Having just enjoyed myself immensely at Threat Level, it’s great to watch hosts Actor Slash Model’s sample of “Riot Acts,” their documentary about trans musicians. Its stated aim “Flaunting gender deviance in music performance” seems spot on, with a wide range of gender expressions as well as musical styles and fierce editing skills to boot. This sample really gets me excited for the final thing. September ’09 is the promised release date, keep up to date with the project and the Chicago based film makers at actorslashmodel.com

Stories From Windy City Black Pride
July 17, 2009
A couple of weekends ago I was tabling for Vocalo.org at Windy City Black Pride, the MIdwest’s largest gathering of GLBTQ people of color. The set up was to collect stories via a “yard sale.” We have a various objects on a table and festival goers are allowed to take anything they want as long as they tell me a story. I got MANY good voices and produced them for the Vocalo.org library. It’s really easy to get YOUR voice heard on a full power non-profit radio station using the tools at their website, WCBP was no exception. These people got some free stuff and told some great stories. Here are a two, click over for the rest of them at my Vocalo.org profile.
Players vs. Heart Breaks, a splicing of several interviews with those who play and those who have been played.
I Tried It, a funny story of a woman who has tried gay life but didn’t like it:

The Homo Show Now ON SALE!
July 14, 2009The latest installment of About Face Theatre’s Summer Camp, The Homo Show is on sale now! From what I heard, auditions went well and while they haven’t announced the roster yet, the lineup should be no less than fierce. I got wind of some rumors about a fave TPR band making the list, also a certain locals that are no less than the best in the whole city. I WISH I could say more but no, it has to wait. In the meantime, you know Leslie Hall–she hasn’t been here in a bit so it’s about time for some gold pants fun. I remember she named my gem sweater “Egg Droppings Panda Bear.” Reaganomix and I are DJ-ing, this really will be a can’t miss.

Midwest Queer Zinester Roadshow
July 14, 2009
Chicago, Milwaukee, and Madison get to play Midwest hostesses to 7 touring queer zinesters. Demos represented among the authors are the jewsies, fat black females, gender neutral pronounzes, bi-racial musicians, and of course my gayz. I’m loving that in the age of dying print publications, the purveyors of tangible, DIY magazines are forced to make their product even MORE special than they already are. It’s a testament to the art form of collectible archives, whether for the bathroom or coffee table, this is sure to be a unique and valuable tour, hopefully the first of more. Dates and venues below, full roster bios after the jump.

BUTT Interviewed Justin Bond
July 13, 2009
…and the interview has no sex questions!? I think JB pulled some queer rank!. It’s great though: Justin talks about why Kiki & Herb stopped performing, why Radical Faeries are important to him, his new EP Pink Slip finally getting released, and his first band Pantychrist. BUTT blog gets better and better all the time, I want to bury my face in it.

Queer Music Heritage’s Queercore History Podcast
July 13, 2009
Jon Ginoli, author and singer for Pansy Division could arguably have the most experiential, anecdotal and academic knowledge of queer punk’s history. So it’s really appropriate that there is a major interview and podcast with him about it over at Queer Music Heritage. QMH has always had the historical low down on the music made by GLBTs (check out their posts on Camp Records) and this “special” is justifiably long, at 8 hours, complete with the music, and additional interviews. Download and get your gay learn on. For you audio-phobes, there is also a transcription.

Totally Scored A MEN CD
July 13, 2009
I was DJ-ing at Wang’s and wasn’t able to see MEN‘s show at Berlin on Friday, but I did get to go and say hi after and totally scored a limited edition Demo CD that they are selling on tour. JD Samson and friends have not been stingy with the free downloads, so you should have these tracks by now. I will say though, that as a demo, these songs are tight. What I’m hearing is a realized political vision for a dance band, and one that trades Riot Grrl’s aggression for sweaty hip sways. I’m all about it, and when you take a moment for the lyrics, it’s empowerment, queer history and progressive reward. That, and the guitars are really giving it to you. Excited.

The Hidden Cameras: Origin Orphan
July 13, 2009
Judging by the free download from the new album by the Hidden Cameras, Joel GIbb might have reached his late period R.E.M. way faster than they did. “Walk On,” available for free here, is a heavily orchestrated drama showcase. I’m still longing for the up tempo early days, forgive me for being so nostalgic, this is summer! From the press release:
The Hidden Cameras have a new record coming out on September 22 through the good folks at Arts & Crafts called Origin:Orphan, as well as an EP for the song In The NA which features some great remixes. some dates in Eastern Canada at the end of this month to preview some of the material which are:
07/21/09 Wakefield, QC The Black Sheep Inn (Tickets available at: Ticketweb, Compact Music, Ottawa Folklore Centre)
07/23/09 Fredericton, NB The Capital Bar (Tickets available at: Backstreet Records, Read’s Newstands)
07/24/09 Charlottetown, PEI Baba’s lounge (Tickets at the door)
07/25/09 Halifax, NS Halifax Pride Festival (Free show, corner of Bell Rd & Ahern Ave)
On another live related note, Spanish fans and people in Barcelona this weekend should check out a rare solo appearance from Joel Gibb at Me Hotel Barcelona.
