Huckabee Pressed on ‘Meet the Press’

* Huckabee on ‘Meet the Press’

I can’t imagine that there are many among us in the queer community naive enough to think that Mike Huckabee was actually a presidential candidate who has our best interests in mind. If there were any doubts, his appearance on “Meet the Press” certainly clears up any misconceptions that may have existed about his intentions.

Tim Russert came down fairly strong on Huckabee questioning him about his absurd arguments made in a 1998 book “Kids Who Kill” in which he compared homosexuality with pedophilia and necrophilia. “It is now difficult to keep track of the vast array of publicly endorsed and institutionally supported aberrations–from homosexuality and pedophilia to sadomasochism and necrophilia.” When pressed on the issue he did some fancy political footwork discussing how “all of these are deviations from what has been the traditional concept of sexual behavior.” Afterwards, he tried to deny that he believed homosexuality was the same as pedophilia despite his own statements made just a few years ago.

Later in the interview, when pressed about whether or not people were “born gay” he proceeded to waffle a bit and stated that regardless of tendencies (which he wasn’t sure if people were born with), they have an ability to control the behavior they choose to engage in.

Overall, it’s clear where Huckabee comes down in terms of protecting the needs of our community. I for one am thrilled to see mainstream press grilling candidates on issues important to our community as the 2008 presidential election draws ever closer.
