IML Day One

May 22, 2009

Honestly, there is no better gay holiday weekend than International Mr. Leather. So open and welcoming to all stripes, leather and not. Yes, it is male-centered, but the few women that are there are having a great time, not at all needing to worry about nasty trolls following them around. I go every year to the market, BUT this year I am official media, and will be live blogging the actual International Mr. Leather contest, as well as any and all happenings while I am there. I’m def gonna get my boots shined and try and interview my shiner, continue to stalk David Mason, and try and take more photos with gay celebs. Be sure to follow me @thinkpinkradio. Here are my tweets from Day 1:

So Friday afternoon is always a little snoozy at the market. People are still arriving from out of town and the vendors have no “schpiel – fatigue” and are giving the hard sell. Luckily, I was with Mistress Crimson, and as you can see above, she’s lots of fun. We had good conversations about hanky codes and the appeal of jock straps, I def got a good look at a hot Anderson Cooper-type with a blue hanky tucked on the right, and WOW is all we could say. First photo was this bizzaro table that I still don’t know what was going on. It was like an all-you-can-kink-garage sale:

After Crimson tried on a satin corset, we turned the corner and both of our jaws dropped:

Photobucket

WTF is that? It’s The Alien Egg. You can be born from it:

Photobucket

Yeah. Never, ever seen that before. I think at this point, we ran into TPR pal S.I.R , who works at the Leather Archives & Museum, he was on his way to perform:

I did make sure to pass by the Slick It Up table about 7 times, but I was determined to not say anything to David Mason. Not Yet. I couldn’t believe it when my friend Joey had tried on one if Slick It Up’s better suits and I wasn’t even there, UGH:

Crimson needed to meet up with her fellow dom Troy, and Troy needed to buy a flogging device. She needed someone to “help” “try” “it out” and while there is no photo (ha, no, sorry) I was flogged for the first time today. It was nice. Thanks for the freebie, Troy! It was then that my girls had to leave and so I showed Joey around the market (he ain’t from ’round these parts). That’s when this happened and I freaked the fuck out:

So, I know Dan Savage’s feminism is lacking, and he is a flawed man. BUT I have been reading Savage Love since I was 14 or 15 and I have never missed a week. NOT ONE, and honestly Dan Savage guided me through my gayness and with his help I am the proud and open gay-rod I am today. ANYWAY, I totally bumbled my way through telling him how much I loved him and he was gracious and kind and wanted to remember the letter I wrote him (which he sent me a personal response to). UGH FUCKING UGH. I was sweaty and giddy after that.

I gotta be Stinky Pinky, playing the best indie, electro and disco you’ve ever heard, tonight at Wang’s, so no more IML tonight. But I’ll be at the official events all weekend with a recap each day. Look here for the entire schedule. I’m going to be a swine flu-sie!

Stay tuned!

The Young & The Restless’ Queerness

May 22, 2009

Photobucket

When openly out actress Clementine Ford of the L Word fame joined the Young and the Restless last month to take over the role of Mackenzie Browning, the show also announced that one of their characters was coming out. Would it be the recently returning character of Mackenzie? Apparently not. Bravo for Y&R for not typecasting Ms. Ford, and choosing resident legal eagle hottie Rafael “Rafe” Torres to be the character to non-chalantly come out during a random lunch scene. Now with Rafe joining the small daytime ranks of queerness, Y&R has the chance to write a compelling story about a character who just happens to be gay. The queer presence continues to grow on Y&R  with the surprise return of presumed-dead Phillip Chancellor III, played by openly out actor Thom Bierdz! Fan favorite Bierdz rejoins the soap after a twenty year absence still looking as sexy as ever! Looks like the Young and the Restless is becoming the queer soap to beat, both in front and behind the cameras!

Why It’s Good That Adam Lambert Lost

May 21, 2009

Photobucket

Full disclosure: this was the first year I ever watched American Idol. It was happenstance, where friends that I like and don’t get to see very often would get together for a home cooked meal and watch it. Indeed, that shizz is not me, with the constant advertorials and banal songs. I did wind up calling it “A Midol,” but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thrilled with Adam Lambert being in the top 2…and more thrilled when he lost. See, these shows fucking suck. The winners have way too many contractual obligations, and really can’t do anything on their own terms once the tiara is placed on their heads. With a mid-season non-controversy over photos of Lambert as a drag queen and making out with guys, the boy’s flat ironed outness was as refreshing as stepping out of a public lou with George Michael. Is that why he lost? Maybe. Was he actually really weird for an idol finalist? Yeah. I mean I loved Allison more than anyone, but her brand of latinaternative has been pretty normal since Pink and Gwen Stefani. AND THEN, the song with KISS. A brilliant resolution to an oddball run–bedazzled eyes, crazy-ass shoulder pads and platforms were daring for the solo, then legitimized in the hearts of straight America with KISS. Lambert lost this vote, but won a chance to be a super star on his own terms. The gays WON this one. We have a new Freddie Mercury, a safe Rob Halford, a gay pop sensation in a queeny Axl Rose. Something to be happy about for sure.

Homofrecuencia’s 5th Annual Queer Prom

May 19, 2009

Photobucket

I tell this story a lot, and here goes another: My boyfriend in highschool dumped me because he was straight, and then started dating my best friend (a girl). When I found out they were going to senior prom together, I WISHED that I could have scrambled up some sort of revenge-date. A totally hot, totally unknown, totally older college boy to bring and have a Queer as Folk moment. Instead, a group of friends and I got dolled up, went for vegetarian dinner in the basement of a Harri Krishna Temple and went bowling. So WHOLESOME!

I WISH that my day had Homofrecuencia‘s Queer Prom, now in its 5th year. Successful runs with happy YOOF and do-gooding volunteers, this has turned into an annual gala for our community’s children and young adults. So damn cool, Chicago is the best fucking city. This year, the theme is “Amor sin Fronteras” (Love without borders), and comes from the idea that LGBTQ youth should have spaces where they are encouraged to express themselves, and not be limited by fear of violence for attending their school’s prom with a same-sex date or for transgressing gender expectations.

The night is happening Friday May 29 at the National Museum of Mexican Art, 1842 W. 19th Street. Tickets for this year’s Queer Prom are (by donation) $10.00 (Students/ youth), $25.00+ donations (Allies/ supporters). You can Volunteer by clicking here.

If you work at a community organization that provides resourceses relevant to LGBTQ youth, please let us know if you want to save a space at the community resource area at the prom by clicking here.

Tell others about the event by forwarding this e-mail, or inviting them through Facebook here!

Win Tickets To BLOWOFF This Saturday!

May 18, 2009

Photobucket

Was it coincidence? Hell no. Bob Mould (of Hüsker Du and Sugar) and Richard Morel are bringing their electro-rock-dance project to Chicago this weekend, just in time for IML! Mould started BLOWOFF in Washington D.C. as a monthly queer dance party and performance project over 5 years ago and has been a hugely successful collaboration for the two musicians. Mould brings the rock element and Morel brings the electronic beats, and BLOWOFF has had jam packed nights at Homo-A-Go-Go, The Folsom Street Fair, and now Chicago for Internaional Mr. Leather. The show is this Saturday at Metro Chicago, and if you’d like to win a free pair of tickets to the show, email me at thinkpinkradio((@))gmail.com and tell me why you love leather (or P-leather, if you are vegan). Emails must be received no later than Thursday, May 21st.

IML This Weekend!

May 18, 2009

Photobucket

OH MAN IT’S MY FAVORITE WEEKEND OF THE YEAR. International Mr. Leather is happening this (Memorial Day) weekend, and if you don’t already have leather-themed brunches planned then I don’t know what to tell you. Literally 50,000 + leather men and fetishists come to Chicago for this. TRY and go out this weekend and you’ll see the best tourists EVER.

It’s not just a beauty pageant-like contest where hairy men dressed in their best hide compete in categories like “Pecs and Stage Presence,” interview, physique and attire. It’s also a celebration of atypical body types and the freedom of sexual expression that a lot of other countries in the world do not have. By the end of the weekend, the winner cries, gets a leather sash, roses and the title of Internation Mr. Leather. For the rest of the year they get to roam around the planet getting all the booty they desire. And if the IML contest is a test for tops, The Mr. Bootblack Competition is the best of bottoms! Men and boys, all subs, compete to see who is the best at polishing boots. Serious.

If all of that seems a little formal to you, then the least you can do is enjoy the Leather Market. A craft fair for fetishists, the Market is rooms and rooms of enticing-to-frightening wares sold at reasonable prices, and it’s all about the people watching. One good moment was encountering a man in a leather body bag, and it wasn’t until my 2nd look that I realized all you could see was his scrotum hanging out, all while a “sales person” was electro-stimulating his man-sac. NICE.

A full schedule of events is located at www.imrl.com and most events are happening at the Chicago Hilton, 720 South Michigan Avenue, 312-922-4400.

Mirror Mirror

May 13, 2009

Photobucket
Without too much hoopla, but a lot of quality under its belt, Cochon Records has silently become THEE best queer record label. With a roster that includes (the much missed) Veronica Lipgloss and the Evil Eyes, Gravy Train!!!!, Hawnay Troof, Paradise Island and Stink Mitt, fans of queer music best take notes here. [Side note: I remember interviewing the lead singer of V. Lipgloss outside of Cal's Liqours in Chicago's Loop, and when I asked her about her DOUBLE BLACK EYE, she told me that she was trying to tame a lion]. Having just celebrated their 10th anniversary (covered nicely by Brown Down Crown), I was doing a little digging and got intrigued by Mirror Mirror, a really attractive five-piece from Brooklyn with a penchant for hastening off the shoulder cut off t-shirts and uncategorizeable tunes. Check out the vid for “Eugene” below and look for their new record soon enough.

Miranda July’s Hallway

May 13, 2009

So it’s about a month old already, and I know that is an internet credential lifetime but Spring has been keeping me outside and the storms tonight are just what the doctor ordered for a quiet night alone with the world at my finger tips. The above 5.5 minute video by Miranda July is SO worth your fabulous time, as how often do we get quality programming that was intended for a free upload? Not that often. “The Hallway,” a 125 foot hallway – English in one direction / Japanese in the other is what we are walking through here. From the Yokohama Triennale 2008, this piece is made available courtesy of Hara Museum. I like that this video could wind up being a nice segue from July’s writing back to another movie (AH HA! I just went to ye olde imdb.com and saw that she is writing and directing a new feature-length film called “Satisfaction,” wherein “a young couple’s relationship is put to the test when one of them embarks on an ecological mission” thank you internet!) “The Hallway” really adds to July’s catalog: it takes her keen sense of narrative and turns it inside out. While you are walking through it, the dream it paints is consistently grounded by the hand written time line. Never sparring her trademark humor and earnestness, you leave the hallway possibly just having  made some decisions about where to go next. LOVING it. Be sure to take a look at the mock-blog comments over at her site.

New Shondes Video

May 13, 2009

It’s been a while since The Shondes released their album, “The Red Sea,” and when their tour wrapped up in November, I wasn’t sure when we’d hear from these out queer jews again. A happy surprise it was when I saw they released a music video for “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” one of their best. I think if you took some Amanda Palmer, added a little grunge, and toss around some orchestration, you’d get The Red Sea. Let’s hope this means a new record sooner than later.
