Hunx

November 28, 2008

I am really happy that after all this time, former Gravy Train!!!! homo Hunx has his solo project up and running. Two seven inches have been pressed, the new music video (above) is pretty cute, and the bloc of songs over at the myspace are all very good. Songwriting credits are listed to NOBUNNY, and if you go over to his space, the Ramones/Screeching Weasel influence is all over his shit. Anyhow, you might think this is Pansy Division all over again, but so far these songs are just girl-group enough to make me jump on the bus. The 7″ for “You Don’t Like Rock N’ Roll” has scratch-off cover art, and you know I got one!!

Dope Jams Has The Gay Bootlegs

November 27, 2008

Photobucket

Prediction: the digital age will make tangible media more expensive and valuable, but also better. People will take a second day and think about it more–do I really need to make this? Is is worth the space it’s taking up? In addition to weeding out crappy ideas, the omnipresent screen will also make nostalgia more selective. Dopejams.net is a vinyl distributor of sorts, maybe you can even call it a record label. Whatever it is, it specializes in unofficial reissues, and they are keen enough to have a little focus on the gay. The store has releases on “Gay Records,” a subsidiary, perhaps; 12″s by Arthur Russell and Sylvester; the website even has a preview stream for each track so you know what you are getting into. Record collectors, beware: you are about to spend some cash.

Simian Mobile Disco Remixed Deerhunter

November 26, 2008

Photobucket

It’s been a while since we talked about Bradford Cox and his main gig, Deerhunter. Their new record, Microcastle, is a difficult, swoony haze, and their signature buried pop is harder to find. I guess the guys in Simian Mobile Disco were longing for some danceability in a Deerhunter track, and went back to the band’s last record, Cryptograms for the song “Octet.” Here we have a nice rendering, with the weird Cox loops and echo intact, all the while the bass is fine and beat is in front. Nice.

This T-Shirt Available from Etsy

I am happy about this, to be sure. I do wonder, however, how many of these gays I would ever befriend. You know, like hang out with and stuff. Not that it matters, so far The Biggest O has been going the way of forceful pragmatic, and I am loving it. Anyway, The Washington Blade has the story.

Towleroad Has the Scoop For Evanston’s ‘Milk’ Protest

November 24, 2008

I’ll always call out Towleroad on its ad pandering and failure to check its hateful comments, but they scooped Evanston’s protest at the Century Cinema this past weekend. From the looks of it, there was a good turn out, and “No More Mr. Nice Gay” is really spreading. Thank gay-loving-god!

Critical Fierceness

November 22, 2008

Photobucket

One of the many reasons that Chicago is a great place to be if you are queer is because of its supportive community. We are always looking for the new hotness, the outness-the fierceness. Chances Dances has been a monthly staple in Wicker Park for 3 years now, third Mondays have never been the same since this space for young, flashy gays became part of Chicago’s scene. The organizers are looking to broaden the scope of their reach, and are starting with an arts fund. The Chances Dances Critical Fierceness Grant will award a monetary prize and provide a viewing space for one lucky winner every month. Grants will be given to emerging queer artists. This is very exciting, the first deadline for applications is December 31st, to be awarded in February. Full press release after the jump.

*CHANCES*
Third Mondays at Subterranean, 10p-2a
2011 W. North Ave., Chicago
Always FREE!

Milk-Don’t See It at Cinemark Theatres!

November 20, 2008

Photobucket

The group No Milk for Cinemark is organizing a boycott all screenings of Milk at Cinemark theatres.

The CEO of Cinemark Theaters (Century Theaters, CinéArts and Tinseltown) made large donations ($9999) to ‘Yes on Prop 8′ and still want to profit off Harvey Milk’s legacy. This is wrong, and we cannot support it. Head over to their website and find out where else you can see this movie! Join the facebook group here.

If 1,000 of us commit to see MILK at a competitor’s theater instead of Cinemark, at an average cost of $10 per ticket, that’s $10,000 of lost revenue.

Against a Trans Narrative

November 19, 2008

Photobucket

In light of the recent execution-style murder of Duanna Johnson, I want to remind everyone that as hard as it is for gays and lesbians, it is much, much tougher for the trannies. While we fight for marriage, a lot of trans-folk are just trying get acknowledgment. It is with great sadness that I read about Johnson’s tragic death, not too much else to say about it. Against A Trans Narrative is a film by Jules Rosskam:

Sitting somewhere between fiction, non-fiction, and experimental film genres. It is as fragmented and complicated as its subject matter. The audience is presented with disparate narrative, home videos, dramatic reenactments, poetry and round-table conversations where people discuss their reactions to the issues presented in the film.

The film analyzes the construction of trans-masculine communities inside the larger cultural framework.

Sneak Preview/Fundraiser for the film this Thursday:

NOVEMBER 20TH
6-9 PM. FILM ROW CINEMA 1104 S. WABASH, 8TH FLOOR
TICKETS $20-50 (SLIDING SCALE). STUDENT AND LOW-INCOME TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR $15

This Friday: John Cameron Mitchell Spins a Queer Dance

November 19, 2008

Photobucket

Don’t even think about missing this one. John Cameron Mitchell is in town this week for a few guest speakings, alma-mater-type things at Northwestern! None other than Hedwig himself and the writer-director of Shortbus will be spinning a queer dance this Friday on Northwestern’ campus. This event is free and open to the public-bring your friends and schlep over to NU for what is sure to be a rare appearance by the JCM. Imagine my surprise when Think Pink got an email from John (first names here, people) asking about a co-dj. Kicking myself for not being able to, I quickly shot a message to my favorite DJ in Chicago, Reaganomix. Head over to this college dorm cafeteria and fondly remember the most awkward cruising of your life!
