The Advocate has reported a story of truly ponderous proportions. A trans man and his wife have are having a baby in Oregon, and due to various factors, the husband is carrying the child.
“Our situation sparks legal, political, and social unknowns. We have only begun experiencing opposition from people who are upset by our situation. Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognize Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender.”
I am so inspired by this couple. To choose to live the life and have the family you always dreamed of in the face of a world still not ready to accept you is bold and pioneering. Just goes to show that a family is so many things and we must accept the infinite permutations it can come in.
