s records have errors, and that 12.7 of those relate to U.S. citizens.

Crossing the border under Obama

The number of deaths at the U.S./ Mexico border  have increased under President Barack Obama’s administration. So have deportations and separation of families. Local enforcement of immigration laws that are detrimental to undocumented immigrants and their families have also increased. Some of us are still hoping that this is part of a sort of warped strategy: Enforcement first, just so that we can get legalization later. We’ll see… for now, we should keep up the pressure.

Basta Dobbs!

On November 11th then CNN anchor Lou Dobbs announced that he was leaving the network. Turns out CNN payed out his contract for $8 million, because of his “advocacy reporting” specifically on immigration. If you try not to think about the $8 million, you may be able to appreciate that in part this had to do with community mobilization. The network had been receiving pressure from organizations through the BastaDobbs.com campaign, which had started in September. After the announcement the campaign said “Our contention all along was that Lou Dobbs – who has a long record of spreading lies and conspiracy theories about immigrants and Latinos – does not belong on the ‘Most Trusted Name in News…’ We are thrilled that Dobbs no longer has this legitimate platform from which to incite fear and hate.

It is now okay to say “undocumented” in the court room

On December 08th, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote: “the company employed undocumented immigrants.” And she continued using “undocumented” throughout the decision. It’s the first time that the word is used within the U.S. Supreme Court, compared to12 other times for “illegal immigrant.” People are not illegal. They have or don’t have documents. Using the word “illegal” is just not cool, but Justice Sonia Sotomayor is.

Youth mobilize against deportations

University of Illinois at Chicago Student Rigo Padilla succeeded in deferring his deportation for a year, as of December 10th. That was a really big deal for the immigrant rights community, and of personal significance (in the interest of full disclosure I should say that I was a bit involved in his campaign, as he happened to be a journalism student at Radio Arte). This connects to a national movement of undocumented youth leading mobilizations like this one. At a local level, I have been able to see what I consider a revitalization of the youth immigrant rights movement in Chicago that first began to mobilize for Rigo, and has continued to continue fighting for immigrant students, and in favor of a just immigration reform. This group has developed into the Immigrant Youth Justice League, with a vision to become the organizing hub for undocumented youth organizing in Chicago. You will be hearing more from IYJL. Notably, this was also the first time I hear about university professors fighting for immigrant students. Perhaps a precedent to replicate.

USA Today Fail

If you visit the USA Today Article on Rigo’s stay of deportation, it now reads “Groups try to delay deportations of illegal immigrant students.” A few days ago, the word “immigrant” was not there, and it read: “… illegal students.” This small change is the result of the mobilization of students from the national DreamActivist.Org network, who began asking “What the heck is an illegal student?” . They have responded with a campaign and website focused on the use of the word “illegal” by the mainstream media. At the time I’m writing this blog, USA Today has not issued a statement about the change in the headline of the story, and students have said they will refuse to give interviews to people who use the word “illegal.” This an escalation to the continuing fight to have immigrants be treated and labeled as people on the media, and you should look out for developments.

CIR ASAP!

And as the year comes to an end, on December 16th Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez introduced the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity Act, also known as H.R. 4321 or CIR ASAP. I should say that many immigrant rights activists, including myself, dislike the emphasis on border security and enforcement, but applaud the legalization option, as well as other provisions: protections of workers, the end of the 287g program, for example. The next months are going to see the debate get intense. On the side of immigrant rights activists, I think that what we must remember is that we are all on the same side: seeking just living conditions for all, and for this we need to support legalization. The proposal has been introduced, but it will be up to people to pressure our legislative officials to pass it. We’re living in times that will make history, and each one of us should think about what role we want to play in this struggle.

Davey’s Top Ten Websites of 2009

December 27, 2009

Photobucket

Davey Ball is a nerdy website designer living in Chicago.  Check out his site (and great collection of videos of Elizabeth Tashjian aka “the nut lady”) at www.raygun.org.
TMZ
http://www.tmz.com
There is a real rift in my friend circle.  Half of them have no idea what the hell Team Werewolf or Team Vampire even means, while the other half totally agree when I say that Andy Cohen is a television genius — the gay version of Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock, except the mastermind behind Bravo instead of NBC.  But let’s all remember when we converged over tragedy scouring TMZ when they first broke the story of Michael Jackson’s death.  I’d like to remind everyone that in 2009, gossip reporting trumped the professionals, when TMZ beat the New York Times to the punch.  Of course, I’m also not forgetting how awful Balloon Boy was either.

The Vigilant Citizen
http://www.vigilantcitizen.com
Okay, so MAYBE you don’t really care about The Black Eyed Peas.  But would you care if their latest hit single was broken down and explained as a quest for spiritual enlightenment, based on esoteric teachings complete with video stills as proof?  This is like a fun game of “How many All-Seeing Evil Eyes of Fatima references can we find in a Lady GaGa video?”. The more you read this website, the more creeped out you are by the startling amount of media evidence suggesting that the Illuminati and Occult rule the pop industry and are infiltrating the minds of millions.  It’s evidentiary deception at it’s finest.
The Tom & Lorenzo Blog
http://projectrungay.blogspot.com
These two sassy gay men do a LOT more than write about Project Runway on “America’s #1 Project Runway Blog”.  If you watch Mad Men, this site will really open up your mind, when they break each episode by theme and really dig deep into the subtle genius of the show.  It’s also a really great way to keep up to date on some of the former designers featured on Runway.  I’m pretty sure these guys will also be doing reviews of each episode of RuPaul’s next drag race season in 2010 too!
Mad Men Footnotes
http://www.madmenfootnotes.com
I can’t bring up Mad Men, and not talk about it some more (sorry, non-fans!). Mad Men Footnotes, a blog that’s soon going to be turned into a book (every bloggers dream, right?), is a true homage to the 60′s.  Want to see the REAL ad they reference in a Mad Men episode?  Chances are, it’s been posted and discussed with historical accuracy here.
Infosthetics

I’m a nerd and I LOVE a map!  Infosthetics is a blog all about innovative graphical representations of data.  Sound boring?  Wait until you see this website link to a map (http://envisioningdevelopment.net/map) of New York City organized by neighborhood income averages.  When you select the question ‘Who can afford to live here?’ you can explore detailed rent price information. (By the way, Housing is ‘affordable’ if one spends 30% or less of income on rent or mortgage payments.)
Letters of Note
http://www.lettersofnote.com
This new blog publishes correspondence of all kinds, ranging from David Bowie responding to a fan letter, to Abraham Lincoln talking about his opinions on slavery.  Famous, political, and mundane folks alike, every one of these letters, notes, and doodles are endlessly fascinating.
Ryan Sullivan’s Island
http://sullivanstim.blogspot.com
What happens when a fairly innocent 24-year-old artsy filmmaker from Nebraska moves to San Francisco and contacts gay porn’s MOST controversial company (Treasure Island Media) to work on making a documentary about the porn industry?  You get a blog like this one.  Surprising and oftentimes a little too “real” for comfort, I just can’t stop watching the short clips posted here.  When Ryan’s estranged brother who no longer speaks to him suddenly turns up for an audition, blindfolded and not knowing Ryan is filming a scene of his, things start to get really crazy.  It’s not a TMI fan-fest, that’s for sure!  And thank goodness.
The Queerist
http://www.thequeerist.com
Launched this year, The Queerist is a pretty rad site for promoting your events.  Unlike Facebook, this makes your event available to the masses and not just your select group.  Made by my favorite design firm in Chicago (Firebelly Design – http://www.firebellydesign.com), it’s a breeze to browse and use.  This is also great if you’re traveling and want to find something fun, underground and gay to go to.
Bitly.tv
http://bitly.tv/
Sometimes I find myself staring at YouTube wondering what I should watch.  Released last week by the popular url-shortening service bit.ly, this new website helps.  Through some super secret algorithm it shows you what people are watching online and you can find some REAL gems here.  It covers Vimeo and some other video sites too.
Google Reader
http://reader.google.com
How can I bring up a top 10 websites list, without talking about the “one website to rule them all”.  I’m always taken aback when my less nerdy savvy friends don’t utilize Google Reader.  Think of it like a newspaper of all the websites you love to read that you get to create yourself!  Just look for RSS feed links or icons on your favorite websites and blogs, copy the URL into Google Reader, and see all the updates go there when they’re published.  Stop living in 1995!  This is about as revolutionary as e-mail.

Chris Stedman’s Top 10 Religious-Relevant Themes of 2009

December 26, 2009

Photobucket*Photo by Julie Maxwell

Chris Stedman is a Master of Arts in Religion student who works for the Interfaith Youth Core, a Chicago-based NGO that works to change the public narrative on religion from one of conflict to one of cooperation. Chris is a member of the American Humanist Association and voting member of the Secular Student Alliance, coordinates religious roundtables for Vocalo and is working on a post-graduate certificate in Spiritual Direction, making him the first self-identified non-religious individual to do so. He runs the blog NonProphet Status. [Editor's note, NonProphet Status now in the sidebar]

You Say “Muslim” Like it’s a Bad Thing…

Islamophobia manifests in new and increasingly unusual ways these days. This year liberal enclave Switzerland passed a ban on the construction of minarets, an architectural feature of mosques, or Muslim houses of worship. The measure, put up for a popular vote by the country’s conservative party, was promoted with hateful propaganda. Islam continued to be a target for conservatives in America, and the November shooting at Fort Hood in Texas by a Muslim man fueled this fire, prompting Pat Robertson to claim that Islam is not a religion. Entertainment retailer Best Buy wished Muslims a “Happy Eid al-Adha” in an advertisement and faced a boycott by the crazies over at the Free Republic while its other holiday wishes went unprotested. And despite continued belief to the contrary, President Barack Obama is still not a Muslim, though the investigation persists.

Pray the Gay Away!

Of course, Muslims weren’t the only hated group in America in 2009 as queer sex continued to make religious conservatives nervous. For starters, gay exorcisms are still happening, apparently. Also shaking things up was the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the fourth-largest Protestant Christian denomination, which voted by a narrow margin to ordain individuals in committed same-sex relationships, threatening to split the denomination. A tornado appeared nearby during the vote and was seen by some as – of course – a sign of judgment from God. The Anglican Church also faced a possible split over the issue this year. Protestant denominations weren’t the only to wrestle over the issue in 2009, and the Proposition 8 fallout continued for Mormons. (Oh well, at least the third season of “Big Love” was good this year, though it too courted controversy by revealing secret Mormon temple rites.) Meanwhile, Miss California Carrie Prejean lost her chance at the Miss USA crown by defending “opposite marriage” but, in spite of being “victimized by the liberal media” over some personal videos she made and being stripped of her Miss California title for failing to do her beauty queen duties, positioned herself as one of the most prominent opponents of same-sex marriage with a terribly-reviewed book and “opposite classy” appearance on Larry King Live.

The Separation of Church and Hate

Prejean’s bosom buddies Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann, part of an increasingly defensive political right, worked hard this year to build a platform on religious totalitarianism, and a lot of their colleagues followed suit. Bachmann, far removed from her days of hiding in bushes and kissing a Bush, took this year’s crazy cake and is now the star of the Tea Bag – erm, sorry, Tea PartyMovement, frequently using religious language to justify her crazy conspiracy theorizing. This year Bachmann, who once called herself a “fool for Christ,” specifically targeted fellow Minnesota Representative Keith Ellison’s Muslim faith and criticized Obama for stating that America is not a “Christian nation.” That’s right, she publicly opposes the separation of church and state. Sarah Palin also continued to tap into the conservative religious base this year, while the father of her grandchild courted another base altogether. The more extreme parts of Bachmann and Palin’s religious base, when not comparing health care reform to the Holocaust, wasted a lot of energy on license plates.

I’m Pro-Life… Unless That Life Belongs to a Baby-Killer

Thanks to this same conservative religious base, abortion continued to be a messy moral matter in 2009. In May, abortion doctor George Tiller was murdered while attending church. His killer called the act “justified,” citing his religious belief that abortion is murder. Tiller, a long-time target of the religious right, did not live to see the renewed debate that ensued after his death. Abortion was also a hot button issue of health care reform. In Illinois, a parental consent law almost went into effect that would require physicians to inform the parents of teenage girls before performing an abortion; the law in on hold until at least next year. Also in Illinois, a Dominican Catholic nun continues to volunteer as an abortion clinic escort, upsetting fellow Catholics. Early in the year, Obama reversed a rule that prohibited U.S. funds from going to clinics that provide abortions or refer to places that provide abortions. Yeah, this issue isn’t going away anytime soon.

Chugga Chugga, Chugga Chugga, Eboo: Interfaith Cooperation Gains Steam

In spite of all the divisive stuff above, it is a good time to believe in the idea that we should all just try our best to get along as interfaith cooperation gained serious traction this year, evolving this year from just a buzz phrase into a discernable movement. My boss, IFYC founder Eboo Patel, continued to spread the message of interfaith cooperation by being appointed to Obama’s Faith Advisory Council, named one of America’s Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report, and awarded the 2009 Roosevelt Institute’s Freedom of Worship Medal and 2010 Louisville Grawemeyer Award in Religion. Obama highlighted the necessity of interfaith cooperation in several prominent addresses, including his Nobel Prize address and his speech in Cairo. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair promoted the movement through the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, and I busted my ass to put together an international interfaith conference here in Chicago for IFYC.

Godliness vs. Goodliness

One of the plenary speakers at that conference was Harvard Humanist Chaplain Greg Epstein, who also released a book this year, “Good Without God.” He is part of a set of increasingly public voices that articulate non-religiosity as a viable life-stance – Secular Humanism – without trash-talking religion, in stark contrast to the anti-religious rhetoric espoused by folks like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and comedian Bill Maher. Obama acknowledged “nonbelievers” in his inaugural address, becoming the first American President to do so, and, to continue my self-promotion, I wrote a guest blog on respecting religion while remaining secular for the Washington Post. And though I may be famous in my own mind, I can’t compete with Joss Whedon, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Humanism.

All Former Child Stars Go To Heaven: Kirk Cameron Edition

“Famous” is a fairly open term, but it often does grant you a soapbox. 2009 was a good year to be a former child star turned religious wingnut as Kirk Cameron got even crazier, making everyone unexpectedly nostalgic for “Growing Pains.” He launched a campaign to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s “Origin of Species” that distributed copies of the book on college campuses. The trick is that the copies he hands out contain a special introduction that aims to discredit Darwin. Sneaky, eh? At least Cameron, who once famously offered up the modern banana as evidence of creationism, is trying to use historical facts this time, as much as he distorts them. Cameron’s not the only one editing books – a project called the Conservative Bible Project was launched to remove the “liberal bias” from the Bible. Guess God didn’t get it right the first time, then?

That Old Time Religion, It Ain’t What It Used To Be

It seems that the folks behind the Conservative Bible Project aren’t the only ones taking issue with traditional religiosity. Though the secular boom of the nineties is over, studies show that young Americans are “losing their religion” – the number of folks who do not identify with a religious tradition jumped by at least 25 percent in recent years. This data suggests, however, that this shift is not due to a lack of interest in religious issues. Rather, young people find religion as it currently operates to be outdated. Though I worry about our culture losing religion altogether, I find this study encouraging; besides the data that shows a growing open-mindedness to the beliefs of others, it is essentially an apologia for what I’m doing as a Humanist: “In the end… this ‘stunning’ trend of young people becoming less religious could lead to America’s next great burst of religious innovation.”

Photobucket

Sending God a Friend Request

Not all religious innovations, however, are great. Online churches, the latest e-trend, are on the rise in a big way. Seriously? What does e-church even look like? Instead of a collection plate, is there a PayPal link? How do you download communion? Can I get baptized in a chat room? I appreciate the internet as a means of connecting with others, but I feel like this is just a tiny step too far.

The Pope has an Opportunity to “Get All the Pussy…”

The ever-perky Sarah Silverman challenged the Vatican with a plan to end world hunger, though they’ve yet to take her up on the idea.

Amos Mac’s Best of 2009

December 26, 2009

Photobucket*Photo by D. Nicoletta

Amos Mac is a photographer who documents the queer community. He has shown his work internationally, most recently in Australia, and has been published on the pages of McSweeney’s, Maximum Rock N Roll, the annual documentary photo book “Cutter”, and does portraits and interviews for BUTT magazine’s blog. He is the photographer behind Original Plumbing, the quarterly photo and interview-saturated print mag for trans guys. Original Plumbing is now in the sidebar.

10- Lady Gaga on my 30th fucking birthday : I just cringed when typing out the number “30″.  When I was in 4th grade my mother made me pick between going to THE New Kids on the Block concert at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, or having a birthday party.   I picked “birthday party” yet never forgave her for making me choose.  So when Gaga tickets went on sale and I saw the show was on my actual birthday, I of course was triggered yet realized that I hate birthday parties, especially for myself, and bought a pair of tickets for what is sure to be the most amazing show of the year. (www.ladygaga.com)

9 – Leaving America : I left the glorious continent in which I was born and raised in for the first time ever this past fall! I flew all the way to Munich by myself, passed out on an indoor hammock for 4 hours to deal with jet lag, then took 2 subways and a bus to meet up with Michelle Tea on Sister Spit ‘s first ever Eurotrash tour.  We traveled through Germany and France in a van, got ditched by our lunatic driver on the outskirts of Paris, flew to London and gallivanted around the English countryside, all while I promoted my transsexual magazine and showed slides of my work. (http://blog.sfmoma.org/2009/09/on-the-road-with-original-plumbing/)

8 – Ascots : So I was just in LA and I stopped at this vintage clothing store called Hubba Hubba in Burbank.  The woman behind the counter was a tad on the pushy side.. borderline bully status. As soon as I walked in the door she was all “you know I dress the guys from MAD MEN  and boy oh boy I wish they were YOUR size. You have that vintage size that the men had back in the day when these clothes were ORIGINALLY made! I know JUST the shirt for you. And hat! Don’t forget the suit jackets right in the back. Fancy some wingtip shoes?” I left with an ascot. I love ascots. And to read more about the crazy shop owner, check out the link above.

7 – LOVE Magazine, Issue 2, Winter 2009

I love teens. And this issue was all about teens, fashion and fame. Amazing photographs and articles on teenagers like Rory Culkin, the Willis sisters, and an expose on the Disney machine.

6- The Day Michael Jackson Died & I Was Laid Off

Oh, June 25, 2009, what a dramatic day! I was killing time at my dead end desk job at a gay porn company when I learned (via 100′s of updated Facebook statuses at once) that my beloved Michael Jackson had passed away. Within seconds, I was called into my bosses office and told that due to the economy, blah blah blah, I was one of the next hand full of employees to get axed. I thanked my boss, still dazed from new the news of sweet Michael’s passing. Enter #5.

5- Original Plumbing Magazine

It really exists. Thanks to the #6  (getting laid off from my job, not Michael Jackson dying) I was able to concentrate fully on an idea I had been toying with for awhile– putting together a photo-based magazine on trans male culture.

4- Latest Accent Obsession :  North Jersey. Specifically, comedian John Roberts. “Go turn on my tree.”

3 – Kind Addiction : Fro-yo by the ounce at Icebee in San Francisco.

Pinkberry is so “Perez Hilton 2007″. With self-serve toppings from fresh kiwi to Cinnamon toast crunch cereal, I dare you to try and get a cup of Icebee fro-yo for less than $10.

2- Louis Wain

Crazy man who drew cats in the 1920′s. Tattoo inspirations for life!

1 – “Nobody Knows I’m A Transsexual” t-shirts
A few years ago I thought it would be hilarious to make a t-shirt that says NOBODY KNOWS I’M A TRANSSEXUAL and in 2009 I did it, and I actually wear it, and you can too… if you give me $20.

Harrison Cheairs’s Best of 2009

December 25, 2009

Photobucket

Harrison Cheairs is a fashion designer living and working in Chicago. You can find him out on the town dressed up for special occasions and this is his first time blogging for TPR.

This American Life: Episode 374 “Somewhere Out There—Act 2: Tom Girls” (story starts @ minute 29)

This story is sooooo many things: Heartbreaking, Uplifting, Beautifully-Amazing! I wish I was half as brave in my adult-life as these kids are in their adolescence….

MICHAEL JACKSON THRILLER ZOMBIE WALK!

Um, HI: this is the best thing that came out of the death of MJ, and it was UNREAL! Cities around the world, Michael Jackson’s HITS, 1000 people (in Chicago at least), “Thriller” choreography, and ZOMBIES taking over the streets!!!!!! So, who’s dying next year!?

GILTMAN

So, have you heard of Gilt Groupe? No? Where have you BEEN?!!

So Gilt, an invitation only shopping site that specializes in higher end merch at ridiculously affordable prices (and all IN SEASON!!!!), technically debuted last year, but 2009 brought the launch of GILTMAN, a site dedicated completely to the fashionable man whose pockets are not as deep as his taste level.

You’ll have to see it to believe it! I invite you. OH- and consider that credit I receive if you make a purchase, my finder’s fee for introducing you to a site sooooooo AMAZING! AND there is an iPhone app!

MINT JULEPS!!

This has nothing really to do with the year 2009. No popular TV series or Movie made it popular, nor did a Major/Minor celebrity endorse them, but I was OBSESSED!! So much so, that I stopped drinking for a month because of over indulgence!!

MUSIC

So, I loved a lot this year but I’ve limited this list down to 10 songs I listen to almost daily, equally split between male and female leads, and these are in NO order either:

I’m a Pilot – Fanfarlo
Marrow – St. Vincent
11th Dimension – Julian Casablancas
Antonia Jane – Lightning Dust
Home – Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
All is Love – Karen O and the Kids
Furr – Blitzen Trapper
Epiliepsy is Dancing – Antony and the Johnsons
While You Wait for the Others – Grizzly Bear
French Navy – Camera Obscura

(Dear readers: I am aware of the lack of musical diversity on this list… I lived/loved in a moody nest in 2009.)

MARIOS SCHWAB 3D TEXTILE PRINT
This is most amazing!!!!! I love technology and fashion- and this print is a beautiful mix of both!

GREY GARDENS – the movie not the documentary
If you haven’t seen this… you’ve missed something magical.

DEVILS ON HORSEBACK

Delicious hors d’oeuvres served at a Freemans NYC : Prunes stuffed with Blue Cheese wrapped in Bacon!!

TRACY MORGAN on FRESH AIR

So Terry Gross interviewing Tracy Morgan expecting funny and got the opposite… I LOVE it!
