Nothing new from the Simian Mobile Disco boys but they are getting some indie-queer cred with this Beth Ditto drop on their song “Cruel Intentions.” Their record, Temporary Pleasure comes out August 17th.

The Queerist

August 6, 2009

Photobucket

The Queerist is a new website that aims to aggregate queer events aroung the country in a one-stop-shop place for people traveling in and out of their communities. It’s free and everyone is allowed to post as long as you register. It’s still in Beta but so far it looks good and already had two fun things happening in Chicago. Go ahead and sign up! I’m thinking it could be the beginning of cool calendar and events page.

Aspic Tines: Chicago Homage to Klaus Nomi

August 5, 2009

Photobucket

I was over at Sub-T for the first Queeraoke (happening every 1st Monday) and had a really nice conversation with Mark Ruvolo, a veteran of the Chicago punk scene. He told me about his homage to Klaus Nomi, a project called Aspic Tines and it just released its first record on Ruvolo’s imprint, Johann’s Face. All original songs done in the style of Nomi, or “intergalactic electro.” If you have not seen “The Nomi Song,” the definitive doc about Klaus Nomi, do yourself a queer favor and go and see it. You’ll then understand why Aspic Tines is so fucking cool. What I’m most impressed by is not the costume or persona, but the fine line Ruvolo walks between camp and earnest. That accent is fake but he’s in love with it; the make up and hairdo are not Ruvolo’s style but they fit the swirling, jittery electronics like a black velvet glove. Instant fan, here.

CONTEST: Twitter Followers Get a Chance for Breeders Tix

August 4, 2009

Photobucket

A lot of blogs I follow post things about queer art, politics, music, events, etc. They also post stuff about queer icons, the argument being that as people we don’t ONLY listen to/follow queer shit. That is certainly true for me, but I’ve always reserved TPR for the non-icons; I can’t live without my allies but TPR is an oasis…by policy. So when presented with the opportunity to give away Breeders tickets, you swear I was going to say no! But the catch is that this post is about TPR’s mission and it lets you know that if you follow me (@thinkpinkradio) and send me a tweet that tells me why we need our breeder allies to fight the big gay fight, then you’ll have chance to win a pair of tix to Kim and Kelly Deal’s show at Metro on Thursday August 13th. You gotta follow, though. Contest ends Monday the 10th at 7pm. Simple!
