Office Broke Up

January 10, 2009

Photobucket

It was just a little while ago that I was looking forward to the next record from Chicago’s cutest, gayest indie-pop band, Office. The hooks were expanding and it seemed like ambition was getting Scott Masson and Co. some much deserved attention. Oh well, as they say, cuz some time over the new year, Office quietly broke up and released their last record for free. Mecca, the final document is available over at Scott’s blog. The supreme Beach Boys/Scissor Sisters sound on the album tells me Mr. Masson won’t be gone for too long.

Klumpfisk Had A Three Way

January 9, 2009

Photobucket

Obviously, I like fun with DJ names. Klumpfisk is a name I am still trying to figure out and his musical style is also outside of easily classifiable. He’s definitely a “mild to wild” kind of remixer and has posted tracks from Lykke Li, Peaches, Peter Bjorn and John, and The Magnetic Fields’ song “Three Way” on his myspace. Don’t just go looking for bangers here, some of his remixes can be better tailored for headphones. Head on over , download his tracks and give this Swede some love!

TransGriot: Why Her Community Doesn’t Like “Queer”

January 7, 2009

Photobucket

One of my part time jobs is at a really cool, progressive public radio station, vocalo.org. We are constantly trying to have dialogue and present both sides of issues, and one that comes up a lot is over the word “queer.” Us younger peeps use it, my boss says his friends hate it. I always respond with “well those people probably like the word ‘lover’,” and then only the younger people laugh. Anyhow, I was looking over the nominees for the Weblog Awards (ahem, 2009!!) and found TransGriot, “News, opinions, commentary, history and a little creative writing from an African-American transwoman about the world around her.” She had this post specifically about the word “queer” and why she doesn’t like it. I always insist that you should call people whatever they want to be called, but I do disagree with TransGriot on one point: her dictionary argument. Since when do we need a dictionary to use words? I make up words all the time, remember last week’s list spectaculanza?  I don’t think we all need to use the same words to describe ourselves, but we do need to speak the same language. Loving this dialogue, head over to TransGriot and give her some love.  If you have a particular thing about what you want to be referred as, make sure you let others know!

CHANNELING : Queer Film on Tour

January 6, 2009

Photobucket

Chicago-based film makers Ethan A White and Latham Zearfoss are taking their latest project on the road and are coming to a town near you. Full dates and details after the jump, and check out their facebook page and blog. From the press release:

CHANNELING is an entryway into the spirit realm and the queer body politic: a loose catalogue of experimental moving image work that calls up the ghosts of the past and the specters of the future. The intent of the program is to re-imagine film and video as occult technologies that allow us to connect with the bodies, experiences, and emotions that are often invisible–ghostly, even–in everyday life. The works in the program take a personal approach in dealing with the political and historical problems that haunt the queer experience: the AIDS pandemic (Renwick, DiStefano), the body in transition (Montague), the idealized nuclear family (Pena, Robinson), and the narrow cultural standards of desirability (EMR, Moulton). CHANNELING presents emerging and established artists critically engaging with these concerns on their own campy, poetic, sexual, humorous, and even utopian terms, using a variety of aesthetic approaches such as digital video, homemade effects, saturated 8mm, home movies, animation, green screen, and more.

Vanessa Renwick – 9 is a Secret (2002, 6:00, video)
Elliot Montague – Well Dressed (2006, 10:00, Super 8mm on video)
Shana Moulton – Whispering Pines #7 (2006, 5:00, video)
Michael Robinson – Carol Anne is Dead (2008, 7:30, video)
EMR (Math Bass & Dylan Mira) – Somethings Gonna Soon (2008, 4:00, video)
Aay Preston-Myint – Some Ghosts (2007, 2:00, video)
Jillian Pena – Compromise (2005, 10:00, video)
John Di Stefano – (tell me why): The Epistemology of Disco (1990, 24:00, video)

Total Running Time: ~68 min.

Bound to Struggle

January 5, 2009

Photobucket

Bound to Struggle is a Chicago-based zine founded by Simon Strikeback of Actor Slash Model. It is attempting to be a place ” where kink and radical politics meet.” Volume 3 was just released and is available for purchase for $5 dollars. This zine is classicly printed and distributed via regular mail, and accepts submissions for content. The myspace asks “Does radical politics inform how you do kink? Has kink taught you ways to be a better activist or political thinker? Can the non-physical mechanics of kink (notions of consent, etc.) effect the nitty-gritty mechanics of an action bloc or campaign fight? Do conscientious ideas of environmentalism, anti-sexism, racism, able-ism, classism, gender-ism, etc. figure into the negotiating process of your scenes or relationships? How do you talk about power? Where do these ideas meet action and how do they affect our lives?” Head on over, the table of contents is listed in the blog section of the myspace.

Stinky Pinky’s Best Music of 2008

January 3, 2009

Photobucket

That picture above is from when I was in D.C. in front of the Supreme Court Building. The people behind me are pro-life protestors and I was not about to respect them. Here is my bloated year end list for 2008, another great year for music. 2000 and fine will continue to bring more queerness (and more podcasts, I promise) to these here pages PLUS more music…from me. Already hard and work at very happy with it. Thank you to all the blogs, friends, haters and readers for supporting TPR, helping us raise our readership to 5 times what it was our first month. Cheers to you and yours!

Top Ten Albums (in order)

1) Cut Copy-In Ghost Colours
The new New Order is here, this record successfully made an album sound like a DJ’s mixtape.

2) Beach House-Devotion
Epic hooks made even more remarkable by the band’s barebones set up, not to mention Victoria Legrand’s bewitching vocals.

3) TV on the Radio-Dear Science,
We can finally see their influences flowing out on their “dance” record.

4) Santogold-S/T
Effortless pop from all ends of the spectrum, complete with risks and oddball decisions.

5) Crystal Castles-S/T
This is the most punk thing I have seen this year.

6) The Walkmen-You & Me
Dylan on the beach sounds organic, romantic, and breezy.

7) Hercules and Love Affair-S/T
Disco, pansexuality, dancing, Antony.

8 ) Ssion-Fool’s Gold
The successful alchemy in Cody Critcheloe’s vision for Ssion has transformed his band from scrappy art-punks to edgey, queer, feminist sex beasts.

9) Matmos-Supreme Balloon
What might be their most narrow in concept freed them; what a wild ride this record is.

10) Portishead-Third
Rising from their self-imposed ashes, a stark, goth affair that I would say is Portishead’s folk record, if you can imagine.

Honorable Mention
Lykke Li-Youth Novels
This girl is so young (and has a lot to learn) but she was throwing fierce, iconic punches from the underground on up; all the alternagays are fucking into it.

Lez BoBo The Clown’s Top Ten Things Lesbians and Clowns Have in Common

January 1, 2009

Photobucket

On this slow going new year’s day, Lez Bo Bo The Clown is here to let you laugh your hang over away. If you live in Chicago and are of the lesbian persuasion, surely Lez Bo Bo has terrified you at some party.

10. Ridiculous hair-dos
9. Children fear them
8. An inability to dance without looking foolish
7. Using humor to mask social ineptitude
6. A tendency to work with animals
5. Big clunky shoes
4. A bad relationship with make-up (clowns go too far, and lesbians just don’t go at all)
3. A lack of fashion sense
2. Getting off by squirting people with their flowers
1. Both get pie in the face
