Chicago’s Rush University Hospital Good to the Gays

May 13, 2009

Photobucket

In case you are lucky enough to be able to choose where you get your healthcare, the Human Rights Campaign has just released their annual Healthcare Equality Index for 2009. Chicago’s very own Rush University Medical Center was the only hospital in the midwest to be given a perfect score on non discrimination policy in hospitals for all GLBT individuals. This is important to note for many reasons, but mostly because being in the hospital fucking SUCKS (how many times did I watch L.A. Confidential when I had appendicitis with complications? TOO MANY) and not having to worry about hate could be a key ingredient in your recovery. The full report is here.

This Friday: Sneak Preview of ‘Riot Acts’

May 12, 2009

Photobucket

Threat Level, the bi-monthly screening of queer short films, is happening this Friday and the theme is musicals. I’m not sure there is anything gayer than a trans-positive musical, so FUCKING HOORAY for that. A little more exciting though, is that this time, Threat Level is showing a sneak preview of Riot Acts: Flaunting Gender Deviance in Music Performance, the documentary about trans-musicians produced and directed by Actor Slash Model. This film is gearing up to be the first of its kind: we’ve seen docs about certain performers, but this film will capture the state of queer music today while tackling issues related to being transgendered. Chicago has always been a hotbed for queerness, but this film will further put us on the map.

Friday, May 15th
Elegant Mr. Gallery
1355 N. Milwaukee Ave 3rd Fl
Doors 7:30pm / Screening 8:00pm
$5-10 sliding scale

TransQueer Nation

May 11, 2009

Photobucket

Are you a member of the “For a Queer Positive Facebook” group? Ever wish you could find a trans-sensitive website for meeting people and finding out about events and happenings in your area? I just joined TransQueer Nation and so far, it seems to be a well-designed social networking site for our community and by our community. Highlighting grassroots movements, artists, books and active individuals are just a few of its strengths, and it also has a button so you can invite allies. NICE! Formerly, Transamerica, it is safe-guarded site for the transgendered / queer community and all “citizens” must be approved prior to joining. You can use the site to blog, post events, and vent! Join today and add me as a friend! Check out founders Tristan and Sicily below talking about TQ Nation:

Photobucket

SO happy that this week will be packed with banjee-bass, dubstep, hip hop, R & B, Freestyle and house, all courtesy of NYC homothug, cutie and TPR pal Kingdom. A prolific DJ and producer to say the least, he’s been having successful residencies all over his home town and three consecutively hot mixtapes (that I can think of), Chicago is in for a treat. First, he’s got a slot this Thursday at Berlin’s Stardust, then he’s headlining over at Bouncement, a fresh group of energetic party starters that have been taking Chicago’s late night scene to sHtreets. $7 cover at Lava Lounge, but you and a friend can get in for free by email me at thinkpinkradio((@))gmail.com and telling me why you love homothugs. It’s that easy!

Chicago Dyke March Looking For Performers

May 7, 2009

Photobucket
* TPR in action at last year’s Dyke March, you can listen to the audio piece here.

I can’t believe it’s that time of year again! Last year’s Dyke March was probably the best one I have ever been to; the move from Andersonville to Pilsen was a complete, transformative success and the march meant SO MUCH MORE. If you are a performing artist and are interested in participating in the after-march festivities, read the call out below and get in touch! ALSO, there is still a poll over at the Dyke March Myspace where you can vote for the location of this year’s march. So far, Humboldt Park is in the lead with 32% of the vote, Downtown is a close 2nd with 27%. Get over there and make your voice heard!

Chicago DM is looking for talented spoken word artists, musicians, comedians, dancers, drummers, any kind of performers for the rally after the march. We’ve had theater, burlesque, poetry….Anything that is queer, EMPOWERING, and entertaining can find a place at the rally.

*QUALIFICATIONS:*

Individual artists, (for groups- at least 2-3 of the artists) must be LGBTQQ womyn/ genderqueer/ trans/ gender non conforming identified.

*Submission Guidelines:*
Please send poems, lyrics, or any written performances as a word document attachment to the email below. If available also email your website/blog/Myspace page. Also please keep in mind that all material performed at the rally must go along with Chicago DM mission. RuPaul’s Drag Race Casting

May 6, 2009

But really, the big news besides the (gimmicky) vote for the next contestants roster on the website, is that there will be another season. If you didn’t happen to catch it, you can still watch each episode at Logoonline.com and it is really worth your time. TRUST. The reason? It’s like Project Runway with drag queens. Sure, most of the contestants were not that much better than your average reality competition (Nina Flowers, Bebe Zahara Benet, and Ongina excepted). You had the insufferable, the tragic, the naive, the bitch and charity case and what not. No, the real excitement about Drag Race is that RuPaul kept it real, making sure that portions of the show were dedicated to our drag fore-mothers, included vogue balls as a key moment in history, and finally in the reunion, made sure to acknowledge hate and discrimination in a powerful blow up scene that had me crying. See, RuPaul knew this would be his chance to step it up, and among all the genuine fun that was had (it was…so, so godamn fun) there was some realness thrown in. Being a drag queen is tough shit–I was just talking to a friend who was watching season 4 of project runway and lamented that she couldn’t love Christian Siriano as much as she wanted to because of his derogatory use of the word “tranny” and how he went on to say that “drag queens were the white trash of the gay community.” I know that Siriano is young and dumb, but he did influence a lot of young gay boys to go around saying tranny this and tranny that, I can’t imagine the impression he left about drag queens. This is the kind of casual ignorance abound within our own community, and Drag Race is here to make you WALK IT OFF, GURL. Anyhow, I cannot wait for what Rupaul has in store for season 2, let’s hope they take some of that vaseline off the lens and have more episodes! And if you are a drag performer, make a vid and show off your Chicago-style tuck!

Two Videos Depicting Cute, Gay, Dancing Asian Boys

May 5, 2009

Oh man, thank the gay stars for our new lives, constantly blogging and taping our every move for the world to see. Obvs, most people are boring (despite what Oprah says), but sites like this pink-your-brain are in charge of showcasing the people who are not boring: the divas in the rough, if you will. So it is with my pleasure that I post two high quality videos of cute, gay Asian boys dancing. They both have a certain degree of artful flair, the first in concept, the other in execution. I almost can’t believe the gaysian realness on display here, just more proof that visibility is power!

Mondo Homo Got Justin Bond

May 5, 2009

Photobucket

Now in its 3rd year, Atanta Georgia’s Mondo Homo is bigger and better than ever. It is, after all, “The South’s queer art, spoken word, dance party, hip-hop-electro clash, politics, film, BBQ, circus arts, theater, music, burlesque, social action diversity-lovin’ festival of fun queer space.” I’ve been a mid-westerner all my life, but something tells me the South needs more fests like this. Happening May 21st through 25th, this is looking to be your next Spring Gaycation. AND, the new press release says they have booked none other than Justin Bond! He hardly tours, so this is extra-special and the South will never be the same again! With dance parties galore, I’d be there with some southern fried okra niblets and a mint julep or three. Congrats Mondo Homo! See the full line up after the jump.

‘Trans Plantations’ at Depaul

May 5, 2009

Photobucket

The month of May at Depaul University is going to be jam packed with events by and for LGBTQ community, brought to us by The Office LGBTQA Student Services. I was working some retail this past weekend and I asked a woman wearing a Gay Depaul T-Shirt if she was attending any of the events. She said that she was and that everyone was excited about Trans Plantations, a one-woman play that “explores her lifelong struggle with cultural and sexual identity as a New York-born Puerto Rican uprooted from her Bronx barrio and transplanted to rural Connecticut at age 7.” I emailed actor Janis Astor del Valle for clarification — this particular work does not address trans identity. Instead it focuses on what it meant being a queer Latina in rural America and how that struggle has been shaped over the years.

Other events on the calendar focus on education and awareness about sensitivity, safety, legal issues, addiction and minority issues. Not bad for a catholic university! See the full calendar of events here.
