Make a Call for Immigrant LGBT Equality
September 29, 2009
According to Immigration Equality, Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Chicago is meeting with Congressional colleagues this Thursday to decide whether a provision to include LGBT rights will be included in a comprehensive immigration reform bill to be introduced soon. Same sex couples need the same rights, regardless of citizenship status. We need Gutierrez’ constituents, donors, and other activists to reach out to his staff now. If a “comprehensive immigration reform” effort passes congress without the provision for same-sex couples, it will be virtually impossible to move it forward separately.
Would you call Susan Collins (Legislative Director for Gutierrez at 202-225-8203 (or Jennice Fuentes, Chief of Staff, if you know her) and convey these messages:
This is a progressive immigration bill and the LGBT community must not be left behind. We commend Congressman Gutierrez vocal support for the Uniting American Families Act over the years and it is essential that UAFA – and our community – be included in his comprehensive immigration reform bill. We cannot continue to be locked out of the U.S. immigration system.
If this is an LGBT-inclusive bill, we can help mobilize our LGBT base in support of it. We have a strong grassroots movement that must be part of any coalition effort to achieve immigration reform – but we can only mobilize this support if our families are included. If you make this call, it would be very helpful for you to send me an email, and let me know what kind of response you received. I’ll be passing the information about to Immigration Equality for their ongoing lobbying efforts.

Sissy Dude’s Down
September 15, 2009
Not sure, but it looks like Sissy Dude is a victim of the random Google homophobia that sometimes bestrickens porny blogs. It sucks, and usually there is no getting it back. For now, I’m sure John Webster is scrambling to retrieve his archives and John, if you are looking for suggestions, I’d try WordPress. All of you thirsty for Webster’s signature art without the furry cracks can check for updates at his art blog the John Webster Book or at his home decor blog, Kitch’n.

Antitrust Circus
September 15, 2009
We’ve been getting little tastes here and there, but Antibody Dance‘s evening length is finally descending on Chicago this September 25-27 at Links Hall. Artistic director Adam Rose’s drag persona Elena will be in full swing, along with a cast of dancers challenged with the task of interpreting his limber choreography in “Antitrust Circus.” I’m excited for several reasons, not the least of which is a complete snapshot of Antibody Dance’s philosophy: while most performers make objections against the dark forces of the world, or use them as metaphors for political stances, Antibody channels them. Willingly wading in “fragments of spiritual traditions as ritual acts in a circus,” I haven’t yet found a joke in one of Rose’s dance pieces. I mean, I’ve laughed during a Rose piece, but a) I was the only one doing it and b) it was mostly because I was THRILLED to be feeling like I was looking at some agent of death. Earlier this year in a TPR interview, I asked him how he was helping the world and he said, “manifesting dark energies in the context of performance can have a cathartic effect and lead to healing.” It’s his sincerity that sets Antibody apart from a simple goth pose and its his talent that can balance grim portraits with a belief in kindness.
Local queer performer JSun Howard is also on the bill.

Ssion’s BOY
September 15, 2009
Kansas City, Ssion‘s home, was the scene of some sort of pink carpet premiere when Casey Spooner, Jeppe, Hunx and Chicago’s Rita Bacon attended the unveiling of BOY, Cody Critcheloe’s new movie. I’ve been trying to find official details (length, starring, plot, etc) but it’s not jumping out at me on these internets right this second. What we do know is that Cody’s been wetting his whistle making a slew of music videos for his band, each getting more interesting and more entertaining than the previous ones. This extended player should be rewarding, if not downright brilliant and Chicago’s getting it chance October 1st, when BOY screens at the Smart Museum in Hyde Park. SEE YOU THERE! Cody’s also DJ-ing at Berlin that night.

Otalia Everafter…
September 15, 2009
As Guiding Light fades off the air this week, we Otalia fans are on the edge of our seats!! Guiding Light has been lacking for years now and the only compelling love story playing out as of late has been this refreshing tale of two adult women battling the odds to be with each other. Classic soap story with a lesbian twist! Unfortunately as much as this story has been entertaining it’s still missing essential components of realism. Longing looks and warm hugs are cute but come on now! Can we get a juicy Otalia kiss?!?!? Of course some sexual relations for Otalia would be ideal but with the clock ticking and the fact that they haven’t even shared a kiss yet, sex is doubtful. All the investment put into this story will seem moot if Otalia isn’t given that one smooch. Guiding Light was already robbed of any future, here’s to hoping Otalia isn’t robbed of their last chance to be portrayed just as equally as all the heterosexual couples that have filled our daytime screens for years now!

Flesh Hungry Dog Show Making Me Salivate
September 11, 2009
The Flesh Hungry Dog Show has been going on for a while in Chicago, but tonight’s show and next month’s are gearing up to be something special. Performing tonight will be lipstick toting hetero Bobby Conn and his partner Monica Bou Bou: I’ve seen first hand what their combination of flamboyant guitars and crisp, understated violin can do, and this gig should be great. Local folksters Dylan Rice and Congress of Starlings round it out for nice showcase of the City’s queer talent. The next one on September 18th is a special back to school show with Jinx Titanic and Super 8 Cum Shot, as well as Actor Slash Model and Lez Bo-Bo the Clown. Gary Airedale, brain and host of the event had better keep this stellar booking up! DJ Sky is resident here, say hi, she is a daddy-doll!! FHDS happens at Jackhammer, 9pm 6406 N. Clark St. $10 at the Door, $8 advance purchase.

Matmos Taught Me Who Alan Turing Was
September 11, 2009
It was right before The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast was released when Matmos played a free show at the Chicago Cultural Center. I had just found out the day of and ran over (I was laid off at the time and had SO much free time and NO money) and of course the show was amazing. A merch table once-over had me attached to a small plastic casing with a black and white cover and all it said was “For Alan Turing.” I asked, and Martin told me who Alan Turing was and that the tour-only 3″ CD was an outtakes package for the record. I bought one for me and one for a friend’s birthday.
Alan Turing has been making the headlines because people have been demanding an apology for his treatment by the British government (I signed a petition a few weeks back). Turing was a mathematician and army vet and is credited with cracking enemy codes that led to the conclusion and win of World War II. Afterward, he was exposed as being a homosexual and was chemically castrated. Two years later, he committed suicide and it wasn’t until today (this happened in 1952, people) that the British Prime Minister has issued a public official apology. So…more than 50 years later and all I can think of is how long we’ll have to wait for an apology from our government’s treatment of transfolk, and the complete lack of effort to include them in the conversation. At the time of Alan Turing’s conviction. homosexuality was still considered a disorder, and trans gender is considered that today. W.T.F.
