Aspic Tines: Chicago Homage to Klaus Nomi
August 5, 2009
I was over at Sub-T for the first Queeraoke (happening every 1st Monday) and had a really nice conversation with Mark Ruvolo, a veteran of the Chicago punk scene. He told me about his homage to Klaus Nomi, a project called Aspic Tines and it just released its first record on Ruvolo’s imprint, Johann’s Face. All original songs done in the style of Nomi, or “intergalactic electro.” If you have not seen “The Nomi Song,” the definitive doc about Klaus Nomi, do yourself a queer favor and go and see it. You’ll then understand why Aspic Tines is so fucking cool. What I’m most impressed by is not the costume or persona, but the fine line Ruvolo walks between camp and earnest. That accent is fake but he’s in love with it; the make up and hairdo are not Ruvolo’s style but they fit the swirling, jittery electronics like a black velvet glove. Instant fan, here.

Very nice Klaus Nomi.
