Doug Ischar – The Belmont Rocks Were Gayer

July 29, 2009

Photobucket

Re-buzz is revving about Doug Ischar, a photographer who, among other things, photographed the naked, cruisey and HOT Belmont Ave. Rocks in the early 80′s. The removal of the limestone rocks is one of the many, many travesties committed by Mayor Daley (I think he is terrible for Chicago, and have NEVER voted for him). Ischar’s photos show a casual stank, a sexually rich atmosphere where men could chill and meet in the open, all the while enjoying our lake and THOSE FUCKING ROCKS. Ischar’s work got some attention over at thedishesaredone and he’ll also be getting his first showing of this entire collection at TPR pals Golden-Gallery. Entitled Marginal Waters, the show opening party is September 12th, sure to be a cruisey spot in and of itself. More info over at golden-gallery.org.

Shunda K Mixtape

July 26, 2009

Photobucket

Too often a band toils and troubles in the underground for years and when they finally start getting some attention, the drama boils over and they break up. Such is the case with Yo! Majesty, and while there is a supposed tour under the band name, it doesn’t look like Shunda K plans to attend. I really can’t imagine that, as her raps are what give the act it’s core. Her flow is instantly recognizable, highly sexual, and epitomizes my idea of what same gender loving women all over the world want. The mixtape featured Peaches, Drums of Death, Blaq Starr, Scream Club, and Slick Rick. Fuck that shit and download here. Track list after the jump.

Unikorn Porn

July 26, 2009

Photobucket

Local musician Arquimedes Hidalgo records under the name Unikorn Porn, and when that name was in the subject line, I was expecting the (unfortunately usual) overblown, angsty adolescent thing that usually contacts me for support. I might love the queering of the universe but just because you need to express yourself doesn’t mean you are talented. So what a sigh of relief it was when I listened over at his myspace and the understated, low-fi electro coming through my speakers was gentle and mature, slightly like Haunted House but not always screaming. The prevalence of free shareware and access to cheap recording equipement really pay off when people like Arquimedes take a crack at it. Unikorn Porn is also looking for people to play live shows with him, email him. Mp3′s are my picks, all demos, listen and download now!

Rachel Carns Surviving Cancer

July 26, 2009

Photobucket

Queercore enthusiasts know Rachel Carns by her turns in band like the Need, King Cobra and TWIN. I saw her perform with The Need opening for Rasputina and her energy was undeniable. Her beats were the rhythm to the guitarist’s brutal lashings, and it’s been since then that I’ve seen a two piece bring that kind of assualt. We are all happy that she’s survived, she’s now hoping that fans can alleviate some of the debt that incurs by making a donation from the Need’s sight here. And if you are looking for some memories, check out fuckyeahrachelcarns.

Bear Tumblrzzz

July 24, 2009

Finally getting down to this Bear Tumblr mega-post that I’ve been wanting to do, streaming Pépé Bradock’s slammin’ new house comp and basking in bear country. I’ve overheard some local cuties talking about “just discovering tumblr” and while I’m sure the visual format can be done well, it’s just another kind of blogging. CTRL+W33D is consistently bringing the funny, Three Frames has some mind boggling gifs, and Gif Party is a gay snark fest. I little poking around I found myself at all kinds of (some NSFW, so be careful!) blogs where hairy chubs are devoured and destined for the online pass around.

Photobucket

NY Mag had this nice fashion spread of a runway show by Walter Van Beirendonck, and all the models were sporting salt and pepper, mid-torso roundness and beards.

Photobucket

The Pick Up Bear likes it a little raunchy and geeky, and that’s fine with me.

Photobucket

Unlike its name, there is not too much shame over at Homo Shame.

I’ve blogged about Sean M. Johnson before and his love for the beard. He’s got some youtube vids of “Beard Love” and this t-shirt for sale over at My Soti.

Then of course, there are my default, go-to site for hot images and interesting musings:

Trans-Genre.net

July 21, 2009

Photobucket

Why am I so late on Trans-genre.net? I think this has taught me a lesson about going outside! From the ABOUT section: Trans-Genre was born in Oct. 07’ when FTM rocker’ A.J. Bryce decided it was time for an entertainment-based Trans-exclusive resource. Their mission is to promote the many talented people within the Transgender Performance/Art Community and are putting their money where their mouths are by putting out a 2nd compilation of transgendered artists. The first one, already sold out, was a huge success and now they are seeking submissions for another one, set to be released in January 2010. Deadline’s October 1st. More information at the submission page.

In Depth: The Critical Fierceness Grant

July 20, 2009

Photobucket

* Latham and Mel

The Critical Fierceness Grant is a twice-yearly microgrant awarded to a queer artist, funded by the money Chances Dances makes through its dance parties. Tonight, the 2nd winner of the Critical Fierceness Grant will be announced at their oldest haunt, Subterranean.  I’m so happy that the organizers have been able to make good on their promise and nurture the artistic queers in Chicago with this opportunity and I’ll be profiling the winner this week, so stay tuned for that. Before that exciting announcement, I’ve got an interview with 2 reps from Chances, Latham Zearfoss and Mel Racho. They graciously answered some questions I sent them about the grant, Chicago and its invaluable queers. Here are some quotes, (Mel is in BLUE and Latham is in GREEN, just cuz) read the full interviews after the jump.

…we still wanted to provide a venue for queer expression, formerly manifested in our themes, contests and channeled through our amazing former host Miss Teena Angst. Simultaneously we received an increase in the percentage of bar sales from the Subterranean, so suddenly we had this conundrum of how to spend the money now that we’d called it quits on theme nights (not a finite thing, just a general shift), while also re-negotiating Chances’ role as a creative outlet for the community. The Critical Fierceness Grant answered all of these problems while being an exciting endeavor for all of us…

…the Crit Fierceness works is perhaps what makes it stand out from other micro-grants that I am aware of (also sit on the city’s CAAP media panel), is the level of trust and connection we have with the artist and their work. The grant application process is comprehensive and finalists go through an outside board for review. Yet, at the day’s end, it is really cash money for the queer artist: here is money, get your work done, we believe in you and the project. This kind of faith is rare in most things that involve money – and, let’s face it increasingly rare in this world…
