Dyke March in Pilsen!!

June 8, 2008

Who doesn’t love a gay parade? I can get drunk with my friends and laugh at the ridiculous commercialization and empty political gestures as much as anyone, but after a while my inner activist wants to get real. That’s where the Dyke March comes in, Chicago’s only true organized, annual protest that embodies the current queer struggle. For 2008, the organizers decided to move the march to Pilsen, a south side-ish neighborhood that has a huge Latino population. For those just joining us, the Dyke March has always been in Andersonville, an almost fully gentrified gayborhood on the north side. When they first announced the move, people felt a little uneasy about leaving their comfort zone, and quite frankly some inner racism came out. A change like this is a perfect way to return the march to political action and create a dialogue about race, class and safe space. Dyke March Chicago takes place Saturday, June 28th at 1pm, step off is at 2:30pm. They are currently looking for performers for the post show at Harrison Park, check out their myspace for updated info.
