Magnetic Fields ‘Distortion’ Gaining Clarity

Hm. Okay. The first song and the album cover are not overwhelming me with holy shitness. BUT having created probably the best concept album ever and a body of work that will be cherished for generations to come, I’m still excited about the new Magnetic Fields album, Distortion, out 1/15/08 on Nonesuch. Preliminary interviews have Stephin Merritt saying they used piano feedback on every song. They are calling their live shows this spring “residencies” and not a proper tour. Six shows in Chicago at the Old Town School is generous, and by the time the shows were announced in our free weekly, there were barely any tickets left. Tracklist and tourdates below, as well as the new song “Three-way” and a live cover of “Born On a Train” by the Arcade Fire.

Behind Every Good Girl Band, There’s a Hot Homothug

Palms Out Sounds, always one of the best places to find the hottest floor-creaming tracks, is getting ready to break out in a major way. 2008 is literally the future as a record label, an expanded contributors list and cutting edge look and feel will give Palms Out first dibs on answering many questions about what the hell is happening to the music industry. With their first 12″ by Danish lesbian duo Fagget Fairys available for pre-order, we have the paradox of an Mp3 blog selling hard copies of music. I’m SO there.

This week, Palms Out clued me into the cock friendly mind of DJ, Producer, homothug and now svengali Kingdom–an attractive Brooklynite making his first splish-splashes in the music mogul hot tub. A slammin’ mixtape on the myspace, regular gigging and now a girl group Michelle–a Crime Mob-ish crew of divas ready to give hipster rap circles a new spin. Mp3′s and a link to his mixtape below, and while I couldn’t find the tracklist, R&B, house, thugrave, and old school hip hop are present in a fine 55 minute balance perfect for parties with tallboys and booties.

Kingdom–Buckn’ Ft. Sr. Palm (Radio Edit)

Keyshia Cole–Let it Go (Kingdom’s 909 Remix)

Republican’ts

* Can we ask Anderson??

November 30th marks the 14th anniversary of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy’s inception. The policy, signed by former President Clinton was initially embraced by lawmakers as a way to allow gay and lesbians to serve in the military, while forcing them to stay closeted in order to appease conservatives. Since 1993, over 12,000 men and women have been discharged from the armed services because of their sexual orientation. Most servicemen and women discharged under this policy have been forced out due to simply mentioning their sexual orientation, and not because of any type of misconduct.

In a time of war, it seems a bit counterproductive to dismiss anyone who wants to serve from our armed services. Further, DADT has cost the government between 100 and 300 million dollars, depending on which study you read. In symbolic protest of the military’s policies towards openly gay servicemen and women, the HRC and other organizations plan to place 12,000 flags on the National Mall from November 30th through December 2nd in celebration of the contributions made by the people discriminated under the current policy.

Wednesday night I tuned into the Republican CNN/YouTube debate hoping that this topic might come up. I watched certain candidates uncomfortably confirm their support of the policy in the face of an openly gay retired general. Check out the video below to see General Kerr’s candid question, and the seemingly awkward responses from the candidates (especially Mitt Romney).

Todd Haynes: His Way

November 29, 2007

I’M NOT THERE [2007]
Directed by Todd Haynes
Written by Todd Haynes and Oren Moverman
With Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, Ben Wishaw

I’m Not There is the third Todd Haynes film to free associate on and/or fantasize about the lives of real musicians. His film Velvet Goldmine [1998] featured Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Ewan McGregor as bisexual glam rockers loosely based on David Bowie and Iggy Pop. His 1987 unauthorized cult biography of Miss Rainy Days ‘n’ Mondays herself, Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, starred Barbie dolls. The latest film from Mr. Haynes ruminates on the life of Bob Dylan, a life-long chameleon that is fittingly portrayed by six different actors, four grown white men, a young black boy, and Cate Blanchett.

Queer sensibility permeates the films of the openly gay director, from his Sundance darling, the triptych Poison [1991], to his Oscar nominated tribute to Douglas Sirk, Far From Heaven [2002]. Mr. Haynes is subtle with I’m Not There; there is nary a mary in the film although Ms. Blanchett’s character is sexually ambiguous. The film is, however, undeniably queer. The six Dylans represent a deconstruction of the real thing, and the fragmented narratives and stunning images create a mosaic of the man and the worlds he inhabited. Most of the songs in the film are recordings by Dylan himself, with artists like Eddie Vedder, Yo La Tengo, and Calexico lending their talents here and there. Be sure to stay through the final credits to hear a beautiful cover of “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” by Antony and the Johnsons.

Far from your standard Hollywood biopic, I’m Not There delights the ears and eyes even if, like me, you are not a die-hard fan of Bob Dylan. The film opened in wide release on November 21.

Ask Dr. Lou

November 28, 2007

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Dear Dr. Lou: Do you hate Christian?

I like this question because I definitely had a gut-level dislike of Christian that I wanted to analyze. Thinking about it, the thing that fuels my annoyance of Christian is his arrogance, actually something that goes beyond arrogance that I don’t have a word for.

“Confidence” is liking and being proud of your work. Nothing wrong with that.

“Arrogance” is liking your work so much that you cannot accept any feedback by others even those who have more experience or a different perspective than you. Kind of a bad trait, but likely not all that uncommon amongst creative people, especially those selected for reality TV.

“Beyond Arrogance” is thinking you are the only person in the room with talent and anything to say creatively (Hello, Jeffrey Sebelia). That’s a bad place for anyone to be.

This kid is in for trouble if he thinks at 21 years old that he has nothing to learn from anyone else.

But, what about his hair?

I have no complaints about the hair. I’d like to think that if I was a young, tiny, twinky, wanna-be punk designer, I’d have crazy hair too.

If I was doing the kid’s report card:
Designs- Superior
Hair- Outstanding
Attitude- Needs Improvement

More gay fun with fashion at Project Rungay. Finally, did you know there was a Project Runway Canada?? With fucking Iman as the host? And her axe-line is “You just don’t measure up” ??!!

Stick Your Finger In This: Dyke March Chicago is Moving?

November 27, 2007

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I found this from the organizers of Chicago’s Dyke March on Myspace:

CHICAGO DYKE MARCH IS MOVING… LET’S TALK ABOUT IT!! Join Chicago Dyke
March organizers for a discussion on the future of Dyke March! The
purpose of this forum is to engage community members in a discussion
about the change of location for the March in 2008. Please come and
share any concerns or ideas you have about potential locations for
next year. **DYKE MARCH COMMUNITY FORUM** WHEN: FRIDAY, NOV. 30 WHERE: WOMEN & CHILDREN FIRST (5233 N. CLARK) TIME: 7-8:30PM

I think there are a lot of changes that could benefit Dyke March, starting
with the default picture used on the myspace page, but location is not
one of them. Andersonville was once “Girlstown” and is rapidly losing
that reputation to the chain restaurants and yuppies. Please come and
talk about how we can make Dyke March bigger and more inclusive while
maintaining it’s traditional significance as Chicago’s non-corporate,
grass-roots, political event that celebrates the diversity of our
queer communities.

This Just In: Government’s Trifling

November 26, 2007

Even in death, Jerry Falwell (the outer of poor Tinky Winky) is making news. The community thought we were rid of him when the 73-year-old bigot died in May, but alas we were wrong.

This week breaking news surfaced about FBI reports citing death threats against reverend Falwell in the 1980’s. The confidential documents were obtained by the Washington Post under the Freedom of Information Act and included information about alleged assassination threats against Falwell.

According to the documents the 1983 assassination was going to be committed by “gays in Cincinnati,” how’s that for specific?! In response to these alleged threats on his life, FBI agents infiltrated the Cincinnati gay community through the use of a confidential informant the organization believed had specific knowledge of the gay and lesbian community in the Midwest. In an amusing debrief with FBI agents, the informant is quoted as saying “Source furnished a current copy of the Yellow Page, June, 1983, which is Cincinnati’s gay newspaper. Circulation in the Cincinnati area is shown to be 2000 copies which is not believed exaggerated. Source stated that the Downtown vicinity of Cincinnati supports eight gay bars and one lesbian bar. Source restated the general dislike for Jerry Falwell within the Cincinnati area.”

Excerpts from the actual files can be read here. A retrospective of Falwell’s hateful bile can be read here.

Rhythm King And Her Friends

November 25, 2007

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Rhythm King And Her Friends released their second record in September via Kitty Yo. Still waiting for some kind of U.S. distribution, their music has been worth it to me even though overseas shipping ain’t cheap. Front of Luxury is more slick minimal beats, strong synths and enough guitar to make this duo more than just another dance band. Their charming accent, songs in French and tasteful use of , uh, rhythm is shaking lesbians out of their trees in Europe (the band is based in Berlin and Paris) but I’m still waiting for a U.S. tour. Write them and tell them how much you love them, maybe they’ll come over here already. Mp3′s and new video below. If you are not a stickler for vinyl, you can buy their music in high quality mp3 form at BoomKat.

Deerhunter The Movie Way Longer Than Deerhunter the Band’s Career

November 24, 2007

* Bradford Cox

Just announced via the band’s blog, Deerhunter will be on hiatus after their current tour. Pitchfork has been suckling on their teet since Cryptograms, a pop record awash in calm, arty waters. Singer Bradford Cox’s solo project Atlas Sound will have full-time status now, and his off the cuff recording will be polished with the release of the full length Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel (Kranky Records) on February 19th. Judging from the site, Cox has made a habit of posting Atlas Sound songs right after he recorded them on tour, on the bus, at the venue, sometimes reposting them later with corrections. It’s interesting to note that the singer has been a little squirrely about his sexual orientation in interviews, but on stage with the band, he’ll rant about it and lip sync like a drag diva all the while donning a sleeveless, sparkley dress. Hopefully his lonesome foray into the biz will get whatever’s deep in there out and on the vinyl plate. So far Atlas Sound is a hazy, lazy river of soft, layered strumming and reverb. Pretty stuff. Mp3′s below…
