New CSS Song/Album

April 29, 2008

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Not as dance ready but certainly as stage dive insisting as the well loved tracks from their first record, the first tack from CSS‘s upcoming record Donkey, is making the rounds. “Rat is Dead (Rage).” After the amicable, noble loss of bassist Ira Trevisan, the sound of the band was going to shift at least a little. Donkey will be out on July 22 on Sub Pop, current tour dates after the jump.

Kevin Townley: Water Colors and Electric Fiction

April 28, 2008

New York based artist Kevin Townley has been coming to Chicago to record his debut record with none other than Bobby Conn. His band, Electric Fiction has a call and response garage sound that wouldn’t be out of place opening for the Rocky Horror Picture show. Check out their songs on myspace and be on the look out for their first release on these here pages.

In the meantime, Townley has been dabbling with water colors, a seemingly mild choice for someone so full of personality. His site, They Don’t Know About Us is full of images and self portraits with lines that could come right out of one of his songs. A bleak outlook permeates the divide between his characters, but he keeps you on your toes with wit and drag queen-y flair.

Matmos is Coming

April 25, 2008

Photobucket

Longtime listeners/short term readers how freaky Think Pink Radio is about Matmos. With May 6th, the release date for their new record fast approaching, little trickles of mp3′s have been digitally making way for excitement and pants peeing. Supreme Balloon being an entire album made from synthesizers, it’s bound to be great headphones music, carnivals, psychedelic BBQ’s, and traveling. Thankfully, Drew Daniel and MC Schmidt are web savvy enough to be ok with people already having some of the songs. Stereogum has “Unbeliever,” a track that will be a B-side or on an import version or something (you can get it if you subscribe to their newsletter), meanwhile “Rainbow Flag” is available on Matador’s Matmos page, and “Polychords” is one of the tracks on the new Matador MP3 sampler “Intended Play: Spring 2008″. You can get “Polychords” below and “Supreme Balloon” at the previous post but as a courtesy, head over to Stereogum for that B-side, buy Supreme Balloon from Matador, and support their upcoming tour. Dates after the jump.

Earth Day Special: Queer Links Annoying and Not

April 22, 2008

For better or for worse, this vid has been making the rounds…

The Advocate’s current issue is about being green, with articles about Rufus Wainwright’s new green initiative, some queers working for an eco-friendly world, and GM’s new electric car.

GaycityUSA has this easy guide to stopping junkmail.

Gay.com has a slightly brainless list of eco-friendly drinks.

Skin is selling these eco-conscious, organic T’s for the queers that need to wear slogans.

This Lonely Lesbian bought a flowering plant.

Kathy asks, what can lesbians do about earth day? As it turns out, her suggestions apply to everyone.

The Tao of Gay is an annoying guide to recycling men.

And finally, SCARY!!! Earthday.gov makes it seem like the earth is fine, just fine the way it is.

National Day of Silence Is This Friday

April 22, 2008

Photobucket

On Friday LGBTQ students (and allies) will be silent in classrooms across the country, as part of GLSEN’s National Day of Silence. This year’s events are being held in honor of the tragic murder of Lawrence King, the Oxnard queer student who was murdered in February by a classmate because of his sexuality and gender expression.

Last week I was shocked to hear that a total of 27 LGBTQ organizations like National Center for Lesbian Rights, Lambda Legal, and the Transgender Law Project are all fighting for Lawrence’s murderer to be tried as a juvenile. The organizations claim that their reasoning is tied to working towards a total climate change, which will make schools safer for LGBTQ youth. While I understand their strategy, I think it’s important for us as a community not to forget that a 14 year old got a gun, took it into a classroom, and shot a queer student in the back of the head. Had the murder been less calculated, less premeditated, I might have an easier time siding with the organizations. I just have a hard time believing that the killer didn’t know exactly what he was doing. The groups are right however that sending him to jail will not bring Lawrence King back, however I believe that it would send a message.
