Disney Gone Mild

Right wing homophobes have managed to get gay marriage on the ballot in Florida, not that this is a huge surprise as the state has never been known for it’s progressive politics or love of the LGBTQ community. That said, it is the wording of their proposed constitutional amendment which is particularly frightening. Were it to pass, the state of Florida would mandate that “no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized.” This means, that civil unions and domestic partnerships would be out the window, leaving queer Floridians lacking any ability to protect their families. If the Florida amendment passes it also means that queer tourists would not have their relationships recognized or protected were an emergency to arise. I know that my partner and I won’t be planning any jaunts down Disney World if the constitutional amendment were to pass, and I imagine we aren’t the only queer family to feel it would be too risky to visit the state.
