It’s not new but it IS just in time for Summer. DJ Dre Skull’s Sissy Bounce Mix available over at XLR8R, this is a nice sample of the gay hip hop scene in New Orleans. Featuring Sissy Nobby, Big Freedia, and Katey Red. If you need some booty slamming nelly crunk, this is your stuff. Also check out the photo blog.

I was turned on Gay Beast just in time to catch their first hand made vinyl and am so happy I did. Their latest noise-focused LP, Second Wave, just came out on Skin Graft Records, whose alumni include Quintron, AIDS Wolf, Melt-Banana, and U.S. Maple. Tour dates after the jump, their show in Chicago on June 13th should be nice and grimy, seeing as though it’s at Automatic Collective’s space. Read the rest of this entry ?

That will change sooner than later, don’t worry. For now, Proun is a two cutie gays that distribute indie media out of their Rogers Park apartment and I bought an indie, urine-themed queer magazine from them at the CHIRP Record Fair. The date and location aren’t set, but for the last several months they have been scouting Chicago’s neighborhoods for a retail space. Not only will it house their impeccably curated magazines, music, books and art, but will also serve as a space for openings and performance. Their table at the CHIRP Record Fair had some of the illest, hottest, obscurest queer print mags I have ever seen, they are going to change Chicago’s indie media landscape, guaranteed. I’ll keep you posted, but if you know of any store front leads, shoot them an email at mailinglist((@))proun.us. Until then, run over to the site and check out the cool vids they have where you can cyber-flip through their magazine, look through their mail order catalogue, and if YOU have indie zines, arts, poetry and misc-crafts, ask them about their consignment stock and SELL YOUR SHIT!

Yes it’s Pride Month but if all you are looking forward to is the official Parade, then you are missing some city-folk action. The parade’s really for commercials and burbies, REALLY! The people behind the Latin@ Pride Picnic have a wonderful day in Humboldt Park in store for you. From 12pm – 6pm, there will be a clown, grills, dancers, drag kings/queens, and best of all: that Latin Spice my boyfriend loves. Latino/a people and allies from all over the city come to this for a day of celebration and connecting with our brown brethren. From the press release:
Why a Latin@ Pride event you ask?? Chicago’s Latina/Latino Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer communities, recognize the need and importance of celebrating and acknowledging our diverse identities and
cultures. Most Gay Pride celebrations held in Chicago have become more commercialized and lack education about Latino LGBTQ realities, such as health, immigration or violence, and few have non-commercialized sponsors.

It’s been a long time since Ssion‘s latest full length, Fool’s Gold came out, but you wouldn’t know it from their set last week opening for Fischerspooner. A stage reminiscent of their recent music videos, Cody Critcheloe full of charisma and working that dirty-ass fu man chu, band as hot as their own leather collars, not to mention the powerful Woman. I mean, the story behind the music really should have VH1 knocking on their door, too complicated for this post. But when it all boils down to an indie-queer scene that is looking for a band that speaks to them, knows the history, keeps the funk (read: B.O.) and has the songs to back it up, there is no one doing it better than Ssion right now. No one. This Thursday at Berlin is where it’s at, another win for Stardust.

Vocalo.org is a non-profit, public radio station serving the Southside of Chicago and Northwest Indiana (89.5FM WBEW Chesterton). We are working on a marriage-centered broadcast initiative for the month of June and we want to marry a couple, live on the air. Always wanting to slant things OUR way, I am focusing all my efforts around this to find a same-sex couple to take the plunge! I think it will be a compelling, tangible way to spark dialogue about what it means/doesn’t mean to have a state-sanctioned union. For the listeners, we would have a beautiful tale of romance that legally doesn’t mean anything, and we would use it as a platform to talk about why it is so important that we all should have the same freedoms. You can help the fight for equal rights, get showered with attention AND not have to deal with actual legal consequences of saying “I Do.” IT WILL BE FUN! Vocalo.org is providing the band, the cake, an officiator…all the fixins! All you have to do is tell us your story. Details for the contest are at vocalo.org/marryme , and you can shoot me an email at thinkpinkradio(((@)))gmail.com to get the inside scoop. You have to be in Chicago the week leading up to June 25th. SERIOUSLY LET’S DO IT.
