Jacob Meehan in BUTT #27

September 10, 2009

Chicago’s Jacob Meehan, photographer and director of Lakeview’s GOLDEN gallery is having quite a September. First, his photos of the Bijou Theatre (the nations oldest running porn theater) appeared in the current issue of Butt Magazine, alongside interview with Bijou owner Steven Toushin. Meehan was kind enough to send over some Bijou “outtakes” which are posted here after the jump. In addition to being published in one of the most interesting and respected indie-gay publications, Meehan’s gallery’s latest show is happening this Saturday the 12th at GOLDEN Gallery, 816 W. Newport, featuring a collection of photographs by Doug Ischar. Ischar is a local professor and documented Chicago’s Belmont Rocks in the early 80′s, a lakefront paradise of gay men flaunting their queerness. The show is called “Marginal Waters” and it’s showing through October 17th.  More information at golden-gallery.org, read an interview with Ischar in this week’s Timeout.

‘My Fellow Americans’ This October

September 10, 2009

Photobucket * Photo By Cheryl Mann

I told you about ‘My Fellow Americans,’ the modern performance piece about Ronald Reagan by Peter Carpenter a while ago, as it was supposed to debut in May. Unfortunate delays now wrapped up, October 8,9, 15 and 16 will be special nights in Chicago as the show will go on as originally intended. My Fellow Americans will be performed at Hamlin Park Studio Theater located at 3035 N. Hoyne-2nd floor, Chicago. From the press release: Carpenter’s gift for deftly weaving movement and text shines in this work which explores the shifting identity of Ronald Reagan from the perspectives of the “special interest groups” that his rhetoric and policies consistently admonished. Seriously, if you are in any way interested in why your post-queer, post-racial, post-feminist life has all the road blocks it does, you need to see this.

In the aftermath of mainstream success and the inevitable super-polish of Tegan and Sarah’s next album (I love them but it’s gonna be shiny and smooth, people) where are we to go for that raw sound we CRAVE from our queer sisters? With most bands getting more out of synth keys than guitar frets, who will play our small clubs and rock our socks off? Enter Post Post, a Philly-based band of young queer females that is seamlessly balancing the line between power chords and soft lines, complete with Tegan-ish vocal reaches, aggressive drumming and impressive hooks. Their debut EP, Meta Meta is 5 songs of chiming guitar pop, but it has that DIY freshness that endears a band to you long after they have a budget. Get in on this now, you’ll be able to say you saw them when. Tracks are currently available for full streaming preview on Last.fm and Myspace, and will be available for download from awkwardcore.com and CDBaby.com on Sept. 4th.

Hannah Free

September 1, 2009

Remember when you were a baby gay and Michael Novotny’s mother from Queer as Folk was the not-so-silent hero of the show, because she always brought the self-centered gays down to earth, and also her disdain for Brian was tempered but fair? Well fast forward to 2009 and Sharon Gless is still fighting the good fight on camera, this time as the title character in Hannah Free. What we’ve got here is secret midwestern life-long love affair and thank GOD one of them looks real butch, not L-Word butch. Shot entirely in Chicago and produced by our very own Tracy Baim, the film has already gotten some awards and the Chicago screenings have begun to sell out. The film will have a one-week limited engagement in Chicago Sept. 25-Oct. 1 at the Gene Siskel Film Center of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 164 N. State. On September 26th, there will be a gala featuring Sharon Gless and other cast members, along with live music by Lucy Smith. More information is available at hannahfree.com. Trailer below, tickets here.
