Queer folks in Oregon are celebrating as Monday (February 4th) at 8am domestic partnerships will begin to be issued to couples across the state. This is an issue near and dear to my heart, as my partner and I moved from Oregon to NYC a year ago, and my moms continue to live in the state (and will be getting domestic partnered on Monday).
A full press release is available from Basic Rights Oregon; the ruling came down Friday afternoon to the shock of many in the community. A constitutional amendment banning gay marriage passed in 2004, in reaction to Multnomah County issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples earlier in the year. This exciting domestic partnership legislation was scheduled to take effect January 1st of this year, however it stalled in court proceedings by opponents until Friday when a judge issued that they should go forward.
