Don’t miss two great opportunities to shop ethically this month: the
Gerber/Hart’s holiday book sale, already going strong and continuing
through the Sunday the 16th, and Facets’ annual clearance sale,
which picks back up on the 15th and 16th.

The Gerber/Hart Library, the largest circulating LGBT library in the
Midwest, is an invaluable part of the Chicago queer community. They
hold regular sales of donated books as fund raisers; you’ll have a
diverse spread of gay, non-gay, and completely unrelated titles to
choose from. In addition to maintaining their impressive circulating
collection and archives, the Library offers programming such as film
screening, book discussion groups and ongoing exhibitions on
subjects of interest to the community.

Facets Multimedia screens, rents and sells a very wide selection of
films. Their sale began last weekend; I was bowled over by the
variety of DVDs and videotapes on offer, obscure to mainstream, for
dirt-cheap prices. For the reasonable sum of about $6 I picked up
“Waiting for the Moon,” a drama about the relationship between
Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas and “Linda/Les, & Annie,” a
documentary short which Gay.com calls “the first female-to-male
transsexual love affair in herstory,” as well as a documentary about
rural Virginia that I think my grandmother will just love. Get there
early and grab the 7-film John Waters DVD boxset.
