The issue which first made the press in the Wall Street Journal, and then was later republished in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports on a fascinating case of the West Adrian United Church of Christ in Adrian, Michigan. The church has been denied insurance coverage from the Brotherhood Mutual Insurance because the church’s national governing body will ordain queer folks, and the church approves of and performs gay marriages.
In a letter to the church, the insurance company is quoted as saying “Controversial stances such as those indicated in your application responses have resulted in property damage and the potential for increased litigation.” So far, this is the sole reason for refusing to provide insurance coverage for the church.
It is important to note that there has been no reported violence aimed at the church, and the refusal to provide coverage is based solely on the progressive and inclusive policies on queer issues.
